What are you expecting from Nokia's MeeGo phone in order for it to become successful?

| July 25, 2010 | Comments (39)

A lot of hopes are resting on MeeGo phone to be instrumental in Nokia’s reclamation of the high end smartphone arena.

There’s the N8, and other rumoured Symbian^3 devices which are awesome in their own right. But some would argue that they are high-mid and not completely and convincingly all high end.

It seems for the best of the very best Nokia will have to offer, the responsibility lies of MeeGo Phone.

What are you expecting from the Nokia MeeGo Phone in order for it to become successful?

I could mention precise hardware specifications/expectations from the OS, but I’ll leave that for the comments. Is there anything in particular that MeeGo phone cannot do without?

I’ll blanket statement with,

“MeeGo phone must be exceptional. Anything other than being an over achiever is a ‘fail’. There isn’t any room for compromises any more now that all eyes are on Nokia to deliver a class leading flagship. One that deserves the flagship name in not just being the best out of your own portfolio but sets the bar for your competition. There can’t be any penny pinching, no leaving out of features to place into a future handset. It must at the very least, be as good as the best currently out there and then some. Don’t just be a jack of all trades master of none, but similarly, you can’t do with only having one strong facet. MeeGo phone should be Nokia’s opportunity to show the rest of the world exactly everything their capable of, strengthen their brand image and justify their position as the number one phone manufacturer in the world”

If MeeGo phone doesn’t deliver to expectations, it’s unfortunately too late for any changes to happen, what with Nokia World 2010 just over a month to go.

Even if Nokia’s MeeGo phone turns out to be amazing, some may still find other excuses as to why it would suck, such as the ecosystem. That in itself would be another post. (As is the possibility of Nokia’s own MeeGo phone being outclassed by another manufacturer)

    1. No lag
    2. Awesome UI
    3. Same awesomeness and potential as Symbian

That’s coz I want Nokia to shut up all the Nokia haters by making MeeGo UI awesome and lag free and just as useful as symbian.

  2. yougo says:

    1. It should be candybar form factor with no phisical buttons on front
    2. lag-free,(a lot of tech blog, haters bad mouth nokia because of underspeced symbian phone, n96 n97, x6, c6, e72), 3d gpu a must
    3. imporved maemo5 ui, somthing like the maemo6 or meego tablet ui
    4. meego inclusive icons and theme
    5. xenon flash, hdmi, usb-ontg
    6. no leak to public before the announcement
    7. excellent maetrial used, highest quality glass screen and aluminium or stainless steel
8.same camera sensor as n8 and wide angle len. never mind the 5mp
    9.euro 450

  3. GavW says:

Agree with those above, but would also add a strong app community.

No, we don’t need 100 different “Fart Apps”, and most apps could be replaced be replaced by a good mobile/light website, but for the popular press this is percived as important. For MeGoo and nokia to thrive the populat (and highly vocal) press need to be able to recommend the phones to an audience beyond the geek market.

  4. yougo says:

    free ovi maps nav

buil-in decent games like angry birds, super nintendo emulator,

  5. Cod3rror says:

    Monoblock design, no hardware QWERTY.

The same as yougo, I wish that MeeGo is designed in such a way that there are no physical buttons on the front at all.

    The phone must be powerful.

    As for the Meego(software)

First and foremost, NO LAG, it must run butter smooth, with perfect kinetic scrolling, bounce and other effects, no over the top effects either, things sliding in from the right is perfect for transitioning.

Global multitouch support – Maps, Images, Browser, Email, etc…

The virtual keyboard MUST be great, swype would be a great extra

    USB-OTG
Calendar that shows a person’s age when you enter their birthday reminder, and auto imports birthdays from contacts info.

    SIP integration like in Symbian

Global parsing of links and phone numbers, in Notes app, when you tab on a phone number it should offer you to add it to contacts, call, msg. When you tap on a link it should open it in a browser.

Phone wide search is a must – Apple’s spotlight, Google’s Search bar, Skequikey on S60

Clean gallery application with “places” feature like on the iOS4

Text Manupulation – Text Selection, Cut/Copy/Paste like the iPhone

    DivX/XviD/MKV Support

    Video Editor

    Ovi Maps

Nice MP3 Player with coverflow and all that

Built in timer – Countdown(Timer), Stopwatch. Should be built right into the clock app.

Alarm with – Snooze time(Pause time between snoozes), Define workdays, Custom alarm sound, Alarm occurrence(Once, daily, work days), Alarm volume control

Camera Picture/Video Tagging, face detection, autofocus, tap to focus.

    A good webbrowser.

    A good File System Browser

    Mass Storage support

Bluetooth – File Transfer, etc… full support.

