ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy ditches his iPhone – more room beyond the world of iThings.
Yesterday, we heard that popular iPhone supporters/users Jon Rettinger and Noah Kravitz ditched their iPhones for a Windows Phone. Doubters did come inbound saying that they were paid. It seems though that with the iPhone 4S looking exactly like the iPhone 4 (though what did you expect, they all look pretty much the same since 2007) prominent iPhone supporters are ditching their iPhones.
It’s probably quite significant then when your name has iPhone in it and you’ve made 600 videos about an iPhone and in your latest video talk about having happily moved to another platform.
Well, that’s just what “ ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy” has done. No it’s not a WP this time, it’s another big screened phone though, the Note.
The guy seems pretty level headed. He says no platform is perfect, each with its strengths and weaknesses. He notes WP’s early days and says Microsoft has done quite a lot in that year to catch up. He does joke about WebOS and MeeGo (he may have said they suck, I’m not listening to the video now but just what I remember from watching it yesterday, but hey, at least they get a mention, and clearly MeeGo-Harmattan does not suck).
We’ll say it again, what’s best is what is best for you. Since we’re all remarkably different what’s best for each of us will of course be different. There’s not one thing that’s perfect for everyone. Yes, that includes Symbian, Maemo, MeeGo, S40 and even Bada. No wait, Bada sucks for everyone. Joke (no not really :p).
I got about half way until I had to go get a train. The video is about 12 minutes long and it seems to have perked up a good discussion. What I like most about it is that other platforms are now getting to the point where folks that seemed to be forever iPhone supporters can look beyond and happily use another OS without regret or wishes to go back. Should WP ever get to the critical apps level, then apps is also going to be another factor that’s not counting against the platform (though as reviewers have mentioned, the important ones are there in the marketplace for them).
I like particularly that it gives some hope that if you can create a good user experience with a fantastic product, then eventually folks will give it a go, like it and can be swayed away from an iPhone (and it’s not once you go iPhone you’re iPhone for life). For most general consumers, I’m betting that the decision to go iPhone is least to do with the phone suiting them but the fact that it’s a household name, it’s the in-thing and it’s what they know. To get around that? Create a good product first and foremost, then with solid foundations you can create your own branding and raise awareness for your product. It’s still just 2011, Nokia’s game is ramping up in 2012.

What a great way to start my day, another post about some random guy GETTING A NEW PHONE! I think this is sooo important and relevant to this blog, especially when he didn’t even get a Nokia phone! I can’t wait to tell my parents how another guy DID NOT GET THE NEWEST IPHONE BUT SOMETHING ELSE!
Seriously, guys, I love your blog but posts like these irritate me greatly. If iPhone’s market share were to decline significantly, that would be newsworthy. Few bloggers telling about their new phones is not.
Did you only read the title? Sounds like it.
Jay, why U NO have “like” button xD
First of all, usually the title and caption should summarize the whole story. On the front page I see the title “ThatSnazzyiPhoneGuy ditches his iPhone – more room beyond the world of iThings.” and caption “Yesterday, we heard that popular iPhone supporters/users Jon Rettinger and Noah Kravitz ditched their iPhones for a Windows Phone.” From here I can conclude that the story is about another guy getting a new phone and it’s completely relevant to criticize the value of the piece of news at hand.
If you as a writer don’t think that the story can be summarized in the title and the caption, you should come up with another title and caption. If you are going to write about a variety of subjects, you should indicate this in these said parts or write two separate stories.
So yes, I read the whole story. It was about a guy getting a new phone. It was also about choosing a phone that fits your personal preferences the best, the chance of iPhone losing the in-factor and possibilities on Nokia’s success in the coming years, among other things. I commented about the first subject. I agreed with the other subjects. Maybe I should have pointed that out, but usually you let the good things slide and concentrate on the bad stuff.
PS. the MyNokiaBlog writing team, I’m not hating here, just giving feedback
Matias your sarcasm is NOT feedback, you comments here are irritating if anything. It seems that you don’t write for a living as Jay and the other writers concentrate on ALL news good or bad related to Nokia and Microsoft.
So, basically, you didn’t read the entire article.
Thank you for your feedback.
1) The caption you see is automatic. I can’t dictate what that will be in the home page because it is a set amount of characters.
