Where’s my (Windows) phone update?

| March 24, 2011 | 45 Replies

Microsoft have released a resource that will sort of help you track down the status of your updates.

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/features/update-schedule.aspx

The unknown delivers a lot of anxiety, so I think it helps slightly that there’s some concrete information about what exactly is going on with your update than rather vague things such as “Early 2011″. The Windows Phone update schedule though still isn’t very helpful with giving actual dates – though it does state what “phase” that update it in for your carrier.

I feel the pain of having a branded handset. With all the ridiculous regional variants, we don’t all get the same updates at the same ruddy time. What more should Nokia vastly change Windows Phone experience with these added Nokia only features.

Having network variants is preferable from the operators perspective of added customization, but for the consumers it means delays from Nokia/WP making variants, delays from the operator testing, and delays if the tests should fail and Nokia/WP starting all over again. e.g. O2 and the Nokia N97. That never even properly reached O2 shelves. I guess it would be preferable to have delayed updates than have, say, Samsung’s shodiness with support result in Updates bricking your devices.

I’m not sure the grass is that much greener on the greenbot side. I don’t follow it, but I sure also see lots of complaints about “where is 2.2? 2.3?”.

But that’s the path when we want to get these phones on contract/subsidized with a phone plan.

“Stage 1: Testing
The software update is undergoing mobile operator network and quality tests.

Stage 2: Scheduling
Operator testing is complete, and Microsoft is scheduling the update for delivery. This phase typically lasts 10 days or less.

Stage 3: Delivering update
Microsoft has started to send out the update. Because updates are typically delivered to customers in batches, it might take several weeks before you receive notice that an update is available for you.”

Yippie I’ve found a Windows Phone fansite. It must be the only one on the entire Web.

    • Jay Montano says:

You read the content, just see “windows” and assume what I’m saying is all positive for Microsoft.

I am being open minded. I will call out something when I see something needs to be called out. I wont blindly just love everything Nokia because I’m a Nokia fan and I write about Nokia things.

Having followed Nokia for such a long time, I know a LOT of things that I love about Nokia but then there are recurring annoyances which I will not ignore. I’m sorry if I cannot evangelize Nokia and forget their faults for fear of it repeating. I guess when we make complaints about Windows Phone, that’s ignored. When we make positive comments about Windows Phone, ZOMG we’re a blind MS fanboys.

Also going through some stuff which means I’m generally more ratty than usual. But that will go for everyone, not just Nokia.

Oh look, a shitwit who can’t even choose a proper name.

Honeslty, if the guys won’t say it I will: Go die in a fire, you fucktard.

      That is all.

You win a prize for being the 1000th comment to say that.

      As another reader said:

      Is this mySYMBIANblog? NO.

      It’s MY – NOKIA – BLOG.
Did Microsoft and Nokia Announce a partnership? Are Nokia going to be making Windows Phones? Is Nokia’s primary smart phone focus going to be Windows Phone?

Continue trolling if that’s how you get your kicks.

      • Yemi says:

Why bother replying to these trolls? Some or most are delusional. “Elopes has jumped jobs” – Maybe he’s that good that he gets good results. Are these Nokia or Symbian or meego trolls smarter than Nokia board that hired Elop? I don’t think so.

Whether we all like it or not, windows phone OS is here to stay on Nokia. I played with a WP7 HD7 the other day and wow that phone was fast. Transitions were silky smooth when compared to ALL phone software.

Anyone who has nokia’s best interest in mind will pick up WP7 and try it out. I think this blog truly has that.

As stated above, control yourself from clicking if you don’t like the title of the post.

If I or you wants to buy a mobile phone today with WP, which mobile phone brand can we choose ? Can we choose Nokia … Can we choose HTC, can we choose Samsung …

Write about Windows Phone today, isn´t write about Nokia. That´s fact, not trolling.

        • Rant says:

Writing about MeeGo isn’t Nokia then either.

What phone/tablet can you buy with MeeGo? Can we choose Nokia? Can we choose WeTab?

Write about MeeGo today, isn’t writing about Nokia. That’s fact, not trolling.

          • pep says:

Meego is developed and sponsored by nokia and intel. Since nokia is throwing a lot of money on it, meego should be considered.

            • pep says:

and meego is the next version of maemo which is N900 and there is possiblity that meego can run on n900.

              • Rant says:

And WP7 is the next platform for Nokia to build phones for/with.
Nokia is also adding features to WP and also getting features from it.

                Problem?

The point is, both MeeGo and WP aren’t available on Nokia hardware right out of the box. So not writing about WP means there shouldn’t be any news about MeeGo either.

          • Guest says:

Nokia has no tablet so thats irrelevant. So who sells Meego Phones did you say?

Can we choose HTC for MeeGo? can we choose Samsung for MeeGo? …

  3. dfa says:

Like you said it’s ‘mynokiablog”. Does Nokia had already release a windows phone? No.

    • Jay Montano says:

Did Nokia already have MeeGo phones? Yet it’s ok to keep updated on what’s happening in MeeGo world.

Did Nokia already have Symbian^3 phones? Yet it’s ok to keep updated back when there were no S^3 handsets.

      • Arts says:

when blogs get famous this kinda of shit comes in.

      • Guest says:

Yes Nokia has N900 ready for MeeGo.

