Nokia N9 in extreme demand, “Pre-orders through the roof”.

| September 17, 2011 | 135 Replies

Apparently, according to Nokia Conv-Suomi, the line for the N9 at the Helsinki Nokia store was stretching far out into the street. GSM Arena titled their reaction to this as “N9 pre-orders through the roof”

Nok Conversations say that all the 64GB Nokia N9s are already reserved. It would be interesting to know exactly the volume of such stock in question.

Black is the most popular colour asked for.

i think guys it wud be better if we wud have known the exact no of pre-orders.

    • Rich says:

      exactly.
I really want the n9 to be nokias fastest/biggest selling handset but without knowing the numbers pre-ordered kinda makes the story a bit pointless?
when Nok Conversations say that all the 64GB Nokia N9s are already reserved, does this mean the first batch or the only batch nokia is running have all been sold? only making 100 and saying they’ve all been sold won’t be too clever for example!!!

  2. realtechie.. says:

buy the way the rating has jumped off vigorously nokia 701 on gsm arena it’s 8.633

  3. realtechie.. says:

the ratings on gsm arena of nokia 701 is 8.7 now it will soon fire sgs2.

  4. meego says:

And what has Elop done? I think Elop should either back N9 full scale or never even have it released.

The guy is a total mess. Can’t really understand this guy. Why release N9 if you aren’t going to back it? Why not just go with the MS phone plan wholesale?

    • dr_zorg says:

I think there is quite some pressure from perhaps the bigger shareholders and other execs within Nokia.

Elop is a trojan, but he has to step carefully so as not to admit it full scale. So far he can always pull out the “sorry it was a mistake and bad judgement” card. If he completely scales down Nokia’s own production this will generate a big wave of discontent and hate within the company itself. And this he (or Ballmer) is not prepared to face just yet.

Nevertheless, his intentions and actions are toward one goal: to push Ballmer’s tool as far up Nokia’s anus as it will go.

    • Patric Sweden says:

What I have heard from Nokia Sweden, it’s just a gimmick, they told me that they’re making new MeeGo mobiles and tablets from Tabaco, so they will not terminate MeeGo

      • Shamus says:

Tabco was a viral marketing campaign run by the makers of the joojoo tablet.
It turned out to have nothing to do with Nokia. Do you not follow the news?

    • gadgety says:

Elop is likely releasing the N9 due to
      1. Contractual obligations with Intel.
      2. Recapturing sunk cost

  5. ddjddj says:

nokia n9 and nokia windows phone fight!!!

    n9 has wow factor”SWIPE”
N9 design is the first to show the world

meego community need to work more harder to ensure sale of n9 is far much better than wp7!!!

  6. John says:

Of course there is going to be demand for the N9 when was the last time we had a high end Nokia device ??? its been ages.

I can remember there was similar demand from people about the Nokia N8, because the previous device was the lousy N97.

So yeah expect demand. But this unfortunately doesn’t prove anything.

Now lets talk about the conspiracy theorists about Elop.

First of all if Elop REALLY wanted to kill why bother showing it to the world and then killing it ? It makes far more sense not to show it to the world at all and kill it quietly in the R&D department.

Secondly if Nokia really wanted to continue with MeeGo they would have NEVER hired Elop, they would have gone with Ansi and continued MeeGo.

The Nokia board obviously had no confidence for a reason we have no idea about, i mean they should know better because they are developing it.

Elop was brought in to change Nokia strategy so I don’t blame Elop with going with Windows Phone, because he wasn’t part when this whole MeeGo thing started.

I wouldn’t say Elop is killing the N9 I would say Elop isn’t interested in MeeGo because he was brought in to lead a different strategy in this case Windows Phone, and to be honest I don’t blame him.

I mean as a CEO why would anyone lead a strategy you where not part off from the beginning ?

To be honest I just want Nokia to succeed whatever OS they choose.

I am getting tired of all this talk which device will sell more I just want them to come out so we can stop all the speculation.

    • Mathias says:

Elop comforters need to get a room.

People want good phones, they don’t want Nokia phones anymore. Apple and Android has fans, Nokia not quite as many. The american distate for Nokia is slowly spreading into Europe too. Nokia NEED to harvest any popularity they could.

N8 sold ~4 million in a short time in extremely cold media climate; N8 was mocked and respectable places showed twisted images of its camera to make its strongest selling point look as “not good” as they could. N8 sold 4 million even before the price cut.

“First of all if Elop REALLY wanted to kill why bother showing it to the world and then killing it ? It makes far more sense not to show it to the world at all and kill it quietly in the R&D department.”

Put it another way around; what did Elop do for Nokias investors? Elops biggest achievement is building MS owned ecosystem, which shows in stock market MS stocks rise while Nokia plummets. Its not the imaginary “conspiracy theorists” who have to prove them selves, Its Elop, who need to…do something, anything.