2) Knowing everything from title, I think this particular title is already in two parts (the two part which you wanted indicating). a) Quinn, a long term Apple and iPhone fan ditching an iPhone and b) having room for other things beyond iPhones. That’s important for the competition to see that the hold iPhone has is not as permanent as some would have us believe.
“If you as a writer don’t think that the story can be summarized in the title and the caption, you should come up with another title and caption. If you are going to write about a variety of subjects, you should indicate this in these said parts or write two separate stories.”
As mentioned the title and caption does summarise exactly what has happened and what is discussed here. I can accept in other instances I can write better titles to make them clearer. How would you change the title?
As for separating into two articles, well the point was a follow up from the previous post that there is a chance that folks will move away from the iPhone if given a good hardware/software experience. This case, it was with Android (to show that there is movement in many directions and it isn’t just supposedly paid by WP bosses)and an iPhone guy being happy with his Droid experience.
Finally, we can say that Nokia is back in the competition, with the help of Windows Phone! And I hope that Windows Phone Apollo brings all the features that are missing in current gen. of Lumia products and give the Symbian users(including me) a good enough reason to move towards their new OS.
Nokia’s stock price on Friday hit its lowest in the past year. NOK went as low as $4.62. Nokia is not back, it will take miracle for Nokia to be back in the game.
I didn’t say that they are back in the game with a bang…
oh i love ANDROID
Ho, me too…
Symbian had all those functions since 2004 you dick
Including crashing! Symbiots consider that a feature too.
sorry MeeGo, sorry WebOS…what!!!sorry MeeGo!!! tell me one thing that MeeGo cant do but iOS or Android can…
Attract many, many developers. xD
that isn’t fault of MeeGo…but its the fault of management
I’m not saying it’s anybody’s fault. I’m just answering his/her question.
That’s like saying it’s not Symbian’s fault it sucks, it’s how Nokia handled it.
I have yet to meet a programmer who tried Qt (through any programming language it has hooks for) that claims that Qt ain’t great development environment and most of them would prefer it over other platforms if Nokia actually took their initial strategy seriously.
Don’t blame Maemo/MeeGo for the shortcomings of Nokia.
your ability to perform mental gymnastics compartmentalising everything is astounding
There’s not enough room on this page for that.
I’m the guy in the video, and I didn’t mean to convey that MeeGo sucks. In fact, I really, REALLY like MeeGo; however, it simply lacks the proper development attraction and it isn’t backed by a big enough handset manufacturer to make it competitive with the big three.
And webOS sucks now. It didn’t. I was a proud Pixi Plus owner for quite some time and I loved it—that being said, it was destroyed by HP and is now years behind. Even after open-sourcing it, I doubt it will live more than a few months.
i rather switch to ios than wp7
why? same idea, just looks different
I think there’s more than just the looks. For example, iOS is more app centric, WP has many of the most importand functionalities baked in the OS and they can be accessed from multiple places, not just from the said app. I just showed my HTC Titan to my brother and his wife, both dedicated Mac lovers. They were amazed on how much easier to use, visually pleasing and thorough WP is compared to iOS.
Some people don’t want to admit it, but WP took the best of iOS and webOS and merged them. It didn’t stumble on it by accident, it delivered everything deliberately.
I’d rather switch to android than wp7. Android’s more akin to symbian with its customization options. Wp7 for me is too restrictive. To each his own I guess.
you’re right, Android is just as laggy as Symbian, you should feel right at home
Android is like playing a game and you have to get to different levels before you can find what you are looking for. Mango takes you there now or already IS there.
LOL!
In dollar 280 which phone is best for me.i am a big fan of nokia because of its great phons with low cost! But i don’t have credit card for paid apps . Please help me guys!! thanx
if you haven’t already, check if your carriers have carrier billing to avoid the need for a credit card.
as for the phone, depending on your priorities, you should be able to find a Symbian 3 phone around that price point (assuming the price level in your country is similar to europe/the US). perhaps the c6-01 or the C7 even. or a used N8. they will get belle too. later on i gather nokia will have wp phones at price poin too.
well thats a good strategy for windows phone.
they have no chance with nokia fans, used to a feature rich os with good battery life. the will go for n9 or symbian belle devices.
but ios users will miss anything with windows phone.
oh ok, I thought Jay was a Nokia fan!
well he has some original nokias. a n8, a n9 etc..
So, I am confused as per your original statement WP would have no chance with someone like him.
hahaha. nokia users are not used to good battery life. maybe s40 and s30 had good battery life, but symbian had shit battery life.
