[...] Well, there is no doubt that holding Nokia doesn’t feel that precious now as it used to be… even keeping in mind all the subjective feelings and Steve Jobs’ marketing prowess or Google’s technical empire… So, the million dollar question is what the hell is Nokia doing? While it’s common that you can’t be king forever (look at the current Australian cricket team for example), certainly a 41 bn Euro company can’t sink so soon (that reminds me of Titanic… but i am sure Nokia people has seen the movie and learnt a lot). there is an interesting read here – Where do we go from here, Nokia?
Great article Andy agree with every point there.
1. As much as I like Android I do not want to see Nokia adopting it, I do not want to live in another world where there are only two OS's just look at the PC v MAC debacle all the innovation happened right at the end all manufacturers can promise you is more RAM faster CPU and thats it and Android is sorta moving that way with all the 4.3 inch devices
2. People seem to confuse the matter concerning Nokia making money since the majority of their revenue comes from feature phones. The fact is Nokia do make money on those devices compared to LG and Samsung which make incredibly thin margins its all due to the massive foothold Nokia have in manufacturing, Nokia are able to produce phones much cheaper than competitors.
3. Meego is very promising all the major tech blogs have commented and seem so far excited or rather intrigued by its potential
4. As for Nokia leapfrogging the competition thats a hard task to do, but then again it seem like the media think Apple are the only company in the world that can innovate the fact is without Nokia and Motorola we wouldn't be here in terms of Mobile phones, people seem to forget how much Nokia has done in terms of mobile phone innovation I bet you there are a large chunk of Nokia tech in those iPhones and Androids that are being sold today.

An important correction. You say several times that Nokia is making lots of money. That is not true and a big part of the problem. Nokia is like General Motors was in the United States. Lots of market share, constantly talking about how they were the "biggest" auto maker, but not making much money. Look at the profits of Apple and Google, no wonder Nokia's value as a company is so low compared to them.

Nokia as a company needs to start making profits on its products or it is going to continue to fail.

Agree. I am confident in Nokia's ability to carve back their rightful position as number one, in mind as well as market share. It's just a matter of time.

They really need MeeGo phone to be the superphone that blows away expectations. Anything less than extraordinary will not do. No compromises, no economy driven decisions (for high end). Then market it like you were Steve Jobs.

<blockquote>
"I am committed, perhaps even obsessed, with getting Nokia back to being number one in high-end devices. Achieving this will require performance and efforts over and above the norm. This is a role I’ve personally been preparing for over the last 20 years. We have all the assets — including R&D and product development – at our disposal under one roof – to produce killer smartphones and market-changing mobile computers." Anssi Vanjoki

Anssi mentions a Nseries S^4 handset is coming too. Hmmm...I hope we don't end up with too many new handsets resulting in diluted efforts that could have been aimed at a narrower range of brilliant products.

Nokia needs someone in charge who is not totally faceless imo. Someone who appears in the media with their new products in hand and pointing out the good things in Nokias.

To make sure N8 is not slaughtered in reviews as "an OK product but one that is DOA due to Symbian^3 being dumped within half a year" Nokia also needs(!) to say publicly they will support N8 in 2011 and _will_ upgrade them to S^4.

My 2.5 cents.
