Video: 6 minutes with the latest MeeGo Handset UX build (a look at the widgets gallery)
I don’t know what progress I’ve missed on the MeeGo handset UX front whilst I’ve been away but the last few videos I saw were only the extremely early, limited functionality ones.
Here the menu items have changed, and the third row is hidden away beneath the launcher bar (instead of being a side swipe thing…hmm)
Icons themselves seem to have also changed; they’re not all square. e.g. the people icon.
You’ll also see the widget gallery. The menu interface is pretty much Maemo/N900 like which I’m a fan. What’s interesting is there seems to be quite a content of widgets already.
There’s also a brief look at the People app (contacts).

I think I’m gonna wait for N9 to come out and then decide whether to buy an N8 or an N9
Do you know what? I see no advantages of MeeGo on an N9. I’d rather have Symbian 3/4 on an N8 any day.
Can someone tell me what the real advantages would be of the former over the latter?
New UI, Mobile Computing, easier navigation through UI, latest standard OS (for those complaining about symbian being outdated), better functionality, Qt support, powerful graphics and processing power, better apps, compatible with multiple devices and therefore providing connectivity to all MeeGo devices…………in short, better at everything that Symbian does and probably more (coz we don’t know what MeeGo phone can do). If you have ever used an N900, you’d know the potential it had, it was more powerful than any other symbian device on market. Same will be with MeeGo, but it will have better functionality and hardware. Basically, a MeeGo phone will be a mini netbook that can make calls
I would still like to see Symbian 3/4 tried on a phone with the specs of the N900 to see if it makes any differences with lack and that sort of stuff, you stuff bloggers moan about on Nokia phones
Tell that the American blogs the differences between Symbian and Android and iOS is the UI and apps but nothing else. We still dont know if Meego will solve that although Meego does seem different to the android and iOS even Maemo 5 is, we will have to wait and see
IMO, MeeGo will definitely make a difference. Because its not just targeted for smartphones, it will also be used on other devices like car infotainment, Netbooks and other stuff. This is definitely gonna attract consumers and therefore will also attract developers.
And dude, I’m not a blogger! LOL
Dont get me wrong, I do like Symbian and S^3 looks VERY impressive to me. and S^4 will be even better. and its gonna rule the low and mid end market. Meego will dominate the high end though
well based on this video you’ll probably don’t see any advantages.
The real advantage is that is based on desktop linux so many apps will only be ported.

I know it’s still early days but there will have to be a lot of work on boot time and general responsiveness if this is expected to become usable. A HTML interface and widgets inside a webkit browser would be more responsive than these examples.
Hmmm…I know it will be better than Maemo 5. And since Maemo was amazing, any improvements therefore will be a win.
I was watching the boot time for a netbook on youtube, it came out to 31 seconds if I am not mistaken. I would say a phone would match that time.
boot time is not that important, because people don’t turn off their phone very often , but a responsive OS is a must.
anyway from the next week it will enter in beta stage, that means feature freeze and they’ll start bug fixing
actually a html interface will be the last thing that we want from meego.
Harmattan on N9 should not be mixed up with MeeGo that we’ve seen on N900, although the menu soft button in the latest code drop seems similar to the one seen in N9 pictures

why qwerty keyboard which is outdated
why cant rhe screen size be larger?
N900 is better than meego phoone
n8 is better than this phone
there will probably be a non-keyboard device . you can please everyone. some people like only touch , some touch+qwerty , others like big screens, others small screens.
the design is the last thing that will be implemented.
Design is subjective to the person looking at the device and his/her own likings. I personally LOVE this design. About the qwerty, this is just the first MeeGo phone, there’s more yet to come. There will be phones with and without qwerty.
Screen on this thing is already quite large. 4″ is pretty large IMO, there might even be a 4.3″ in future. I don’t think a 5″ phone would be good though, that’s way too big (yeah I know, that’s what she said! lol)
I don’t think you can judge a phone that hasn’t even been released yet. We don’t know what MeeGo will be capable of, but we do know that MeeGo will be better than N900′s Maemo as maemo was Step 4 of 5 and MeeGo is the final, step 5 of 5.
Again, N8 hasn’t been released, N9′hasnt even been announced, it would be an injustice to both phones if we judge them right now. N8 will do GREAT as a mid range phone but for power users, MeeGo phones will ROCK
Depends what you use the phone/device for.
For entering text?
I want a nice physical keyboard instead of using half the screen for showing a virtual keyboard partly covered by my fingers. There is a difference between technical progress and fashion.
Perhaps best to give the customer a choice (two models or more).
I bought my N900 when I knew N8 was without keyboard (and linux).
