Leaked: Nokia Windows Phone Sea Ray hands on – has hardware buttons!

| July 19, 2011 | 103 Replies

Uh oh. Quick look at YouTube shows some Sea Ray Hands on.

Check out the special secret case (Nokia had one for N900 to hide it)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMhSRyDSlWcHardware buttons lighting up (not touch buttons as once suggested other ‘leaked’ pic)

Here’s the buttons with the light off.

Makes you wonder, if it has hardware buttons, is the screen resolution 800×480 again? (not 854×480)

erm

Not for resale

Mango

N9 with MeeGo is way better and looks more alive. I wish they had added the hardware camera button to it.

    WF7 totally ruins the phone.

    The front hardware buttons… meh
The black OS, with huge text… meh
    Squares everywhere… meh
Wasted space on the right… meh

I like how WF7 is called “minimalistic”, it’s absolutely not minimalistic, it’s very wasteful and very badly designed… or did they mean minimalistic in features? Then I agree.

Nokia are fools for dumping MeeGo and going with WF7, talk about snatching defeat out of victory’s mouth.

Finally had Belle, MeeGo, unified UI, Qt… and they threw it all away.

People don’t like WF7, Mango isn’t going to change that, if people liked WF7, the phones would’ve sold… there are some nice ones out already, if you put iOS into those they’d sell like hot cakes.

Nokia in a desperate search for the US market will betray their own loyal fans and lose their home ground, they are already losing.

Hopefully when WF7 bombs, they’ll go back to MeeGo.

    • Ninja says:

      This man speaks the truth!

    • EmmanuelM says:

      Agree with you …

I would just add switch to Meego or Android…

    • Johnny Tremaine says:

Most likely, if WP7 bombs, then Nokia is finished as an independent company.

That’s the hard truth and their current situation, whether you prefer Meego, Windows Phone or Symbian.

Ironically, for all the Elop criticizers, it was the previous CEO, Kallusvuo, who led Nokia to the brink of ruin, staring into the abyss.

      • yasu says:

Ah, that’s my cue. OPK had his faults and got fired. However, when he left Nokia’s Handset and Services division were bringing $4 billion yearly. The stock price was recovering, Qt that he brought in was starting to bear fruit for Nokia’s platform. ASP was recovering. The stock price was trending up. Sales were increasing. Ovi Store downloads were picking up. All that up to Q1 2011. And OPK didn’t have questionable loyalties.

Then Steven Elop, not OPK, decided to stab Nokia’s main money maker. Steven Elop, not OPK decided to bet the farm on an OS that struggles to sell 2 million in a quarter. Steven Elop, not OPK, talk down the N9, saying that even if it was a success, the road was WP7. Steven Elop, not OPK, stated that Plan B was to make Plan A work and as you can see, took measures for that situation to be created. Steven Elop, not OPK went on and on about WP7 this, Microsoft that.

Since a random Friday of February when Steven Elop, not OPK, proclaimed that WP7 was the way to go:

        - Market cap is cut in half
        - Debt rating one step above junk
        - Credit rating down the drain too
        - For the first time in over a decade, the handset division may not make a profit ($4 billion yearly in 2009 and 2010, $1 billion in Q1 2011)
        - The so called Nokia CEO is so on top of the situation that he isn’t able to provide guidance.

So yes, the blame goes right at Mr “There Should Be Accountability in Management or Failure Is A Failure Of Leadership”‘s feet.

      • ssdh says:

Yeah, but OPKs fault was that innovation in the company’s products was slowed down significantly due to an extremely complex bureaucratic system where everything has to be processed and passed to a higher management level, then to another higher management level, thus slowing down the development, until the deadline comes, and what comes out of development is a half baked product, uninspiring and behind the latest technology, making Nokia unable to react fast enough to the threats from Apple and Google… It was mostly a management problem, however we still don’t know if the situation now has changed in Elop’s time (however I read somewhere that a bunch of vice presidents were fired or something, although that info needs some verification).

At least OPK was a more invested in meego than Elop (the N9 being dubbed by engadget as “Elop’s miscarriage” .. . Nice Elop, killing something before it even hits the market, what kind of CEO does that?? Not even a controlled leak of the N9, well sure he pulled the n9 out of his pocket in one of his interviews, but that was just like 1 second, and leaks of the N9 was released something like hours before the official announcement on June 21, but now Sea Ray had a bunch of controlled leaks just to keep the interest going, not just a one second sneak peek, he even demoed it in front of a lot of people carrying video cameras..)

    • insectskin says:

Well part its true. Since its only few languages, Marketplace dont work for everyone… with Mango things are gona change.
That was a problem indeed not the ones you pointed out.. The WP7 UI is way better than Android or iOS.

