Rumours: Nokia Tango for CES/MWC, Nokia Apollo for Nokia Connection (June) as well as Windows 8 tablets

We had a few tips on this yesterday but I didn’t have much to go on other than trusting ‘an industry insider’. That post was later updated to show that the source is someone who works at Nokia. Exactly what, we’re not sure. Could be the cleaner. Joke. Point, take with pinches of salt.

Here’s basically what’s supposedly happening:

  • Nokia’s Tango phones are being announced at CES and MWC.
  • Nokia’s Apollo phones are appearing at Nokia Connection in June.
  • Nokia Windows 8 tablets in June
It is imperative that Nokia execute all their plans flawlessly in 2012. Such a critical year where Nokia MUST deliver. It’s still early in terms of MS’s timescale for WP but next year is when Nokia has to show us what they can do. It’s pretty much the end of the transition years that we’ve been waiting for since 2007. It was supposed to be Symbian touch but that turned out to be a dud, then it was Maemo but that unfortunately had to be delayed as we went on a mystical journey to MeeGo. Whatever happened since then we’re now firmly in Windows Phone. As the OS begins to properly mature, Nokia can fully put their hardware expertise into it. The OS itself has garnered praises from the online reviewers and tech sites, to the point of attracting old, long time iPhone supporters. The Lumia 800′s design has been wowing folks again (i.e. N9) showing just how Nokia can create their own design which is beautiful but isn’t a photocopy of an iPhone (hey Samsung?).
2012 has to be the year where Nokia finally, FINALLY delivers a proper flagship that’s not only a flagship for Nokia but one that other manufacturers would take notice of. It’s been something I’ve been ranting about for so long, and it’s a little strange each time to have expected  this to appear on 3/4 different OSes.
2012 won’t just be for WP of course, it will be interesting to see what Nokia does with S40, Qt, Meltemi, Symbian and all efforts that went into MeeGo and the new distruptions.

Cheers all for the tip.

I believe Nokia might be announcing the n8 successor on windows phone running apollo..

I hope we can follow some live CES stuff, like a feed somehwere, would be nice.

I’m confident they can deliver (although of course Elop won’t say anything until it’s closer to the date). They said 2012 for the first Nokia Windows Phones and they launched a couple for Christmas 2011. So they’re a little bit ahead of schedule. I’d be quite surprised if they’re not able to keep it up.

Qualcomm’s also doing their part to make it very easy, with backwards compatible Snapdragons, allowing for moderately upgraded internal hardware that can be developed and rolled out much quicker, and also makes it easier to roll out software updates.

I just hope the dual core chips end up being easy to implement.

Question is, what they will present at MWC…
I remember that some Nokia manager said they gonna be BIG there…

I hope they don’t start trying to produce a ton of different phones.
Just give us one or two really good ones with all the best stuff.

There is no reason for 20 variants of extremely similar phones.

I’d be happy with a phone with about 4 inch screen size and n8 or better camera (which there is no excuse why isn’t in every smart phone nokia produces). Don’t really care about processor, i’m not trying to hack into the defense the department with my phone.

Nokia, you had better hurry, only getting about 60% a day out of my n900 battery.

Well… I’m all for the competition, if Nokia can deliver something truly special it’ll only make the others work harder.

Interesting what will Microsoft do with Apollo, they better do something incredible with it and try to overtake the others instead of merely playing catchup if they want to be noticed.

    • HD says:

Wow… is that really you :-O

    • TrollKnightRises says:

well catch up game is already on! windows phones will get 1080p recording and dual core cpu in 2012 Q4 with Apollo update….by that time Android will be flying with quad core cpus,720p display, xbox class gaming engine, very advanced camera modules like 16mp with 1080p recording at 60fps and so on…

  8. ivan says:

I hope apollo and windows 8 offer a better display resolution the ones they got now are mediocre ! thats why i have not bought one yet!

  9. Fuzzillogic says:

Windows 8 tablet? Hmm. Given their current heading, I’m afraid this will be a very locked-down piece of hardware, much like the iPad. That would be an instant, unfixable dealbreaker for me.

Also, I’m quite skeptical about the Metro-interface. They are using web-tech as some kind of on-fits-all holy grail, while in my opinion current web-tech (especially javascript) is a very mediocre platform.

I’d be much, MUCH more interested in a Meego / Harmattan tablet.

  10. Vzuser says:

When are Nokia windows phone coming to Verizon ?
Looks like in USA, they are working for only ATT and T-mobile markets.
That leaves them out of Verizon and Sprint users market totally.

With unlimited data plan gone, all the old customers will not be changing their service providers any time soon as they can only grandfather these unlimited data-plans.

Hope some PM in Nokia reads and reply back.