WP .. microsoft still not able to make a phone OS . WP7.5 also best suited for tablet kind of thing but not for phone . i am a Nokia fan boy i am using nokia/symbian smart phones from 7 years . i tried nokia lumia 800/710 but both are not good. it is not worth of putting so much amount on these phones.one thing is software is still have lot of lags in every part so you can not beat iOS in this section .ios best in many all sections speed, apps, browser, usability even lumia call quality is not good usually nokia call quality is 100% better than any phone.in browser point of view WP scores better than symbian and android except browser symbian is better option and mode worth because you have double music play back time and beautiful camera ,excellent call quality compared to any other mobile
WP has a lot of lags? Really? One thing every single review I’ve seen has said its very fast and smooth, expect for task switching for apps that developer has not optimized for Mango yet.
And can you also elaborate why you think the Symbian browser is better than the WP one?
“in browser point of view WP scores better than symbian and android except browser symbian is better option ”
this is my sentence related to browser .i said WP browser better than symbian and android.
lot of lags while using browser and gallery . especially rotation creating mess .
reviews are covering live tails scrolling only and we all are nokia fans so we are viewing positive reviews only .
another thing is hard to use qwerty in Portrait mode.
do you know how much is html5test score ?it is just 130
Misread you on the browser point.
Have not heard of the lags in WP you mention so thanks for that – of course would be great to hear if other users are experience the same, in particular on Lumias.
Also suprised to hear the comment on the qwerty as seen many reviews that say the WP qwerty is one of the best around.
Please, ignore the trolling. WP slow… you’ve never actually even seen, let alone try a Windows phone, have you? N9 user here.
u are N9 user not a WP
.
i tried WP
yes you sure did….. NOT
lol
I like this article, maybe because when almost everyone usually compare any good thing to iOS blindly than why not knowing that iOS or the iThings are getting hit too repeatedly and non other but their very own people who loved and supported it deeply.
we are going to celebrate new year, nokia is preparing for q4 result, i am exciting how lumia are doing!
please tell me guys wether symbian going to releases few hd games or not because i am going to get a symbian belle device like 701.. Please help me.
I doubt symbian could immediately improve its screen resolution for HD.
AFAIK, there are prototypes in testing with higher resolution. Whether they come out in products in the market is a different matter of course.
Bar a couple of notable exceptions, no smartphone has HD resolution anyway. Not even the measly 720p, let alone 1080p. And to be fair, why would anyone need HD resolution on a <4" screen? Your eyes would not be able to notice the difference between a decent resolution and HD resolution on such a small screen, unless you observe it from 1cm distance and then you'll again meet your imperfect biology as human eyes cannot effectively focus on an object less than 10cm away, so one way or the other HD resolution on a small screen is pointless.
Consequently, there are no HD games for smartphones. It's a marketing buzz that ought to represent exceptional graphics, not the actual resolution. Symbian or no Symbian, that's a plain fact.
The reason for 720p resolution is easier development, particularly for games, which are the most important apps. 1280×720 lets them develop a game for a smartphone, a tablet, a PC or a game console. Developer friendliness is the biggest reason for a 720p screen on a smartphone.
Bloggers are for sale too.
I prefer the N9. Have tried them all and every device has issues at times. MeeGo is just simple to use and quite elegant. I don’t really care for a ecosystem but if I had to choose one it would be Apple. The N9 really draws attention as soon as others see it.
Is this a Nokia blog or “I hate iphone blog”?
I wonder….
This is a ‘ read the whole post before you comment’ blog.
Does the post hate on the iPhone or is it trying to state there are opportunities for Nokia to break the hold of iphone as long as they can make great hardware and software experience, a post of hope for a Nokia fan to show it isn’t just WP and hence just paid by Ballmer, it works for android too.
It was iPhone that broke nokia’s crown so it is iPhone we look now for kinks in armour.
But then if you actually read the post you might know what I was trying to say.
I think they got the price right, a few dollars and he now supports WP, just like in India, where actors twitt that MS WP is the best OS posted from BB phone
Hehe exactly, poor shah rukh, guy stopped using his brains loooong ago.
On another note 30K for the Lumia 800 in India is seriously too expensive for its feature set. Considering a Galaxy SII comes cheaper.
Probably 24K would have been the sweet spot. But hey who am i to tell, Nokia knows better