But one of the biggest problem was its stupid and lame hardware. Lets see it now with better hardware.

And with Mango. I have no doubts WP7 sales will grow a lot ;) .

    • s.s says:

      + 10000

      you nailed it

    • Deep space Bar says:

:D WP7 doesn’t look special after looking at Meego plus Meego is only on the N9 and N950 but N9 for masses so it’s only one device which makes it really stand out from the crowd

    • Caleb says:

      +1 to that buddy!!!

  2. Ninja says:

Looks horrible, especially with that crappy win pho interface.

And Jay i wish you’d stop claiming the lovely N9 hardware for your beloved win pho – they’re NOT the same at all and N9 is far better.

    • Jay Montano says:

I’m sorry Ninja. I guess that’s my fault making Sea Ray look like the N9 because of course, I’m a winpho fanboy. I totally went to Nokia house, stole a N9, put buttons on it, moved the LED, put a camera button and installed Windows Phone.

      • zonk0r says:

yeah, it’s a bit silly to claim one is better than the other. one is a leak and the other isn’t on general release yet :S

personally i found myself a nice 12 month contract with an SGS2 as i’m done with waiting.

Although im sure the N9/Sea Ray will get a lot of lvoe and updates, i will prefer to see what happens with a sequel to these 2 next year. Not a big fan of early adopting nokia products – purely from past experiences. Plus I wanted to give another platform a go for a while!

I’m sure i’ll keep poking my nose in here though

      • Ninja says:

Alright, don’t get your knickers in a twist :)

My point was, you and I don’t know the specs of the WP device yet, so none of us should be claiming “it’s an N9 with Mango on”.

For the record, Sea Ray is NOT “an N9 with Mango on”. Hardware wise it could be vastly inferior, superior or exactly the same.

Saying SeaRay is “N9 with Mango on” is just desperately trying to give Sea Ray some of the the glory and praise that the N9 is getting, hoping it will rub off on Sea Ray.

Sea Ray is it’s own beast, and will live or die by it’s own merits.

And this is my point. If Nokia’s WP devices are crap, they should be crucified, Elop fired, and Symbian and MeeGo brought back to the fore. If they are wonderful and brilliant and Mango is a huge success then me and all the others that said WP is complete crap and Nokia is going to fail with WP phones, should change our minds and accept (if not support) it.

        • zonk0r says:

what would you define as crap?

You already know the OS works.

and you pretty much know what specs will be given the new min specs announced for Mango and Mr Elops pledge to use a Qualcomm chipset (any bets it’s the same as xperia Arc? – I’d pretty much guarantee it)

          • Don says:

WP7 only supports a single chipset, which has nothing in common with what’s used in the N9, so “pledging to use” is like promising to buy a Ford in any color, which happens to be black :)

        • Jay Montano says:

          1) N9 was not mentioned in this post

          2) For conciseness, that’s essentially what this is to everyone. A Nokia N9 with Windows Phone Mango. It looks about 95% the same. Regardless of the differences inside to majority of folks, the only difference is one has Windows Phone, other has MeeGo.

          • Hypnopottamus says:

“1) N9 was not mentioned in this post”

But that’s what the problem was. You didn’t mention anything about the N9 and how vastly superior it is to anything else. You also mentioned a WP7 device, which automatically hurts Ninja’s feelings. Any mention of WP7 automatically makes you a desperate fanboy trying to make WP7 out more than it is.

      • hackman says:

        lol.. nice one :P

  3. EmmanuelM says:

All those orange boxes on the screen… Arrrggg it makes me throw up…

  4. Robb says:

The q i qualcom and the boot screen is just the default that oems get…. So this device has not the software configurations and tweaks yet, that will be unique to nokias wp7 phones… Interesting to see what they do!

  5. Terro says:

It will be interesting to see what CPU is Nokia going to use in these Windows phones. Will it be standard Qualcomm 1GHz processor? 1.5GHz or Dual core is needed if Nokia is trying to get premium price for these phones in christmass 2011 or early 2012.

    • Peter says:

To say that Dual core is _needed_ when talking about cell phones is absurd.

      • Terro says:

It is not needed in performance point of view, but when competitors are selling similar phones with better hardware it is mandatory for Nokia also if they want to sell any phones.

  6. brainimpact says:

hmmno front facing camera, hope its not the final design b/c if it is no skype video

  7. Johnny Tremaine says:

Yeah, I noticed the lack of a front facing cam too.

Imagine: Microsoft buys Skype and supports video chat on Android and iOS…..but not on their own phones?

    So typically Microsoft-ian.

