Video: ST Ericsson U8500 1.2GHz Dual Core ARM Cortex A9 with MeeGo Phone OS
A couple of days ago MyNokiaBlog.com reader, Marcin, mentioned the ST Ericsson U8500 for MeeGo
“ST-Ericsson U8500 Linaro and MeeGo 11.30 -12.10, November 16th, 2010 MeeGo Convergence Dublin:D”
Above is a video by Charbax fromarmdevices.net/ showing a reference design for U8500 with MeeGo on it (cheers to @Cambo078 for the find), which would apparently be suitable for tablets as well as phone. Products with U8500 expected first half of next year (Max Before July 2011). Would the Nokia N9 be one of them?
Another video below shares more info about the U8500 – this was shot back in February also by Charbax where the reference design devices had only Android and Symbian. U8500 is apparently up to 1.2GHz (Dual Core) with ARM Mali 400 GPU.
Check out the 720p 3D game rendering. Also look at that 1080p playback on Symbian.
It’s worth noting that Nokia MeeGo phones may also use Intel chips in future – but at the moment, ARM is the better choice for the first Nokia MeeGo phone (If I recall correctly).
What does the U8500 feature?
The U8500 is the first mobile platform with full High-Definition 1080 progressive-scan camcorder capabilities. With its combination of a dual-core SMP processor and a high-end 3D graphics accelerator, the U8500 enables a full web-browsing experience for next-generation smartphones.
- Full HD 1080p camcorder, multiple codecs supported
(H264 HP, VC-1, MPEG-4)- High-resolution, touchscreen display support up to XGA (1024*768)
- Simultaneous dual display support
- High performance 3D graphics, support for
OpenVG 1.1 and OpenGL ES 2.0- Dual camera support with Integrated ISP 18 Mpixel and 5 Mpixel
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and GPS enabled platform
- Built-in USB 2.0, HDMI out
- Support for multiple operating systems, Symbian, Android
and Linux-based platforms- Optional support for mobile TV standards
Technology

More ARM stuff
Whilst we’re on the topic of ARM Cortex A9 let’s check out how:
NVidia Tegra2 ARM Cortex A9 shows that a dual core performs up to 50% faster in rendering pages compared with ARM Cortex A9 with one of the cores disabled.
Here’s the Mali 400 GPU in action (but on the Samsung Orion ARM Cortex A9)

Finally from Nufront, their ARM Cortex A9 can run at 2GHz for Laptop and Desktop usage. There’s a fan going on with this one to cool down the chip. They say in the production you won’t need that (I think that’s what they said). This one powers Ubuntu 10.10 and Quake 3.

Is this for real?! I don’t know the specs on N9 but this looks quite competitive to any of the future devices. But I do keep my faith in Nokia for delivering a great product
Also, did anyone hear about the “leaked” samsung phone which hinted at a 1.2 GHz processor with 1080p recording and playback? They say it’s Samsung’s flagship device for next years. But having Android on it kills of for me >:o not that I would’ve liked the cheap plastic build found on most samsung devices…..
next year*
Android 3 is VERY resource hungry. It needs that fast CPU and big ram to run smoothly.
Agreed! That’s one of the MANY things I hate about Android!
Android 2.3 is not released yet and you talk about 3.0? I think it’s too early.
I think U8500 was designed for symbian^4 but now I’m not so sure if it’s gone be used on symbian. I think nokia intend to use TI OMAP4 on the first meego device at least.
Symbian 4 used Snapdragon.
This U8500 pretty new and won\t be used for Nokia’s phone yet.
U8500 was the reference platform for Symbian. Uncertain they’ll use it though because of the limitations of the screen resolution and touchscreen controller support.
A maximum of XGA resolution would mean large-scale rewritting of Symbian apps not developed in Qt with significantly different aspect ratios to boot.
I think it’s more likely that we’ll see high end Symbian devices with 720p displays in the next year or so. MeeGo is likely to maintain the 16:9 aspect ratio too so 720p panels could be seen as soon as MWC 2011
I know. but why did the guy said that nokia will use U8500 in the first half of 2011??
probably he knows something. just saying
Very strange. Not aware of anything using it by H1 OF 2011.
They could use a U8500 variant with an improved touchscreen controller.
It’s been out since 2009 IIRC too.
thanks for the news:)
So Nokia going to use this (1st half of 2011?).. Interesting
If the N9 is single core Cortex A8 I’m going to pass and wait for the U8500 product.
Helpful info. Fortunate me I found your site by chance, and I am stunned why this coincidence did not came about earlier! I bookmarked it.
