I have the exact same problem after having the phone one week. No dust or anything under the cover it was new from the box, and after using the camera seven times it has developed scratches over the lens and you can tell as this shows on pictures when the flash is used.
Would not recommend the N97 to anone until nokia recal and deal with this problem. Infact under current UK Trading Standards Law I would go as far as saying this phone is not Fit For Purpose!!

Hey, sorry to hear that your N97's lens cover has done more harm than protection. Hopefully your replacement will be a different batch that won't do that.

Great idea btw - I would love for an indication, perhaps just even an icon, placed along with "new messages/bluetooth/missed calls" area to tell me if the lens cover is open.

That could be easily implemented in a firmware upgrade.

I have the very same problem. In fact it got scratched by the lens in the first few days of my having it. There's a long vertical scratch just to the right of the lens, but which causes horrible distortions when the flash is activated...

...I phoned Vodafone about this and they've agreed to replace it, but that's mostly because it's still covered under it's 30 day guarantee.

Another thing I'd like to see in Nokia is an indication on the front screen that the lens cover is currently open, it's so easy to forget you've opened it!