    • Cod3rror says:

Also forgot to add that it must be made for touch, for example Symbian^3 is not fully “Direct manipulation UI” the scroll bar is still visible at all times, some of the levers are obvious not for touching with a finger… small things like that add up to annoyance over time.

The scroll bar should be only visible when you scroll to indicate position, then it should disappear.

When you scroll, nothing should get highlighted as if you’re selecting it under your finger… what I mean is: when you scroll in S^3(Android has the same problem) wherever you place your finger to swipe gets selected(highlighted) before you scroll.
Go to 0:32 in the video below to understand what I mean.

Did you see “Facebook” get selected/highlighted as he scrolled? that should not happen, when you scroll, it should feel like you have no contact with application icons at all, as if they are underneath the glass/invisible scrolling wheel

  6. Chris says:

The browser experience must be superb and the device in general must leave you with that feeling that you can skip using your PC for the simpler tasks and just do it on the MeeGo device.

It should be built from good materials and it should conform to slim and sturdy physical appearance standards. Approach the form factor of the MILESTONE in regard of slimness combined with physical QWERTY. Fuill portrait and landscape support since day one, with better support for landscape (since you have a physical qwerty, Android should work better than it does now in landscape).

Slap in a decent battery, at the very least the one from the N97. Preferably develop a new one with more power.

It must have great multimedia functions: media players must look good and be functional, also the camera must wow you and you must be able to take the most out of what you do -> integrate uploading to FB, YouTube etc. into menus from Day#1.

Integrate to IM accounts. MSN must be built-in and easy to set up from Day#1. Continue to narrow the difference between IM conversations and SMS conversations in the way the UI handles them. Skype Skype Skype with videocalls since Day#1.

Apps, apps, apps must come to the device and they must look good. They must range from silly to funny to business to system administrative tools. This however requires that also the Ovi Store is revamped (!).

Frequent updates to software and/or general feeling that MeeGo is an ongoing product where you’re not left behdin before the next update. If there’s a MeeGo update your device won’t get, the only answer ppl will hear is that it requires better hardware (example: Android beginning to require 1Ghz). This is a real reason why to upgrade once a year.

BOAST about all these features. SCREAM at everyone how unique it is and then back it up with having all the functionality with a slick UI. Point out, that you give everything in one package with a nice UI, instead of demanding you to dish out a wad of dough every year just to get features already present in other devices. The MeeGo “iDon’t” type videos should be made by Nokia’s PR section, not by fans on YouTube. Apple’s called you out now call them out.

  7. Escape says:

1)It should be on the edge of technologies (cortex arm9 or moorestown, 1gb ram, etc.)
2)Big size screen (no matter amoled or not – it might be sharp’s or something like that)with high resolution
3)perfect build quality and perfect material
4)good audio chip, i want to enjoy music, not to suffer
5)at least minimum amount of apps (navigation, video player, dictionary, 3-4 3d games)from the start
    6)bugs-free – at all!
    7)perfect camera
8)user friendly ui – the beauty is not so important – it should be easy to use and have all important functions
    9)long term support
10)positioning – like apple or even better, people want to have not the “another samsung in line”, “another nokia with number”, but the recognizable by everyone device

  8. Nilux says:

    1. Two models, with and without physical qwerty with 5 rows
    2. Long term support (thats normal for nokia)
    3. 4″ amoled capacitive
    4. 1G Ram (enough even after 2 years) and at least 1GHz cpu
    5. All the best hardware: BT, IR, WIFI N, 12MP, WVGA, RFID, Xenon… No matter if they use battery because the user can disable the hungry features
    6. Smooth UI, scrolling, flip, zoom. Rather no fancy effects if not smooth enough.
    7. It’s worth 1000€ if its only apple quality but open source
    8. Let it be the flagship for at least 1 year!!!

  9. Tazzpa says:

Really waiting to see Intel Atom processor on Nokia phones. And what comes along with it are all apps that run on desktop Linux.

  10. Yougo says:

    Release n8 before nokia world

release meego phone just tfive before xmas

  11. webby says:

After using Swype for a couple of weeks, it would be very hard for me to live without it now…

  12. bob says:

it better look as sweet as that render image you have

excellent hardware(top of the line components, wifi n, pentaband 3.5g amoled display)etc…

    excellent build quiality

large screen 4.0 seems to be a sweet spot with a high resolution

    smooth, eye catching UI

and based on their previous maemo work, it had better fully computer like in its functionality

goahead, steal the best of android/webos/ios and make it better!

