Poll: Where do you see Nokia moving in the next couple months

| February 9, 2011 | 111 Replies

Having read the memo supposedly written by Nokia CEO Stephen Elop and the strong language used to describe Nokia’s current efforts (Symbian & Ovi) as well as their foreseeable releases (MeeGo) in addition to numerous hints of adopting other “Ecosystems”, we felt it important to gauge the responses and preferences of our readers who almost unanimously Nokia fans and users of their devices and current “ecosystems”.

    I can’t vote in the poll :S

    • outdated os says:

      same here. :(

      • stephenquin58 says:

can’t vote, but would have voted NO , don’t want WP7 or Android, I want , and am getting, an E7 and would try Meego if it’s not killed off, if Nokia becomes a simple hardware manufacturer in the next couple of years I’ll change make for the first time in 14 years !!

  2. Jay Montano says:

    Poll working now it seems.

  3. stephenquin58 says:

Well it just started working working, so I voted :)

  4. Andre says:

Think I may have accidentally closed it… should be working now.

  5. Marcos a. says:

Nokia must expand their ecosystem, not adopt another one.

WP7 is a big mistake, its ecosystem is even smaller than Nokia´s.

The big problem with Nokia is their internal software dev teams.

    • Shyne, KLA says:

If the memo is true (feels like that) then he is going to kill symbian and MeeGo will only release in 2012 (seems like Elop not interested in MeeGo too)

Nokia fans may go to someplace else..!!

      • gordonH says:

If that’s the CEO’s strategy then maybe Elop should be the one going somewhere else. Symbian is still no.2. It’s great to be in 2nd position. Elop should be watching that racing car movie “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006)”.
In the movie Ricky comes second and imagines he’s on fire. Same with Elop, Symbian comes second and he imagines the platforms on fire.
Hey Elop looks like Ricky Bobby only 15yrs older.

  6. nocare says:

only symbian and meego make nokia unique

    ios makes apple unique

    android makes google unique

  7. Aaron says:

Dear god, this is depressing. If they abandon Meego and Symbian then all their Qt-hawking all this time would have been all for nothing. Would Symbian updates even continue? Would we be getting that new interface and other features? Would developers abandon the Ovi Store like game developers did to the Dreamcast? Friday can’t come soon enough. I want answers, and I’m glad that I postponed buying an N8 for this reason.

  8. gon says:

    I chose new UI on symbian^3 , on Q2 2011 ,

  9. Cod3rror says:

I am NOT buying a WP7 device period. Unless some incredible miracle occurs of epic proportions that makes WP7 good, I will not buy it.

Out of the two, I’d much rather have Android. I’d buy an Android Nokia phone.

They can differentiate too, adopt Android, create your own skins like HTC Sense and Samsung TouchWiz, port your services, offer great devices and on time updates.

I really like Symbian but I can’t decide, I don’t want a mess of S40, Symbian and Android, I want one mid-high end OS, either Symbian or Android.

    • I hate fanboy! says:

Same thing here, so far, WP7 is an eye candy crap. I would rather choose Android anyway.

Due to the fact that I hate fanism, it’s always price and quality that defy which product I would buy. Symbian is not that bad, surely not as good as competiting OS out there, but the biggest reason I would probably not buying Nokia in my next phone is their reliability. I have seen, read and experienced too much Symbian device facing reliability issue such as freeze or unable to startup.

And again, I don’t care what they are having internally, what I want is I get what I pay for, not being a fanboy and buy something that is absolutely not worthy.

  10. MeeGoUser says:

If they drop Symbian or MeeGo, I will buy an HP WebOS devices instead. It’s the closest thing to Maemo/MeeGo.

It will be a major fail for them.

It will mean the end on Nokia as far as I’m concerned.

  11. Jim says:

I think dropping one platform symbian or meego will be ok. Developing 2 OSs is resource and time hungry and they need to focus on 1 platform.
I hope they will focus more on meego, but something tells me that they will ditch meego. I have a feeling about this.
I also think they will start creating phones with other OS: android or wp7. Similar to what samsung is doing with bada.
If they ditch meego I won’t buy another nokia phone for a long time.

    • Johnny Tremaine says:

I don’t think they’ll ditch Meego, but more likely, they’ll release another half-hearted effort, like the N800-series or N900, and if their intentions are for another OS, likely not offer much support for it.

Meego’s only, ONLY hope is if takes off instantly with huge sales. I’m talking, people-waiting-around-the-block-overnight-in-sleeping-bags-for-the-new-iPhone type of sales success.

If that happens, there will be more. If it only sells to a few nerds, it’s an end of life OS.

      • Jim says:

Well a lot of people are waiting for a meego device. My problem is that meego is not ready an nokia knows that. While waiting for meego to be finished to an end user product they could go and release an android or wp7 devices to make some $$$, until their own os solution is ready

    • outdated os says:

      but they have Qt.

Somebody must stand up against this Ios-Android duopoly.

