Nokia RM-680/Nokia N950/N9 passes FCC -Looks like the QWERTY N9 leaked from last year

| May 11, 2011 | 110 Replies

Just minutes after publishing that MeeGo N950 tweet from ArguellesPictures (4g n950 smartphone coming this summer), we have more xciting news that the RM-680/Nokia N9 has recently been approved by FCC.

https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=339630&fcc_id=%27LJPRM-680%27

Now if we look at engadget’s teardown of a leaked N950 last year

What does it look like? It’s not 100% perfect, but it sure does match up to a lot.

That’s a hinge right? It’s somewhat shaped like the very early designs that we were told were scrapped. It might still look like this it might not. Dang, I thought I’d be using one of these by now.

Yay! Come on Nokia, show us what you’ve got!

Jay —> Happy Face! Looks like an autobot, no?

Update: Yemi confirms it is a slider, reading from the test reports:

“The device has internal antennas for both cellular and WLAN use. The cellular antenna is located
at the bottom in the back section of the keypad slide. The WLAN antenna is located at the top in
the back section of the keypad slide”

Update 2: Deaconclgi notes from the confidentiality letter a request. That means, external photos and manuals :D . Oh the manual of this will be one to read. :D

Less than 45 days until all will be revealed!!!

This is the request for confidentiality:

  1. Deaconclgi says:

According to the FCC Test 1 docs, the RM680 uses a BL-4D battery and if it is the same as the current one, it is only 1200mAH…..

    Sigh…..when will Nokia learn….

    • deep space bar says:

are you serious :( but didn’t nokia mention that their new updates will have 25% more battery life and all the apps are being written in Qt 5 so i guess it might be acceptable with the battery life but i would like 1500mah just to get more use out if it and i hope they finally have a finished full UI of meego made by nokia

    • Ninja says:

It’s not battery capacity that matters at all, but battery LIFE. If they can increase battery life by improving components and software then that is a much better solution than the cop-out that other manufacturers take which is to just stick a bigger battery in the case. Honestly, it really is :)

      • deep space bar says:

i hope so cause symbian need that update we nred the 25% more juice squeezed out of be 1200mah battery since it will be alittle bit faster with the symbi3n phones

    • outdated os says:

mugen power will save the day.

    • aikon171 says:

This is a pic leaked last year.
      http://tieba.baidu.com/f?kz=856774587
      It’s BV-4D which is 1320mAh…

  2. Deaconclgi says:

Also, the docs are from April 12th even though they have been made public as of today…

  3. Shamal Harkison says:

    I’m just praying this doesn’t mean its coming with the 2010 soc also… Needs a 1.2ghz processor ? :)

  4. Deaconclgi says:

ATT 3.5G friendly and NOT Tmobile friendly :(

    1.1. EUT and Accessory Information
The EUT is a 9-band (GSM850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA Band I/II(1900)/IV(1700)/V(850)/VIII) mobile phone with GPRS, EGPRS, Bluetooth and WLAN. Bluetooth and WLAN are tested with maximum rated TX power.

TmoUSA 3.5G band is 1700/2100 and you need both.

    • Yemi says:

I can confirm it is Pentaband with all the HSUPA out there supported. Here is a quote from the RF exposure results:
      “C.4. HSUPA1700/2100 Test results”
      “1700/2100MHz Body SAR results”

      Other goodies:
      “WLAN b-mode”
      “WLAN n-mode 20MHz”
This simply implies the phone has WLAN b, g and n

    • Deaconclgi says:

      WCDMA1700/2100

Listed as being tested in the SAR reports!

  5. Rock says:

WANT WANT WANT PLEASE MAKE !

  6. Yemi says:

This is mentioned everywhere on the radiation test results: “Type: RM-680; Serial: 004402/13/293375/9″
Its definitely N9 type slider since its mentioned that the radiation test to the head was done with the slide closed.

  7. umar says:

    yes yes yes
    meee wants meego
    *drools all over*

  8. Zaxxx says:

Here Mee Go again…another rumours sigh…:-(

Less than 45 days until we can see what the device looks like and see the user manual!!!!

    • Yemi says:

You just beat me to that lol. This does not guarantee Nokia would reveal in 45 days. But you never know.

  10. Deaconclgi says:

    More tidbits: Hotspot mode!!!

This is a BT Class 1 device; as its power tuning target is 6dBm (4mW), SAR testing was deemed
    unnecessary.

This device has Wireless Router “Hotspot” mode capability.

    2.1 Description of the Antenna
The device has internal antennas for both cellular and WLAN use. The cellular antenna is located
at the bottom in the back section of the keypad slide. The WLAN antenna is located at the top in
the back section of the keypad slide.

  11. Tivisiana says:

Yeah .. noticed i’d spelt it wrong after posting it. Great news nonetheless

  12. Viipottaja says:

Very interesting as someone close to Nokia told me recently he thinks it will be the qwertyless model.. unless they release both.. haha.. not likely.

    • Jay Montano says:

Yeah the QWERTY one was supposed to be scrapped for a plain candybar, but now this is back. Just for the geeks?

      • NT says:

I do think it makes sense as a sequel to the “geek” units N810/N900 as both had qwerty. I understand the even older N7xx and N800 didn’t but as this is not their “main smartphone” to compete with the android/ios slabs, they might have made that decision.

(that is if this didn’t turn our to be a WP7 unit…j/k)

    • Deaconclgi says:

On the bottom of the test docs, it does say:

      FCC_RM-680_03

I don’t want to add any rumors to the facts…but who knows…..

      • Keizka says:

But rumours are oh so fun!