N9 was successor of N900, so it couldn’t possibly be threat to Elops scheme. He could just act like it was nothing big and pretentiously withdraw it from every meaningful market area and trust that people wouldn’t buy it, because only so few units are manufactured, that its cost would stop it going outside of geek -market. Also he couldn’t just throw it into garbage, because people know it internally; a CEO cannot throw big investment into garbage bin and put the whole company into other company’s leach.

Symbian is not small, and has only just recently started to recover from N97 fiasco. S60v5 bad(or the handsets was too thin on hardware), Symbian good. Qt was a big investment and combined with Meego it was a fucking big investment that, was well known among investors as well as customers.

I would have chosen WP7 too, but I would NOT have killed Symbian and Meego like Elop. Thats just what MS -dude, what Elop is, would do, aim for MS monopoly. I would have used WP7 to get a little sympathy from USA, but still have built my own thing too!!! Why would you put everything in WP7 basket? There’s nothing wrong in Symbian, except its bad reputation, and that’s slowly repairing it self. Recovering Symbian * Qt * Meego is a strong ecosystem, there’s no reason to not continue to build it. How much money does Apple get from phone software business? Thats something you don’t want to give up to MS.

      • James says:

        +1
        I don’t get these “WP only” apologists….
WP is fine, but killing-off everything else (esp. symbian’s ultimate successor) was not cool.
And I’m yet to see a truly compelling argument from management (that hasn’t been shot down) as to why it “really, really” had to happen.

    • dirtymoon says:

“there was a damand for n8 because the previous device was n97″

are you having a laugh. the n900 came before n8 but nokia cocked up the marketing of that one. i’ve recently owned an n8 and flogged it to go back to n900 because it was crap. for many nokia fans the n9 is the last chance to get a nokia and if they can’t get one they’ll go elsewhere

      • Harangue says:

I’m hard pressed to call the N900 a mass market device like the N97 and N8. While the N97 was bug ridden the N900 wasn’t the gem some make it out to be either.

One major hurdle was that it was just chunky, really chunky for a phone released in ’09. Spec wise it was ok, but it lacked some things like maps and general support as far as I read/know.

Since when is the N9 the last chance to get a Nokia? Weird statement, since Nokia still puts out many Windows Phone less devices in the future. A S40 device is still a Nokia right?

        • dirtymoon says:

but the n900 was the only release with an OS with potential. if nokia hadn’t lost sight Maemo would have been put into phones of other shapes and sizes and been twice the phone the N8 was. And you’re wrong that the N900 wasn’t what it was made out to be. In 2 years no Symbian phone has matched it and the myths of it being hard to use was bull. That’s why you’re wrong to exclude it from Nokia list of high-end phones. It’s not like the n97 turned out to be mass market either

  7. jbk1971 says:

This CEO thinks he can manipulate me and other people to buy a phone with windows. I know perfectly strategy to do marketing. You make awesome symbian and meego phone , to attract consumers on an innovation of nokia that you will sell in small quantities and very expensive, just so people think that Nokia hardware is fantastic and we should give him a chance with another OS like windows mango. If you think you take us for idiots, in my case I will make all your projects are a failure and you are fired from Nokia.

    • John says:

Hahaha Elop isnt forcing you to buy a Windows Phone if you don’t like it don’t buy it.

      • me says:

Sure he’s trying. If you want Nokia quality – that is, quality design, camera, speakers, connectivity and display, you’ve historically had few options. And in the near future most of the options are offered with Windows Phone. No thanks.

Lucky for us (who do not care about Windows Phone that much – or at all) Samsung’s been getting there, big time with SGSII. What’s especially bad for Nokia is that ‘we’ are many (see Windows Phone sales performance, there’re no excuses).

  8. hgjghdfdfgdtsgd says:

I hope N9 will sell much better then WP7 and then Nokia will see what people want.

  9. Ole says:

Elop do not deer to market N9 in the big phone markets because it is obviously going to be a success and by succeeding proving that the decision to put all the eggs in the WP basket was wrong. He is covering his ass and running MicroSofts errand.

  10. ddjddj says:

why noone are going to kill elop? he is a disgrace to nokia history!

    • Just Visiting says:

@ddjddj…Seriously? You want someone to kill Elop?

It is these types of comments, and the users that make them, that should be banned from this site!

      • yabai.youth says:

I know eh? It’s especially baffling when essential, this man wants Elop dead over a mobile phone. In his eyes, it’s as if Nokia is not a company anymore, but rather a cult or a religion.

        • dr_zorg says:

I think the hate is justified to a certain extent. People such as Elop must understand that they have a responsibility before the public. So far Elop has not acted responsibly.

I would not kill him, but I would certainly put him to jail for some 20 years. Maybe that could give a heads up to others like him.

          • Harangue says:

Saying killing is going to far, yet 20 years jailtime does seem right?

How did Elop act against the law and thus justifying jailtime? Unless corporate structure inside Nokia is illegal there is little chance that Elop could handle against the law.

