A few pointers:

1. Red-eye flash mode provides a little more flash power (+10 to 20%)
2. Red-eye reduction mode features both a longer interval between pre-flash and main flash allowing more time for the eye to 'react' to the pre-flash. The pupils will be at their smallest opening with this slightly longer interval. But the subject needs to be looking towards the camera for it to react to this pre-burst. Red-eye reduction also includes an automatic red-eye removal algorithm which is not active in the regular auto flash mode.
3. Red-eye is a function of the angle of the flash light reflecting off the retina (red blood vessels) to the lens. Closer distances increase this angle therefore reducing the possibility of red-eye. Unfortunately we don't have the luxury of moving the flash further from the lens.
4. The user programmable scene mode is new to the N8 allowing you to define which features/settings are enabled each time the camera starts. This includes the ability to set the red-eye reduction flash mode.

TBH I think it shouldn't remember settings, its behaviour is correct.

My X10 remembers settings, and it's annoying. Cos when I want to take a quick snapshop, it's more often than not in some crazy focus/metering mode that doesn't work well, like left in macro or something. At least with auto you'll get a decent pic for a snapshot, or you can take your time and reset it to get it right.

And as above, you can change the default behaviour with the manual profile.

That's a good tip but my manual profile is set to black and white high contrast.

Really though the camera should remember your last used settings. Just like the Nokia N900. It shouldn't be too difficult to put this in. Though there are ways to work around it too. Perhaps Nokia was just thinking about the very joe average user who would always just want the phone in Auto.

If you always want red eyes reduction you just have to set the manual profile as your default profile and choose red eyes reduction in this profile :)

Great pics Jay! Really great to see N8 lasting through such a pressure at a party that looks like a lotta fun!

I dont really like the Red-eye, i wish N8 could remember the settings. However, its PERFECT for the picture of that guy who dressed up as vampire! Looks great :)

Thanks Mike! I'll check around tonight to see if Red eye mode reduces it significantly.
