Leaked: Nokia Windows Phone Sea Ray hands on – has hardware buttons!

| July 19, 2011 | 103 Replies

Uh oh. Quick look at YouTube shows some Sea Ray Hands on.

Check out the special secret case (Nokia had one for N900 to hide it)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMhSRyDSlWcHardware buttons lighting up (not touch buttons as once suggested other ‘leaked’ pic)

Here’s the buttons with the light off.

Makes you wonder, if it has hardware buttons, is the screen resolution 800×480 again? (not 854×480)

erm

Not for resale

Mango

To me it doesn’t look like something i would “roam and dance about”.

  2. nfbsk says:

Well I guess “swipe” was good for nothing. Another generic windows phone. Yipee.

    • Harangue says:

It has been stated a couple of times that Nokia influences will only be seen in the next iteration of WP. Mango was too far in development for Nokia to have any substantial influence on it.

  3. Dan McGuire says:

Sounds and looks like the manufacturing workshop for the phone. Make’s me wonder how long this phone will take to release since we had a 3DS manufacturing line console leaked just a few weeks before it’s Japan launch.
Still the N9 is far better than this phone :)

  5. Adnan says:

I believe camera shutter key is the only addition on hardware front. Essentially an N9 running mango

    • Fanel says:

Camera shutter key + front hardware buttons – front-facing camera seems like to me. If I were to choose between this and the N9, I’d still pick the N9.

      • Anastasios-Antonios Toulkeridis says:

A dedicated camera hardware button is a huge plus. I love how easy it is to take photos on my Omnia7

    • Jay Montano says:

And hardware buttons (and FFCam) – which may or may not affect display resolution, thus possibly having a different screen.

Otherwise, yes, it looks like N9. On pure aesthetics though, because it’s WP inside, it obviously looks uglier (when off). -_-

Have to admit, colourful grid and multitasking panels look nicer on MeeGo-Harmattan than swampy orange tiles.

      • Zahed says:

Will it have a reset button like all WinMob seem to need….?

        • Jay Montano says:

          lol, Dunno.

Never had such crashing problems (freezing/lag) on my WP handset. Maybe if ever, it could work like N8 where I long press power button to release it from any freezing. It may happen with unofficial mango (not tried yet)

      • Just Visiting says:

Jay says…”Have to admit, colourful grid and multitasking panels look nicer on MeeGo-Harmattan than swampy orange tiles.”

Folks, the singular tile color that you see on the start screen is the default, out of the box, color…The start screen can look anyway you want depending on what you decide to pin to your start and where you place the tile as the actual apps that you pin to the start screen have colors/graphics that cannot be set by the user.

Come on, you all know this! There are too many demo’s out there by the tech sites (Engadget, Mobileburn, etc.) that show how the WP start screen can look when you, as the user, set the screen according to how you want it. The start screen is dynamic once you arrange the tiles.

my only reaction to this was ‘meh’

  7. Jay Montano says:

Anyone understand what was being murmured in the video?

    • fledge says:

Sounds like it is another language to me.

    • ssdh says:

      a random comment from engadget…

“is it me or are they torturing their workers in the background. someone gets shot for taking this footage. ”

sound like they’re shooting down lazy workers…

Anyway, how was this guy even able to leak a footage from the factory??

  8. fledge says:

    Oh dear.

I hope this will differentiate in some way, shape or form from other WP7 handsets, otherwise all it will produce is a resounding sigh.

    • Jay Montano says:

What? Since the last time it was leaked and looked the same? Or software wise with some Nokia touches? The latter I was hoping something there. Perhaps it’s part of the Nokia Stamp that didn’t make it in this batch.

Hopefully as mentioned from Nokia, this is just ONE of a family of devices to be launched. The others might offer something extra in the camera department.

      • fledge says:

Sorry – I did mean to say software-wise. Exactly your second point there.

I’m talking exciting (not necessarily revolutionary), Nokia-delivered contributions to WP7 OS/UI. This could be exclusive to their handsets or not (I think I recall an artcle on here saying that they may not be). Something that makes it differ positively from a Samsung/HTC device.

There’s plenty of ways Nokia will contribute to bringing something new to WP7 with this device, even if it is not the Nokia Stamp’d model. Hardware/manufacturing obviously – but the similarity to the N9 makes it seem like an old development when the time comes for its release(despite similarly old planned leaks from Elop during the “everyone turn off your cameras” meeting).

What I’d like is Nokia’s unique aspects to shine through hardware and software (in my opinion, they’ve never been the strongest with services, i.e. store). Maybe in a similar style to what HTC does with Android – Sense.

I think this is what is expected of Nokia’s WP7 device and my earlier comment suggests that it’d be a let down if it is anything but that.

Very difficult to tell from the video of course, so I may be shut up very quickly when we learn of special things that are currently unseen. I just hope that they’re out there.

        • Just Visiting says:

Agree with you to a degree. But if you are looking for a Nokia ‘skin’ on the UI, forget about it! The Metro UI is the differentiator.

Some of the comments that I’ve read on other sites is “it looks like every other WP device”. Well, of course it does because the Metro UI is the UI – it will not be changed! People are so used to seeing the Android devices ‘look different’ because of the skin that the oem puts on it…this is the only visual differentiator (UI-wise) the oems can do with Android.

