Video: Angry Birds on S60 3rd Edition Nokia E5.

| April 25, 2011 | 28 Replies

Shymon has tipped us of a video showing the ever popular Angry Birds on a non-touch S60 3rd Edition, FP2 rocking Nokia E5.

It’s not as slick looking as what we’ve seen on the N8 or N900, though both are significantly more powerful and touch devices. Having said that, it does look like the S60 5th edition version (see the second video) but somewhat smoother than the Angry Birds on 5800. (Does anyone know if that works with the D-Pad?)

This looks like a fan developed version as Rovi puts more polish and quality control on their games. Granted, I haven’t looked up any info and it is 5:28am so I may be missing the obvious…… :)

It´s just a fan-made mod of Monthy Pyton´s Cow Tossing, avaliable since months.

    Slow news day.

Seems like it’s going to be a slow summer for Nokia as the developers are keeping busy getting PR2.0 and 3.0 out the door, while another team crafts the Nokia WP lineup.

Perhaps the new versions of S^3 have been done for months and they’re just pretending to keep busy, but actually trying to get 3 stars on all the levels. Either way, the world will never know.

I hope it was a slow day (although I have a backlog of posts I’ve been wanting to publish)as I’m racing to hand in my SSC component. I don’t want to read anything techy/Nokia related as I’ll know I’ll get distracted. Service will resume a normal or close to soon within the next 24 hours.

    Yes, slow news everywhere.

Well, I have a Nokia Astound now, in addition to my N8 and N900 T-Mobile G2 and the Astound is a joy to use. The updated Symbian^3.1 OS feels snappier, “lighter” (as in less sluggish and tank like, seemingly less menus). The icons have been altered and are larger (not the famous new icons but redesigned current icons). The draggable homescreens make a huge difference on first impressions and makes my N8 homescreens feel “broken” even though the actual usage is about the same.

The HD video on the C7 Astound is fantastic as far as sharpness due to edof but has lower detail, especially when zoomed in. Yes, the camera has the intelligent zoom that adjusts as you zoom BUT the optics produce more “noise” in the video so the effect is lessened when artifacts appear in the video. It appears the video stabilization is a tad bit better than on the N8.

The portrait qwerty does make a difference, though not neccessary for me, it is a great option and does make my N8 seem restricted without the “option” to switch it. I disable swype, even with the portrait swype as I can type quicker with the standard keyboard.

I avoid the “new” browser as the performance increase (3x faster than the old browser that was more than 3x slower than other browsers does NOT make it fast enough or competitive) Opera 11 does it for now. Though I do prefer the new browser UI.

Oddly, NFS Shift DOES NOT WORK WITH THE Astound. It will glitch and lock up the phone everytime, requiring a reboot and immediate uninstall. I have tried it on more than one Astound. This is the first instance that I have run into a truly incompatible S^3 game.

Another incompatibility. It appears that Dolyby 5.1 either has been altered or removed. Example, there is a drm free HD movie that came with my N8, Wild Ocean that has Dolby Digital Plus. When transfered to the Astound, the Audio is disable and shows a red x. I have tested this on multiple Astounds. I don’t know what causes this. I need more files to test but so far the sound is lost and clicking on Details during the video, the info for Dolby is removed as well.

BIG ISSUE: Ovi Store tells me that I have to REPURCHASE all of my paid content due to some fake error saying I have to update my apps to a compatible version. Instead of allowing me to make a fake update, it just allows me to buy the apps again. What? Yes, buy the SAME non-updated apps.

It gets better (sarcasm), now, when I access the store on my N8, it tells me to update my apps to a compatible version, hence buy again. But wait, they are already installed on my N8….so how are they incompatible.

I contacted Ovi and they sent a stupid reply saying that explaining how to redownload my apps from the my account page…totally missing the point of what I wrote to them about.

The Astound beautifully made, seriously, that is one nice looking phone. My N8 looks like it is from the industrial revolution and made out of spare tank treads (good thing) compared to the sleek and slim Astound.

The Astound is an AMAZING device, especially for the asking price. The update OS is great, the camera is ahead of TMobiles current offering (yes, even the G2x with high specs, less impressive optics and software processing). I also like the transparent widgets, they go a long way by supplying modernization and eye candy to the UI. Is it necessary? No. Is it nice? Yes. Is it an improvement over what other S^3 devices offer? Yes.

I recommend the phone to anyone that doesn’t need a 12MP Xenon combo on the N8 but wants a sleek and powerful phone.

Glad to hear about the improvements in S^3 performance. In addition to homescreen switching, is the Astound snappier than the N8 when it comes to everyday tasks like browsing through folders, opening up and replying to texts, dialing, etc?

I like the N8, but the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) hiccups and slugs I experience (PR1.2) are an annoyance, albeit a minor one. I honestly don’t care how they dress S^3 up, as long as it performs smoothly all the time (with 2-4 light apps open simultaneously).

      • Deaconclgi says:

Overall it performs slightly faster. The homescreen transitions are faster and makes the phone more enjoyable to use as the screen responds more quickly.

I haven’t experienced “menu stutter” like I do on my N8. This could be for a number of reasons, but it is a better experience.

Heavy tasks such as installing apps still make the phone lag like crazy, this appears to be a problem inherent in the Symbian OS.

        Applications load about the same.

Most of the snappiness comes from UI improvements via faster and smoother transitions.

To answer: I would rather use S^3 on the Astoound than on the N8. It is smoother and faster for everyday use.

I can’t wait for Anna/PR2.0 for my N8 so I can get the best experience with the best hardware.

If you are on T-Mobile USA, I highly recommend the device. When I look at it, it is hard to believe the T-Mobile branding and C7 are on the same device.

        • Deaconclgi says:

Browsing Folders seems snappier but that could be just because of less folders within the 8GB compared to what is on my N8. Opening and replying to texts isn’t noticibly faster, dialing seems faster, rotation of orientation seems faster.

The phone lagged crazily upon the initial setup on the first day but since then it has been smooth sailing. My wife loves the phone and so do the kids. They “accept” it more than the N8 due to simple things like UI transitions and the small, sleek, shiny design.

          • Mendax says:

            Thanks for your replies.

I would imagine that the roundness and general shine of the C7 hardware definitely caters to a more mainstream audience (I guess T-Mo thought so too, since they don’t offer the N8).

Still, I love the solid metal “industrial” design of the N8. You described it perfectly in saying that it resembles a tank. A little rough around the edges, sure, but if I can’t (accidentally) drop/abuse a Nokia phone and have it live to tell the tale, well… :D