    Still, the device looks nice.

It’s too bad that it’ll never see the light of day in the U.S. though.

  8. meh says:

Mango is here sooner than everybody might think? Maybe Nokia windows phone too?

    Personally I want N9 :)

  9. Usedtolovemeegoandnokia says:

    Disgusting OS.

  10. ssdh says:

    EEwww… Looks lame..
    What a waste…

Anyway, will they be releasing this in white?? You know, just like what we saw last time in that vid about the N9 design…?!?!?

  11. ssdh says:

I bet the next thing Elop would do during Nokia WP7′s launch is to scream

DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS DEVELOPERS
    http://enterprisegeeks.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/ballmer_developers_2.jpg

  12. mprince says:

curious to know..if the ‘nokia stamp’ is not going to be on the Sea Ray when it’s released, will it ever get the nokia stamp (be it nokia maps, etc) via next firmware upgrade after mango? and would it just be for the next batch of nokia wp7 devices that gets the nokia stamp?

    • ssdh says:

That stamp they keep talking about better not be the “swipe from the edge” gesture… It’s one of the things that makes the N9 very special and sets it apart from the others….
Considering they’re using the same screen and externals (except for the camera button), I bet the screen edges are also touch sensitive on this so called Sea Ray…

Providing it with excellent maps is enough… No more.. not the swipe, not the grid multitasking… The maps is more than enough.. They even gave this one a hardware button (and probably a more powerful processor.. Qualcomm??)

  13. Ookami says:

Am I the only one that appreciates the minimalism in WP7? I think it is simply beautiful and fits perfectly into one of my favorite quotes; “a designer knows he has achieved perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.”

I really hope that MS will take the same approach on future Windows Desktop versions.

And I think this video does WP7 more justice than the Nokia video :P
    http://www.microsoft.com/ja-jp/windowsphone/default.aspx

    • John says:

Nope you are not the only one, I for one also appreciate the minimalism WP7 has, I like the fact Microsoft are not mimicking things that it clearly isn’t such as making buttons look like buttons on a touch screen which is absurd.

People often get turned off by something that looks completely different or something they have never experienced before. Usually people like to go for things that they can relate to and Windows phone clearly doesn’t thats why people often say Wp7 looks ugly not because it is because they are not familiar with it they are more familier with the style of Android, Symbian or MeeGo.

  14. Hypnopottamus says:

I like the minimalism also. I’m not totally sold on the OS yet, though. I’m going to wait for reviews to come out after release. Same holds true with MeeGo. Love the way it looks, but want to make sure everything works the way it should (especially email, browser, and Social Network).

  15. Diogo says:

Symbian S60v5 has better UI than wp7.
Its very ugly! Nokia + MS = Fail!

  16. Janimatik says:

Sea Ray is W7 and the price segment will be similar than with C7 -> approx. 300 euros.

“In one words – W7, W8 will be the first Nokia WP7 phones :) W7 like HTC Mozart, W8 – N8 variant (chipset TBD)” by Murtazin

“The W7 model is currently being used in-house for development purposes and will likely be the first to market, according to Eldar, with an 8 megapixel autofocus camera and flash. Murtazin claims that the W7 reminded him of the HTC Mozart without any noticeable customizations to the OS.” by Engadget

    http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/14/nokia-w7-and-w8-tipped-as-first-windows-phone-models/

Dunno if informations are reliable. Yesterday I watch the finnish news and Eldar Murtazin felt really bitter and also a bit weird. Also according to some mobile forums that I’m following he seems to be loosing he’s credibility…

But if we do believe then some specs at Sea Ray points to W7 -> 8mpix camera with Led-flash, lack of front facing camera (you couldn’t leave that out with flagship W9). Does it look like HTC Mozart? Well maybe a little bit.

The most important thing for MS and Nokia is to raise the market share of WP7 and easiest way to do it is in mid-range segment, W7.

Would you buy this phone with 300 euros? I think I would.

  17. John says:

Clearly this device is close to being unveiled, which is frankly good to see, because all this Wp7 is crap and MeeGo rules nonsense is boring and plain childish. I just want to see the two device (SeaRay and N9) being launched and the market to decide.

I feel like the quality of comments has gone way down since the 11 Feb announcement, which is a shame since people are a lot smarter than Wp7 is crap or Elop is a trojan horse.

  18. Blackidea says:

    Totally crap!
I want Belle’s leak not this

  19. SAPNA says:

hey guys pls help tell me which nokia phone should i go for? or should i buy some other company phone my basic requirement in a phone is that it should have good spped for net surfing a bit of big screen like nokia e7 with keypad as i’m not very comfortable with touch screen