With WP, each oem gets a hub – basically it is their skin compacted into a hub and the user can get those specific services/apps if they choose to keep the hub, or they can completely remove it.

My point is, because so many are used to seeing something different with the UI on Android devices, they are expecting the same with WP. WP oems accept that the Metro UI is THE UI and they will not be allowed to change it. Nokia doesn’t have to ‘skin’ WP, despite what some may think or want; Nokia’s brand, really, is enough of a differentiator, but Nokia’s tech and services are certainly the stand outs amongst them all.

  9. Rudeboi says:

The Nokia windows phone will do well with the cool apps that marketplace has. Better games and couple with ovi maps is a sure hit. I’m not a windows fan or too eager for all those apps but it is what it is a Nokia windows phone will bring them back to the states market.

    • EmmanuelM says:

Yeap the probleme is that the first WP/Mango phone will be introduced in Europe and not in the states…

Europe is one of the place in the world where people don’t like the Microsoft dominance on the PC market… So do not expect a warm welcome to the WP/Mango phones…

Just an example : less than 50 % Internet users are using Internet Explorer

      • Harangue says:

Internet browser usage is no indicator at all. With most people still using XP IE9 isn’t available to them and frankly IE has sucked up until version 8. Version 9 is finaly something worthwile apparantly, haven’t tried it myself.

Assumptions that people don’t like MS and therefor won’t buy an MS OS phone is pointless. There are a lot of people that don’t like Google because of the ‘evil’ aspect in it, yet Android is being bought by busloads at a time.

        • larryg968 says:

I disagree, people have shown that whenever they have a choice they do not use microsoft products. I think this is y microsoft’s market share has been declining in almost every sector. Examples are bing, IE and everyting they touch.

The only sector they have moved into in which they are successful is game consoles and that bcuz they r competing with Sony and nintendo.

Google’s brand aura is far great than microsoft. Do u tink if microsoft launched a facebook competitor anyone would join it. Maybe a few hundred people. People choose to use google search. They are forced to use windows bcuz of network effects.

Google makes great products, microsoft make subpar products most times

  10. Calvin H says:

It looks exactly like every other WP7 phone, all of which I have no intent to buy.

The N9 WITH MEEGO looks amazing, this sucks.

  11. Shiamal Harkison says:

Rather… Um.. Ordinary to me..oh well I’m just glad it seems ready! I just hope theirs a dual core in their, just to make some ppl happy even if it won’t make a massive speed difference!

  12. N9 ecosystem says:

Oh nokia windows phone! Please release it with n9

cant wait to see their sale performance!

If i want ecosystem, i still want ios, why would i wait for wp7 to succeed?
if i want powerful os, i want meego, nothing can beat its multitasking and ui and web browser
if i want pretty and easy ui, i want meego, new experience
if i want nokia phone, i want phone running meego

  13. Mazze says:

Lesson learnt: WP 7 looks ugly, even on a Nokia phone.

  14. Keist says:

Ugly. Even Belle looks nicer. Who will buy this? I’m sure I’m not.

  15. Adnan says:

N9 hardware was meant for full touch based OS with gesture based UI. WP7 although a good OS will ruin it. Nokia has slapped mango on N9. Still if marketed effectively it can be a hit

  16. Hooryder says:

lol that will never work in the US,lol. Look at all those stupid boxes that lead to a bunch of little stupid boxes.

Who came up with that UI?

Why not call it window squared?

This is the crap that Nokia went with, OMG now that’s silly.

    • Jay Montano says:

I agree tiles need more work. Tiles in Mango at least work slightly better (actually being LIVE)

Fortunately the rest of the UI does not revolve around tiles. Just like the rest of Symbian does not revolve around locked down widgets.

  17. stylinred says:

I feel bad that they’re using the same body as the N9 what a disgrace to the N9 ;)

  18. Grumman says:

Are you sure it has hardware buttons they seem to me as capacitive

    • Jay Montano says:

Sorry, what I meant by hardware button is something that’s not a touch screen button (there was a picture a while back that suggested the extra 54 pixels on the screen would act as Windows Phone buttons). This is effectively a ‘real’ physical ‘button’, though I get how this would be understood as one you physically push. Hmmm.

  19. Huka says:

    erm=Q=Qualcomm

    • Jay Montano says:

But why is it there? I’ve never seen that pop up on other WP devices before.

I wanted to see Nokia hands thingy, but even that’s not on the N9.

      • Harangue says:

It’s not out of the ordinary to have different startup screens on in development phones.

I’ve seen it a couple more times with other leaked handsets by different manufacturers.

  20. dfs says:

This phone is already boring. It looks like HTC Trophy/HD7, Samsung Omnia 7, LG Optimus 7… nothing new. boring.

  21. NokiaC7User says:

If nokia can hoodwink everyone by hiding N9 pretty close to the release, then there is definately some surprises lined up in WP handset from nokia. don’t get fooled by these random leaks.

Nokia has bet big on the WP platform now. there is no way the new phone is going to be copy of N9. mostly it just being used up for prototype phase and not final

  22. #@! says:

why I can’t hear nokia tunes when it shart?Elop what did you do?killed that, the nokia tunes?

  23. Zahed says:

Nokia, this could be another fail on epic proportions :(
    Stick with Meego and Symbian.

  24. aikon171 says:

I hope the processor is MSM8255 or better than MSM8255