        • Jay Montano says:

N900 is a maemo 5 phone that can run non finalized meego. It’s going to get developer version meego. Not for mass market.

Do you see Nokia N900 on sale with MeeGo? No.

      • yasu says:

Between S^3, Meego and WP7 one of them is a foreign body pushed by a another corporation while the others are homegrown solutions. I’ll let the reader determine which is which.

I’d like to add that Nokia building Windows Phones – oh man – isn’t yet a done deal, it’s still not yet signed.

That said, as an ardent Windows Phone at Nokia detractor, I don’t mind the articles.

    • Jay Montano says:

p.s. A lot of Nokia STAFF have picked up Windows Phone 7 devices that AREN’T Nokia to get a grips of what this OS is about.

We are all following the transition with as much detail as we can to understand what it is that we’ve gotten into.

p.p.s. The post has a title. If you don’t like it, don’t click it.

  4. David says:

This site is called mynokiablog and not myelopblog. Nobody inside Nokia backs Elop’s ideas and most expect that the will be gone by the end of the year (like he did before: switched 6 times the company within 4 years!).

    • Rant says:

If it was called myelopblog I guess you would be reading more about what cereal the man had.

And nobody backs his ideas? So he just acted alone? There was no approving board or whatsover? Weird?

Just don’t blame the man for making a decision he didn’t entirly make on his own. It was a decision made by more than one man.

BTW; him switching 6 times within 4 years is not true. He worked at MS from 2008 till joining Nokia, before that he worked at Juniper Networks whatever that is. Before that he had a postition with Adobe that he got because of Adobe acquiring Macromedia of which he was CEO for 7 years.

      • Rant says:

Just sprung to mind, never knew Elop was CEO of the one time great Macromedia. That company made some very powerfull and easy to use design programs.
So the man does know what it takes to make something usable.
All the ease of use of Macromedia was killed by Adobe unfortunatly though.

      • pep says:

maybe thats why adobe got a chance to acquire macromedia

        • Rant says:

LOL, that’s what’s going to happen to Nokia as well. Elop inserted to destroy the company so it can be bought by M$ –trololololol–

          • Yemi says:

I dig your sarcasm. Lol. Its like people would still believe whatever they want to even with the facts presented to them.

  5. outdated os says:

guys, either tone down or just ignore m$ articles. It’s easy.

    Inhale…exhale…inhale…

  6. Zaxxx says:

It because Nokia fans = symbian fans. That’s the reason why i really don’t like any related windows phone news. Sorry..:)

  7. Rant says:

Bashing someone is easier than doing something better yourself.

I propose all the anit-WP flamers here just start there own blow and try to get it to the same level Jay did.
Then you can just control all the news you post yourself.

It isn’t like you pay money to read here, it’s free so STFU if there is something you don’t like. Just don’t read it or comment on it.

  8. aboodesta says:

Stop annoying us all with comments about how much you hate MS. Nokia has adopted MS, deal with it. I have a Nokia N8, but if Nokia produces an awesome WP phone I will definitely give it a try. Trying new things in life won’t hurt you. If you don’t like windows topics, don’t bother us all with your repeated comments.

    • pep says:

Then why symbian users are not hating meego? They know that meego will replace most of the symbian’s section. They would have love wp7 if it had been gud enough but thats not whats happening here.

  9. sebastian says:

Keep up the good work Jay & co, don’t let the haters drain your motivation. I think you’re doing a great job covering all Nokia related news.

And you don’t have to love symbian to love Nokia, symbian is the reason I have had a Android phone for the last year.

it’s amazing that Jay has the tolerance to respond to all the haters

  12. Just Visiting says:

Jay, great post! Microsoft is obviously trying to be more transparent regarding the update process for this OS (and future iterations); they actually ‘listened’ to their customers (some of who weren’t very happy about not having more info) and put up this ‘Where’s My Phone Update’ site to, at least, give users an idea of where their particular handset and carrier was in the process (both Internationally and in the US) and they will update the site every week. In a roundabout way, it also lets users know which carriers are dragging their feet to get this rolled out, so that they can put the pressure on (hint: AT&T). Actually, I’ve never heard of any other OS maker doing this for their customers! At the end of the day, some WP7 users may still be disappointed that they don’t have their update ‘right now’ but at least they have a roadmap, so to speak, as to when they will likely get it.

  13. David says:

Too little too late. WP7 is pretty much dead already. Almost all dealers are trying to have a sale for their WP7 but it seems nobody wants them anymore.

You can get the Omnia 7 (16GB) for around 260 € in Germany, the HTC Mozart or LG Optimus 7 are available for 200-230€ now (all unlocked of course!). And that’s just 6 months after they have been released with price points from 400-550€…

  14. brwneagle says:

Keep up the good work Jay.

  15. Chris_Skylock says:

This is a Nokia Blog. Anything Nokia related should be priority. If Nokia has WP, then WP7 Nokia topics should be.

I hate Windows Phone but reading this Nokia Blog should be respected as a NOKIA BLOG.

If I were the owner of this blog or the Editor in Chief, I will only post Nokia related. But since WP7 is also a part of other OEMs, I’ll leave to the real owner of this blog.

Again, MyNokiaBlog is about Nokia’s plans, decisions and products even though I have Microsoft’s mobile platform.
