ITC Staff Recommends Siding With Nokia, (& HTC) in Apple Case

Are you paying attention to the Apple-Nokia patent wars? Confused slightly? Do you care?

If you do, bloomberg reports that ITC Staff recommends siding with Nokia, that Nokia are not infringing on Apple patents.

http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-04-18/itc-staff-recommends-siding-with-nokia-htc-in-apple-patent-case.html

This is different to Nokia’s suing of Apple, for which they have filed a second ITC complaint after Apple some how won a patent dispute with Nokia (where they apparently are not infringing on Nokia’s patents…miraculously with their own magical iAntennas huh)

ITC also recommended siding with HTC too vs Apple. In other news, Apple is suing Samsung for copying iPhone and iPad’s “look and feel”….hmm…look and feel….deja vu… Well, though it’s difficult to “innovate” around a rectangular screen (to maximise space, you’re gonna be identical to the screen shape), the Samsung Galaxy S has always been a blatant rip-off from iPhone (which does look like the LG Prada before both devices, in being a rectangular mostly touch screen device).

It’s not just the app launcher. Symbian and many predecessors have that. It’s just the entire combination of the shape of the device, the home button placement, the 4×4 bar with a bottom four row grid.

Same goes for Galaxy Ace which in UK adverts, my friends keep confusing for an iPhone 4. That silver sandwhich does remind a lot of N81.

Nexus S looks different, Focus, Omnia 7. Nokia E7 shows that you don’t have to be strictly rectangular. N8 too obviously (though we did make early comments that it looks like there’s an iPhone in the N8, what with it simply being synonymous with black rectangular screens :S)

Cheers T-SHO.

Almost every touchscreen phone right now is like an exact replica of the iPhone. No, not only Samsung but also LG and Motorola, mostly droid phones. Nokia still make the best designed phones. The N8 is such a sight to behold. Too bad they are not being awarded for it.

    • Dave says:

Agreed that the N8 is a truly fantastic piece of design, similarly with the E7.

But the iPhone was not a new or unique design, and to be honest there’s not much flexibility in design with a purely touch screen design.

      • nocare says:

there are so much room for improvement in the nokia n8 design,

speaker should be moved to the bottom end
no ugly bezel please, dust already gone into that large gap
no more glossy surface for hdmi cover, it is impossible not to scratch it

being simple and basic are apple slogan

        • Dave says:

Surprisingly I haven’t had any problems (or scratches) with the HDMI cover, despite a fair amount of use.

        • Smith says:

Yes, the iPhone is indeed horribly simple and basic, especially in it’s physical robustness and durability – drop an iPhone from waist height and it will shatter. How can anyone think that is good design!? A phone as delicate as a china teacup! Insane. But typical of Apple.

Meanwhile, Nokia build phones to last. My N82 was the toughest phone I have seen in my life, and the N8 will easily survive a 3 metre drop onto concrete.

        • dpr says:

wow, seriously still Nokia phones face the dust getting between screen problem? And I am more surprised to see even N8 has this issue.

  2. Dave says:

It is *very* confusing as to precisely whats going on, the only thing that is clear is the lawyers/legal teams are the only real winners.

Glad you mentioned the silver sandwich having echos of the N81 – thats precisely what I thought when I first saw the iPhone 4 ….

  3. Smith says:

Can anyone think of ANYTHING Apple have made that wasn’t in some way a ripoff of earlier work done by other people? I can’t. All Apple do is steal stuff then polish it and rerelease it.

“Ahh … Patents … the glue of evolution.”

Maybe in some cases we shouldn’t wear our Nokia (or Apple or even Android) glasses and look at these things companywise but as general consumers.

As consumers “evolution” should be our benefit. These patents tend to just slow things down. I believe that there already lots of WOWs in labs ready and waiting … but before we can see them we need to buy the so called “in between” versions.

    Or what do you think?

  5. cgf says:

why nokia not copy apple multitouch keyboard, copy perfect flickr scrolling, copy apple graphics design, copy apple restriction, etc

  6. Subashish says:

With all the ‘fun’ that I have had with iphone design, can’t say I’m a big fan anymore. And now I think I should have just got myself an ipod touch, as that’s what people think I’m using when I use my iphone4. And wonderful isn’t it that while my N8 survived a drop of 2m on concrete (rather scratchless), while the accelerometer of iphone stopped working after a little bump in my trouser pocket.

  7. stylinred says:

what i h8 about these patent suits is that they take forever :/

    • meegomad says:

true i hope apple just dies

apple can’t join with nokia because nokia and microsoft would never allow that

i like diversity i dont want everyone having the exact same block, not to mention it looks crap, cheap, and maintaing costs are unbelievable
