Judging from hands-on videos, the N9 is ready. Ready to be sold as good as it works. So bring this thing to stores NAO!

  2. Markk117 says:

why wait to sell this masterpiece???

  3. anonymous says:

    woahhh… flooding of video… XD …

  4. BertRulz says:

Not convinced with the swipe. So you cant pan through pictures unless its in landscape? or is it you can but can only go left? im not convinced on this feature yet.

Also web browsing how would the swipe affect that, im sure some features will be lost due to this new feature. I hope im wrong :(

  5. Sayantan says:

nice ph, looks s3xy bt no 12mp wid xenon flash :(

  6. stylinred says:

Id like to know a release date and price

didn’t Elop say that he was doing away with the long time period between announcement and release??

  7. jim says:

    Ok issues/Questions.

You can’t close an app only minimise it? That will mean constant maintenance in the multitasking panel? Why not swipe down or up to close the app, left or right to minimise it.

Are rss feeds just thrown in with social network feeds? I wouldn’t want these all mixed together.

How good is the browser? Don’t think it has text reflow which is not good enough. Can I install opera mini?

Is Alien dalvik gonna be a reality. If it is I’m sold. If Not I’ll wait and see. Apps like whatsapp etc are basically a must for me now (cos all my friends use it)

    Released in Thailand/Thai language support?

Looks slick, want to buy, but will wait and see

    • Harangue says:

I feel somewhat the same way. The swipe thing is nice, but it has given a user just one way to interact with the device.

Apart from excellent hardware design and a new style to use your phone it hasn’t WOW’ed me yet. I was reading up on some Mango preview video’s at a similar time watching this and Mango provides so much more intelligent ways and shortcuts to use your device. True, multitasking with the N9 is king and WP is a piss-poor example.

The feeling I get with this is excellent hardware, but far from polished software. Actually, it feels compromised.

    • stylinred says:

Long press on multitask screen comes up with the option to close apps (little red x’s @ the corner of each pane)

cant remember if i saw this on the developer meego ux site or from another video

anyway its there; that was one of my concerns too ;)

      • jim says:

Yes I know, but like I say it requires constant maintenance in the multitasking panel to make sure you don’t have tonnes open. Surely an option where you could swipe an app down which actually CLOSES an app would be ideal?

I have a similar problem with my N8. I’m always too lazy to wade through the options->exit menu in apps so just hit the physical. But then it inevitably slows down after I end up with tonnes of apps open, so I have to keep going to the multitasking panel to close them down.

        • anonymous says:

but in this case it seems that it isn’t slowing down… have you seen all those open apps and still has smooth reactions… maybe meego is also efficient plus 1gb ram… :)

          • jim says:

Well it must eventually. Point is I see no reason not to have a gesture to close an app. Some apps you just use occasionally and know you want to CLOSE it and not clutter the multitasking screen. I shouldn’t have to first minimise it, then find the multitasking screen, then long press, then find the app and hit the x to do this. Should I?

Make the gesture swipe DOWN from the top. Make it pinch inwards. Give me an X in the corner. Whatever – just let me close it from the app.

            • rebel_ng says:

There are too few gestures possible to have a dedicated one to closing an app. sliding endge to edge, sideways and top-down takes you to the home screens. sliding top down but not from the edge scrolls within the app. Sliding sideways probably does something within the app too. if you want to close an app, go through its menu. Options>exit. Simple.

              • jim says:

Geez you aren’t very imaginative are you. I have already said that sliding from top to bottom in an app would be a great way to close it. There is no reason all 4 swipe directions have to perform the exact same function.

Besides this there are plenty of other gestures you could use.

Yeah, options-exit isn’t THAT hard on symbian either. But it’s hard enough that compared to the alternative it isn’t appealing.

                • camchams says:

I thought about this for awhile a came up with the thought that the bar at the bottom of an application holds the exit bar just like Symbian, and looking from the Handset Screenshots I think this maybe true in most of the screenshots I can see a recurring icon: the one with three lines which maybe something like Options and then you click Exit also the other screenshots mostly have bars at the bottom so you never know. I think that we’re not sure about this because even if it is a feature they would not show it in preview video’s as to show off the multitasking capabilities. If it has to Exit button it would be similar to the iOS’s version of multitasking the user would end up with lots of open apps, yet with the iPhone’s freeze multitasking it would not affect performance and my dad can collect up to 50 apps open without noticing. Luckily for the N9 the multitasking feature is much more there than it is on the iPhone and the user would have to pass it regularly and are reminder while a user who is quite simplistic may not even know about the click the menu button twice to get to open apps feature.

                  • guest says:

I think it works just like other OS’s, you don’t have to close apps, the OS takes care of that. Like Android, there’s no need to close apps. Also, most apps don’t need CPU in the background so they can be just frozen and they don’t consume resources.

However, some apps can be left running such as downloads in background which should be closed manually if they are not needed.

        • MoritzJT says:

Naaa I know that the native S^3 Appmanagement sucks.

For MeeGo you can expect multiple OS Plugins to come that modify the UI and that add new features for interaction, like the proposed different events on different swipe directions. It is highly likely that you can even have more than the 3 Hometabs. I’m pretty sure this is not as closed as you think now.

        • akse says:

Imo closing apps is useless. I saw it with N900. The apps opened more quickly when I needed them again because it was already open and stored in swap.

You probably save battery also when the app is just idling in the memory rather than closing and opening it all the time which uses cpu time.

Unless the app is heavy like a game or something it doensn’t need to be closed IMO so you don’t have to maintain so much in the multitask view. Also the multitask view while might get crowded the lastly used apps appear in the top left.