  13. John Wiegand-forson says:

It has to be like a concept car that. The ones car makers show off to the world to prove what they can make, the N900 is very similar in terms of software it was slightly different to the competition and quirky with the best web browser on any mobile device. In a way I want it like the device in the picture up there but it wont be :-( It is really hard to be honest because having a 1 GHZ processor and a lag free UI isn’t enough anymore Apple and Google have had that for a couple of months now. The statement you put up there in the post suggests to me that it has to be like a concept car to be even picked up by the media there is so much hype around Apple and Google right know that having a lag free UI and no bugs, and a decent looking UI is not good enough for Nokia I am afraid. Look at Microsoft and their new Metro UI for Windows Phone 7 it is AMAZING so tempted to buy one, but you know the usual skeptics are claiming will Microsoft do this, will they do that bladybladyblah and are already dismissing it even though it is arguably more innovative than the iPhone or Android, even though the UI is a great way to use a smartphone without focusing on the app malarky which is getting boring now. I don’t want to dampen the spirits or anything but it will be tall order even if Nokia do manage the things people are mentioning that they want in the Meego device will they still be able tempt people that have jumped ship to Android or and iPhone to come back ?? I highly doubt it We will have to wait and see.

  14. John Wiegand-forson says:

To reiterate on the above comment it has to be anything like the render above to be recognised as being as good as iOS, Android, WebOS (if HP don’t screw it up) and Windows Phone 7. In terms of the media (especially american media) I am sure Nokia’s eventual Meego device will be very good but I have a feeling the media will not share that same enthusiasm or opinion as long as King Steve is there :-) .

  15. Inacurate says:

Some really great suggestions I have read above!

    My own:

    1) Go deep with user configurable options, default actions for when there are multiple options, TOGGLE options when there are only two, don’t open another screen to select (Like on N900 in places)

    2) QWERTY model w/8MP&Xenon & One VKB only(using N8 style, with pop up letters when tapped, USER CONFIGUARABLE KEYS) w/12MP&Xenon. We know having a QWERTY is going to mean a sacrifice somewhere, try it here. Or do something else novel and experimental if that is what it takes to get QWERTY and 8MP+ w/Xenon and the same sensor as from the N8.

    3) Lag free, seamless UI that integrates with everything properly. Click on an e-mail, it opens default e-mail client. Click on a number, it gives you option to call/SMS, etc OR (my preference) USER can define what happens by default. Build on what the N900 has basically.

    4) Painless Exchange, Gmail, etc support. Sure, have Nokia Messaging on device, but also really flesh out support for Exchange servers for business use. Gmail has labels, etc? Add support for them in NM, etc. Do not assume the community is going to make all the applications, show THEM how it is done and do it well.

    5) Make the OS upgradeable in a similar, but not exact copy, fashion as Apple’s. Actually support the OS, improve it. Listen to customer feedback – this goes back to USER configurable options too. Customers wanting two things? Give them the option of choosing how THEY want it. Snooze time limits, why does it HAVE to be 5/10/15? Why can’t it be X/Y/Z based on user input?

    6) Superb file management, sharing and accessibility options/software. It’s 2010, BUILD on what was done with Maemo 5 on the N900, especially in the Music Player. Add ability to SHARE file’s on network/service, print direct from device – All over Wifi.

    7) If Nokia could get it to last more than a day on one charge, that would be a huge deal to a lot of people. Without sacrificing point number 3.
    8) 1GB of RAM is not impossible these days. Nor is a 1Ghz CPU.

    9) I hate applications, but as others have said…media and potential buyers “want” to spend money on apps. So, revamp the Ovi Store, make it USEFUL and get some return while reducing the price point for the unit for purchase.

    10) Options, options, options. Why can’t I change this option, or why must I be forced to choose from a set amount of minutes? Hide an “Advanced” button somewhere in Settings and allow power users to change default settings to their own defaults. Have it nice and easy and “intuitive” for those who don’t want to go deep, but allow for the possibility for those who do, without having to know how to code or write programs!

  16. Hany says:

    1) killer atractive hardware but with 3.5-4 inch screen
    2) Awesome UI that’s very appealing and with much eyecandy

  19. yougo says:

    1800mah battery

  20. Will says:

And I forgat the battery have to be good as 1800 MHz and I have to say that the handset above just looks great I would love somthing likable that From nokia it has an awesome looks

  21. Aaron says:

    1. The Maemo interface style ported over to MeeGo. I’ve never seen anything so beautiful in my entire life.

    2. Candy bar phone, relatively small, not a huge friggin brick like the N900.

    3. All touchscreen.

    4. GPU

  22. Raj says:

I got nothing to say. because every1 said what i was gonna say.
Just if they design N9 the way phone looks in picture. I would run this buy that phone right at this moment lol

  23. Jeff says:

Cost is a factor and I doubt that they can realized it.

  24. IMarius says:

    candy bar ?

i want different forum factors which is what nokia can deliver. have one candy bar sure, but one with a keyboard, cause i want a keyboard for doing real work on the phone.

  25. sid says:

Everything must be well integrated, the calendar should talk to the address book which should talk to maps etc…. I think webOS and Android do this very well.