  12. waloody88 says:

i guess they couldnt fix qt bugs, thats way they can’t improve symbian os nor prepare apps developers 2 write only in qt.

we did nokia cancel maemo in favor of building meego 4m scratch, i find maemo very competing still nokias own system, they could improved 2 work in mid-range fons like n8, while building meego 4 high end.

now after other companies lost interest in symbian, if they dun upgrade it fast with new qt GUI it will become more like bada.
i have N8, n i always been nokia fan, but it should improve its current systems or adopt another popular platform, be4 it was about brand name, now with completion its about better OS, more apps n faster services.

  13. nocare says:

if meego is gone, stupid nokia ceo

  14. waloody88 says:

    BTW
its not possible 2 drop meego, did u forget that its not just nokias, its Moblin n maemo, collaboration deal, they can’t just ditch it.

if they will drop, its goin 2 be Symbian OS, coz it lost its name.

  15. Anonymous says:

Don’t know what to think at this point quite frankly. It is now a double edged sword till we find out what Nokia is planning on Feb. 11. It’s a shame because I LOVE Symbian^3. I think Nokia got it right with Symbian^3 in many aspects, but then again Elop doesn’t seem to be a fan of it. Let’s see what happens.

  16. Android says:

You MORONS! The end of Nokia is near unless they adopt ANDROID! Only Android can save them!

    • outdated os says:

you _____________ bandwagoneer. Go back to your spaceship.

      • I hate fanboy! says:

Seriously, I swear that Android could actually save Nokia.

I mean ‘could’, they can still survive if they make Symbian or Meego well enough.

I would prefer Android over Symbian at this moment. Unless they delivered a good UI overhaul as promise and attracted enough developer.

Honestly, gaming aside, apps count of Symbian^3 is about the same as symbian^1.

        • Goc says:

          No it couldn’t. Period.

If they adopt Android they are doomed. They will be out-manufactured by all those cheap Android manufacturers like ZTE and other such brands.

Plus they’ll have to wait for 6 months to probably a year until they can release a single Android phone and then they will have fallen too far behind.

It would be a complete disaster.

        • alex68 says:

          Android trolls, go away …

If the world ends today, Nokia will not adopt Android as the first option.

You are basically clueless. Google\s cloud services don\t bring much new value to Nokia, except google mail and google search making some sense. Android is so ugly and dirty, just like monkey’s ass …

  17. alvin says:

Nokia have a big winner in meego, but nokia’s major problem has always been MARKETING and ADVERTISING. They really suck at that and they really need to put their money where their mouth is when i comes to the US market.

Launch Meego and then launch an all out MARKETING AND ADVERTISING assault in the media.

    They need to be aggressive.

All these little teaser videos on youtube etc is not enough for get the word out there for your latest device.

  18. newtype says:

Nokia = Symbian in my mind.

They only need to enhance S^3 in a timely manner, improve the email functionality, improve the web browser, and improve their social integration (by improve, I mean pay Twitter and Facebook to create native apps).

  19. rebelng says:

This article is a fake. Why? Cuz more symbian devices were sold last quater than droids. The article that said otherwise didn’t take into consideration non nokia symbian smartphones. Also, reread “android same on the scene two years ago and this week they took our leadership position in smartphone volumes”. The english in the supposed memo is too vague. Its sooo fake.

What the lot of you talking trash on here fail to realize is that mobile phones aren’t made overnight. What nokia needs right now is to get more devices into the market. making a switch effectively keeps them out till q4.

If elop had made a decision to adopt a new ‘ecosystem’ don’t you think that would reflect in nokias job postings? As far as i know, nokia dont have the staff to port either android or wp7.

Thirdly, nokia couldn’t possibly drop either meego or symbian. Symbian for one is gonna remain a (if not the) major player in the mobile world for years to come. The fan base is just to large.

  20. I hate fanboy! says:

I’m not trying to offence you but you need to know that we are consumer, not employee in Nokia.

I don’t give a shit about their internal conflict I just want something good that I can put my money on.

Please, if you want to express something, just express it, do not behave to be an expert and offend any other commentator here.

btw, I agrees with you that the article is probably a fake. It just appears to be fake.

  21. stylinred says:

the OS is fine.. We all know what the problem is with Nokia and that’s getting their updates/devices out on time + their advertising… what advertising?

all these great devices and updates are shown/told to us and then we don’t see/get them until several months later and sometimes even longer!

And when we finally get these devices and updates; that are great (although not as great as when we first heard about them since so much time has passed) Nokia DOESN’T TELL THE WORLD!! Where’s the Advertising??? where’s the advertising in markets that you WANT to penetrate??? (North America)

Where’s the subsidy deals? (We have them in Canada but not the USA)

I believe those are the overriding issues at Nokia and the fact that they’ve had that VERY European attitude of “we’re the best… people will know we don’t have to tell/show/bring them anything they will come to us when we provide it” you know that Very pompous attitude; I’ve been fine with that attitude because quite honestly I love their products and still do.

But that isn’t going to work for North America; Even when Nokia was on top NA was ignored (we all know that) and now when Nokia needs/wants the NA market they’re still ignoring them…

The OS is fine… just get things out QUICK and get them out when your Promise them… and when its out BLOODY ADVERTISE

But it sounds like ELOP wants to “take a plunge” a risk it sounds… and that’s worrying very much so… it could mean disaster and somehow I don’t think Elop is that stupid to risk it all….