          • jim says:

“You probably save battery also when the app is just idling in the memory rather than closing and opening it all the time which uses cpu time.”

You must be the first person I’ve ever heard say you SAVE battery by keeping the app running in the background. Maybe if you are open and closing the app every 4 seconds.

Basically I know what apps I want to keep in mutitasking and what apps I don’t when I close the app. So I think it would be cool to have the option to swipe DOWN like you are trashing the app in the dustbin (closing it.) Quite apart from memory concerns some apps you use rarely and don’t particularly want it added to prime position in the multitasking panel.

Having a swipe in all four direction perform the exact same function seems like a wasted opportunity to me.

It does make a diff if these apps are just frozen iphone style or are actually running in the background. I’m not sure which is the case

            • guest says:

No, it’s just complicates things. If you have used Android or iOS or whatever, you don’t have to worry about which apps are open and which are not. Think the multitasking view as ‘recently opened applications’, nothing more. The OS is flawed if it gives CPU to idling applications, which I believe is not the case.

              • jim says:

Well, there are two options. Either the apps are just frozen in state which makes multitasking basically a waste of time and it does just become a list of recently opened apps.

Or it is true multitasking where the tiles are still live which of course is using cpu/battery.

In the n9′s case I believe it’s the latter (except in some things like videos which are frozen for obvious reason.) So it makes sense to me to be able to close an app from the app (in a nice easy way.)

    • Tiv says:

Well most Symbian apps today have an exit button.

  8. A-S-D says:

Question: HOW DO YOU LOCK THE PHONE?!?!?!?!

  9. y76y says:

    much better than n900

i am sure more meego phones from non-NOKIA are on the way after today wow announcement

  10. Juventino says:

    Another question?

How do you make a phone call without going to the main menu and clicking on the phone icon? imo they should have added a a fourth screen for actually…

I will still buy it anyway

  11. slayer says:

The guy’s name is Jussi? B)

  12. DAEX says:

Seems no need the landscape mode like Apple Iphone!!

    • jim says:

Yeah no landscape mode could be the deal breaker for me.

Opera mini is great in landscape mode. Double tap reflows the page to the perfect readable size. Dunno how this browser in portrait only without text reflow is gonna be any good??

      • MoritzJT says:

Opera Mobile for MeeGo/Maemo will still rotate into landscape as will the browser. But for now it lacks a proper content reflow plugin.

        • jim says:

Well I’ll wait and see on that one I guess. No reflow in the demoed browser is not acceptable in this day and age I’m afraid.

Couldn’t they have just used/modified the n900 browser? That was stellar with reflow etc wasn’t it

    • stylinred says:

certain apps and functions have a landscape mode

i imagine the browser would be capable of landscape as well

i think its only the Homescreens that are stuck in portrait

  13. zonk0r says:

when can i buy it and for how much?

anyone think of any ballpark figures?

    I’m going £400 launch price

  14. Paul says:

    No text re-flow ??????

  15. vlgr says:

Ya, wait until Samsung picks this up.. Nokia can keep their Wp7 phones, thanks. So silly, they lead the way, only to drop it at the end… makes NO SENSE!!!

  16. Mapantz says:

Does anyone have any videos of the facebook app that’s built in?

  17. phishbone says:

This will definitely replace my N900.

By the way, fantastic job Jay, Andre and company. The updates have been flowing so quickly my head is spinning.

    • Jay Montano says:

Thanks. There possibly would have been more posts but we have to ration them so as not to overload our hosts. :D

  18. Hypnopottamus says:

LOL! In the 1st video, he was talking about the browser and how responsive it was. He tried to “pinch-tp-zoom” and nothing happened. He then quickly went on to the camera.

I really hope everything works as advertised with this device. Symbian^3 devices were advertised that everything works perfectly, but I found out that wasn’t the case. The 3 basic areas that NEED to work to keep people happy are the browser, the email client, and Social Network client. If these are even halfway decent, I’m there! We shall see!

    • Suabesh says:

You do realize that he tried to do a pinch zoom on a mobile version of a site right ? That was a mistake on his part, not the phone :)

    • Don says:

Yeah, I noticed that too :)

Webkit2 is solid tech though, and my netbook manages fine with half the CPU and half the memory and a crappy SSD, so browsing _should_ be good, but man add text reflow already!

Of course since it’s Linux it should be able to run any browser; Opera even makes browsing on my N8 pretty much pleasant, so they should be able to put out something great.

  19. figaro says:

Battery is not removable! What to do if phone freezes and power button doesnt react(like on my C7)???? you will have to wait until battery is completly drained. Big FAIL Nokia, big fail. thank you.

But UI is awesome, probably we will see it on Symbian^3 Belle, and WP7. Can’t wait!

    • Jay Montano says:

Like the Nokia N8 and E7 where the battery is non removable, just hold the power button for 8 seconds or so and it will vibrate and auto power off. You don’t have to wait until the battery is drained.

The N9 documents say this is the method too for powering this off in case of a freeze.

  20. Viipottaja says:

Note the application short-cut/quick launch bar in Terolehto’s video at around 4:30!

  21. Bob says:

My only complaint is the call screen. Do you see that little thumbnail of the person? Otherwise, this looks stellar.

  22. yemi says:

Someone please pinch me when Nokia makes it available to order. Cos I will still be in my dream drooling about this phone in black

  23. goodfellabk718 says:

I really like the vietnamese vid, the guy is really taking the phone through its paces. he’s flicking and interacting with the screens like there’s no tomorrow lol. And the great part about it is that the N9 is keeping up with no problems; even with all those apps open. It really looks like Harmattan is coded well. :-)