There are corporations that handle more evil than what Elop can ever do (unless Nokia would go belly up next year perhaps) just look at BP with Tony Hayward. Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster mean anything?

Or airlines that do some cost cutting and in result create the death of many in an air crash? Or building contracters that cut corners and thus creating hazardous weaknesses in buildings putting lives at danger with that.

Those are things that would require jailtime, not what Elop did/does regardless of whether you hate him or not.

    • outdated os says:

didn’t it occur to the two of you that it might be a figure of speech?

    • Bob says:

You do realise that Elop has approved the release of the N9 and Meego is still actively funded . . .

  11. Jalapenio says:

damn… hope it doesn’t affect the price in my locale. and I hope we still get units.

  12. hosny says:

scuse me but what meand IMHO and polish when you in your comments

  13. Shmerl says:

Microsoft must be furious about it. I bet they force Nokia to reduce N9 production.

    • Simo says:

Wouldn’t surprise me. Let’s face it, a good chunk of the N9′s sales are going to come as a result of the hardware’s design. Microsoft and Nokia could see that as Windows Phone sales lost since the design won’t be out running WP7 until later. I really think that’s the main driving force behind how delayed the N9′s release is.

      • abcs says:

The official reason, in South East Asia that is, for the delay is they’re shipping the 64 GB magenta & cyan. Originally, only black is available for 64 GB

        • Simo says:

If that’s the reason they’re really going with then I think you’ll agree with me in saying “BULL SHIT.” :D

It’ll be interesting to see what new information, if any, is revealed at tomorrow night’s N9 launch in Dubai.

  14. dontom says:

I just noticed that on the first page of the Finnish promopage (where you can win a N9 every day) they have a page called ‘How do I make it mine’ and when you go there it says ‘Releasedate October 1:st’!!
So, at least in Finland, we will see it soon!
Only thing I’m a little suspicious about is the fact that october 1st is a saturday, not a normal releasedate, as far as I rememember…
    Well, we’ll know soon enough!

  15. Bob says:

Elop blah blah blah . .. . Windows Phone blah blah blah

    Yawn

Both phones can be succesfull – I wish them both well for Nokia

  16. Raja says:

Nokia n9 is a amazing gadget no doubt about it and people also need to know why Elop is not supporting meego and symbian. Symbian no matter how much you like it is nearly no were close to iOS and android and symbian was losing market share already even before nokia appointed Elop as a CEO . Infact Elop was the one who was betting for meego ,but he was given a big shock of life from the head of meego team that by 2014 nokia can only produce maximum 3 -4handsets which by all means nokia juxt can’t sustain. Elop made meetings with google first for using Android and google simply refused to give any special treatment to nokia saying it will be just a another oem like others. Only Microsoft agreed after hard bargain that they will give exclusive rights to nokia to add their flavor to wp7 something which nokia wanted , and also sone great amount of financial resources . And this deal was not done by Elop . You also need to understand that Elop infact is more liked within nokia as he is more receptive and open , he infact has given hardware team in nokia much more freedom then before. A deal with Microsoft has infact helped nokia to balance itself and focus more on what they do the best hardware. And save huge amount of resources which were going in symbian and meego which was not giving any traction to the company . Just because a lot of people want meego handsets nokia will make them because that is extremely risky for the company . So rather then blaming Elop pls anybody interested in nokia as a company must read one nice article which is free on the internet “Adventures of Stefen Elop in nokia” you will come to know why and what forced him to kill meego and symbian.

    • shamus says:

      LOL…
Believing wholeheartedly in the all the propaganda/FUD I see.
Nokia will be a tiny shell of it’s former self in a few years.

  17. Peter says:

BB is crap since day 1, Symian is number 1 since day 1 that’s the difference. Wall street bankers install BB’s enterprise services to boast RIM’s stock day-in day-out. using its controlled media to spread BB’s addiction. it is not BB addiction, it is wall-street money addiction which distorts everything till Steve Jobs’s Iphone comes to the stage. WS can not cover crap BB for ever. WS reluctantly to switch to apple initially till today it accelerates the process after it boast BB’s stock price to $145. then short sell it to $22.

WS has no love of Steve Jobs nor iPhone but the fiat money it creates from thin air.

It is a pity tomi knows nothing about WS financing. so his mobile analysis can not hit the point most of the time.

Symbian is different. it doesn’t rely on US market so US media propaganda lost its influence on Symbian consumers. without US so called enterprise market, BB is dead. nokia can still keep it as number one mobile phone sellers.

That’s why they hire Steve Elop to kill nokia from inside under the guise of MS trojan horse. He is not MS trjon horse. He is commiting crime from day 1 like he sold macromedia within 3 months after he was promoted as CEO. Steve Elop is professional destroyer of WS hired criminal.

He has no clue about software, marketing, management, execution.

He is much worse than previous management team.

    Now we all know why.

Steven Elop is on US WS short sellers mission to destroy nokia from inside. Because Symbian is different. it doesn’t rely on US market so US media propaganda lost its influence on Symbian consumers.