    Friday can’t come soon enough

    • deep space bar says:

i hope he’s not dumb enough to drop symbian cause that why they made Qt in the first place to get apps from iOS,BBOS and androidOS available on the symbian and meego

  22. Bob says:

Whilst waiting for the last year for Nokia to release a Meego device l got a WP7 phone.

I really like it. Better than my N8
(although the N8 takes MUCH better photos).

Just saying, you could be pleasently suprised.

    • alex68 says:

But which one do you actually use most, WP7 or N8?

    • Average Joe says:

If I bought an OEM phone, such as a WP7 one, I’d buy one from ZTE or Huawei. Same features, for a fraction of the price.

So far Bada aside, only Apple and Nokia have unique OSes. iOS is the king of closeness and elitism, Nokia is the king of openness and availability.

If Nokia becomes another ZTE, which I doubt because I suppose labour costs are pretty higher in Finland than in the far east, I see no point in buying Nokias anymore.

  23. Peter says:

Given the recent developments in both Symbian and Meego, I just don’t see Nokia dropping either one. It just makes no sense or would be a giant giving the finger to either OS.

    Meego:

“Hi Intel, now that Meego is almost ready, we decided we want to make an android after all lol”

    Symbian:

“Hey here’s a great business smartphone E7, you can start buying it now.”

“Oh I right forgot to say that we’re discontinuing it next week.”

    • RVM says:

Good point. I hope they are not gonna drop Qt. Nothing is sure these days though, let’s wait 2 more days…

      • Peter says:

Only scenario I can see them dropping Symbian would be in several phases. This scenario involves Nokia betting it all on Meego.

        1) Discontinuing handsets and support from S60 (3rd and 5th) during 2011-2012

        - Concentrate making S40 more refined/competetive in budget models.

        2) Discontinuing handsets of Symbian^3 but still supporting that platform at least through 2012.

        - No new or only a few more Symbian models, but still bringing the new QT UI and updates, otherwise they would piss off way too many of their loyal customers.

This is the only feasible solution I can see with my limited knowledge of the topic. They can’t drop it immediately anyway, so it would happen in phases. Thanks to the QT, Symbian^3 ecosystem would remain alive during the transition to the Meego.

        • Average Joe says:

But any discontinuation announcement, no matter how far in time, will kill every investment in the affected platforms. Even more so for younger platforms such as Qt.

          A CEO would know that.

  24. nocare says:

    well

mokia want to sink and die, let it be
but relaese n9 first, then go to hell

  25. Antonio says:

If Nokia ever uses Android on their phones, I will NEVER EVER get any of them. I have tried using android countless times and it’s just such a terrible OS, it lacks A LOT of functions that Symbian has and is plain boring and unintuitive to use. Why so many buttons and hidden options? I never know what is going to happen when I press the same button on different screens.

To me, Symbian resembles Windows, iOS resembles Mac (not surprisingly) and Android resembles some very underpowered, limited, resource-hungry and cut down bad build of a work-in-progress linux build.

There is absolutely no problem with Symbian^3: it is lightweight, it’s very simple to use, it works very well and is the mobile OS with the best and most integrated features that either are not supported in other platforms or requires many additional “app” downloads to be available. There’s absolutely no problem with Symbian: the problem is with Nokia.

Ok, we get it, Symbian is lightweight. But we’re not running only Symbian on our phones! We’re running apps! And games! Moreover, games need a lot of resources to run and the most resources you have, the better the games and the better the support for them.

Who the hell thought 256MB of RAM was enough? If you get the brand new phone you’ll have 140mb free. Fill three home screens with widgets and webtv content and just one of the THREE home screens will use about 40MB of RAM! Now multiply this by three and you’re out of memory. Games use a lot of RAM too, but if there is not enough RAM, there will not be enough games released for the platform too! I myself after installing 287 apps boot up my phone with 114mb free (no apps running on background, and only two home screens with just shortcut widgets!).

New Symbian devices ought to come with a MINIMUM of 512MB RAM, and releasing the Nokia N8 with only 256mb RAM was a big mistake.

It’s time Nokia started seeing their Symbian smartphones with different perspectives and noticing you need a lot better hardware (processor, RAM, gpu, etf), even on a lightweight OS.

    • Antonio says:

By the way, I wrote all of that on my Nokia N8. Though, ironically, I’m not using thr phone’s default browser (Nokia mistake), I’m using Opera Mobile because it is just so much better than the default browser. And guess what? It needs more RAM to open the 12 tabs-at-the-same-time style of browsing I’m used to surf on the net. CAN YOU HEAR ME, NOKIA? Where are your Symbian phones with 512, 768MB and 1GB of RAM? I would love to buy one of the latter, but YOU JUST DIDN’T MAKE ANY OF THEM!

    • deep space bar says:

the updates will help alot that’s why they make them and PR1.1 just gave us 10mb free on boot

    • alex68 says:

Why on earth you have installed 287 apps? Do you need them all or do you even remember to use them at all?

I am totally amazed by the number of apps you have installed to you N8. Nothing else…