Mind you, this is mere speculation, but could be a third iteration of the original RM-680 of which we saw hints of last autumn? With updated specs perchance?

      • Goc says:

Perhaps that means they’ve updated the specs?
        I don’t remember the original N9 as a 4G phone.

        • Keizka says:

Tissot shot me down on MR-forums. Apparently RM-680_03 has seen the daylight on mailing lists around last November earliest. Then again, can’t really verify it quickly but if that’s true…

Mind you, it can still be a tad updated, eh? Let’s hope so at least :P

          • Pdexter says:

            Tissot here KeiZka. ;)

That the RM-680_3 was on the mailing lists by the end of Q4 last year i guess could mean anything as far as spec goes? We are talking about software so if it wasn’t worked at that time already, especially if it would be getting new SOC that would be worrying. :D

I have no idea how Nokia threats _X. Is it about small hw tweaks, cosmetic changes or can they change something as major as SOC?

I certainly prefer qwerty but i was hoping that RM-680 was scrapped as it’s so old. Hoping that Dsmobile is right.

            • Keizka says:

              Aaah, good to know ;)

Indeed, depending on how closely they have knit the OS to SoC this time around.

Well, month or so and we’ll see, eh?

              • Pdexter says:

                I REALLY hope so. :)

This phone has had it’s announcement day possible any day for the past 9 months.
Would be nice to see the result finally, what ever it will be.

  13. Yemi says:

Im currently searching(on google and bing) for the serial numbers listed for the parts in the reports.
I will post a reply once I find something.

    • Deaconclgi says:

I was trying the same thing….I have stayed 24 minutes past my time off at work digging for info. I need to leave lol.

      I hope you find something!

    • Pdexter says:

Heh you can’t even imagine how much people know about RM-680 and how many hours some of us Nokia fans have spent gathering info of this RM-680 since 8 months it popped in some Nokia mailing lists.

RM-680 will have TI soc inside, that much i can tell.

You can find hundreds of mailing lists about RM680, people digging info over at maemo.org, insiders from HW, MR forums. Searching for the Nokia and TI devs names.

Spec is 80% known. The thing that’s surpring here is that they are still releasing RM-680 and not many many of the other newer protos talked with MeeGo that any of could have been Lankku.

      • Deaconclgi says:

Maybe after Elop gave Meego the bench, they decided to scrap further hardware developments and revert back to the original design to save money on R&D especially since Meego is no longer a top priority. That is the only explanation that I can think of. Either way, it is nice to see a product materialize after so much talk and waiting.

  14. wes? says:

Could as well be the dual diplay 3D Communicator – just dreaming ;)
    http://mynokiablog.com/2011/05/04/nokias-dual-display-3d-communicator-seen-in-patent-app/
I’d be perfectly happy with a E7 formfactor MeeGo/Maemo/Harmattan device. Still for a slider the camera won’t be as good as the N8′s…

  15. Rudeboi says:

Hell yeah! Finally can put my N900 to rest. All I needed was a updated version of the N900, thinner and a better front facing camera and hd everything! Not really into apps and thats why I’m not using my Iphone 4. To me the N900 is more of a communicator then the E7

    • FireDragon says:

Nokia N900 was the first of the Nokias that I sort of liked very much but because of its shape and size I didn’t pick it up tho I always (and still) say that little guy is a mean machine in mobile world. Just wish if N900 came in something like this (or E7-ish) form. I wouldn’t mind a thicker E7-ish design for N900.

  16. Phishbone says:

CPU/GPU specs? I love my N900, but I’d put it to rest early for this baby.

    Gah!! Waiting sucks.

    • Yemi says:

hope the previous tweet about athens wasnt correct that its about x7 and e6
really hope its for this meego monster
btw here a hope i dont see Edof in it
    :(

  18. 00 says:

Just in time to change my N900…

  19. m1keFB says:

I agree it would be nice to see a replacement for the N900.

It makes sense for Nokia to keep using TI’s OMAP.

I wonder if they will take the opportunity to upgrade to OMAP 36xx?

Will this use the Maemo 6 / MeeGo OS?

  20. Zak says:

I just hope, it’ll have the same skype integration like n900 had. I HOPE Nokia don’t take away the features they’ve given in n900.

  21. Fossi says:

Haven´t people been talking that the N9/N950/RM-680 would use a INTEL atom processor.

  22. art_vaider says:

If announcement will be this summer , then they will start to sell the device after no less 6 months. So don’t expect it in 2011 :)

  23. hariainm says:

just a question: why all of you asume this device will be with MeeGo on it?
since all of the maemo devices have the RX-XXX code instead of the symbian RM-XXX, its logical to think that RM-680 is not a maemo/meego/whatever device. please probe me i’m wrong. i really want to.

    • Deaconclgi says:

One thing is that the n900 and rm680 fcc ids start with LJX or something and the Symbian do not.

    • Average Joe says:

A few months ago Nokia publicly pushed support into Linux for a thing they called “RM-680 board” (you can google for the mailing list announcements). Thus this thing was meant to run Linux, i.e. Maemo 6, and not Symbian.

It might have been repurposed to run other stuff (I really hope not), but the fact is that it ran Linux *and* already had a RM- name.

BTW if I remember correctly it was an OMAP3 device so we couldn’t expect flagship performance from it. But if for this reason the device was sold at a relatively low price, I’d definitely consider buying it.

  24. Alboooz says:

Wonder, who will ever want such ghetoblaster on his hand, when there is already so much better devices to chose this days!:-/
If this device was already on market five years a go, i em sure it will make sense!
