PR1.2 Nokia N9 update screenshots and changelog. App folders, video call and much more!

| January 11, 2012 | 79 Replies

It was late November when we last saw some PR1.2 screenshots. Here are some more! I think they got the firmware update from Navifirm? (which some folks have said has some new N8 updates? I’ve not looked into that as I’m supposed to be revising and don’t have time to check around. I really shouldn’t be writing this up, ha). The screenshots come from tamerbatar from TMO.

Finally you guys can make use of the front facing camera. Yes video calls are coming. The camera improvements talked about in the last screenshot leak is confirmed as well as many more stuff.

Check out those folders. It has been a Nokia thing having folders. I know the implementation would now resemble iPhone by showing the little mini icons, but do remember, Nokia’s always had folders. I hope organising them is much simpler than Symbian.

We’ve also got some in browser copypaste goodness. It’s a little more Nokia Windows phone like with those brackets. This time it works in browser. I like the way N9 does copy highlighting but it’s more precise to have brackets.

nice! been waiting for these. too bad I broke the usb socket on my N9…. apparently the warranty won’t cover it either and their estimate for the fix is 266eur, because they would swap the whole pcb. luckily a local place promised to solder a new socket for 79 euros.

    • Tej says:

dude how did it break? is it having a common issue of loose socket like N900 and broke during regular use ? or did it break by accidental force ? please tell me. im planning to buy one and i cant face the same ussie as my N00

  2. dsmobile says:

But it is only a Google Video call and that sounds funny that the “enemy” is only one to support that feature.

N9 is become best google service phone out there :D

May be others will follow but I heard that Skype might never get video call for N9 :(

    • myname24 says:

No direct video call on 3G ?

      • dsmobile says:

No classic video call as operator call you have in symbian and I don’t think that will come even PR1.2 has API for video calls now.

Google video call seems to work really good over 3G. Sadly I don’t know anyone who really using Gtalk.

Nokia should join up with Facebook and make a Push messaging and video call service to Nokia phones.

        • Aleve Sicofante says:

Honestly, I don’t know anyone who uses mobile video calls. We use them in the family to see a new born baby from our brother who’s abroad, but we all set up a simple Skype conference for that. I have never ever seen anyone making a videocall on a mobile phone, or know anyone who knows anyone who does or ever did.

I’m a user of Gtalk (every Gmail user is a potential user of it, so it’s huge) and I applaud they support that instead of other standards. XMPP is open and others can use this facility in PR 1.2 to allow for those people who do want video calling on mobile.

      • incognito says:

It’s kind of an obsolete standard nowdays given the extremely low quality mandated – on the large screens of today’s phones it would look like crap. Pretty much no new smartphone supports it.

Even tho I always was for a proper GSM standard regarding video calls, so I’d definitely prefer an upgrade of standards, I can live with 3rd party services video calling, especially since I consider that feature a gimmick anyway. Being standardized would hugely help in the spread, tho, as you wouldn’t have fragmented isles of video-call enabled devices that cannot talk between eachother as they don’t have the proper software.

        • dsmobile says:

Well Nokia has failed with video call as they never did move on with that standard and upgrade it to support WiFi even using the phone numbers to make the call.

also operators killed that feature because the high price of the video call.

nokia could make a real comeback with the video call feature if they just work it with NSN and operators and make it work with the phone numbers even they could use FREE wifi for it and made it same price as voice calls over 3G and 4G.

Same goes with the sms/mms those haven’t upgrade for years and now we have a mess with the 10 different services out there and you always have problem what app is HIT app currently that everyone use. Now its whatsapp and next year it might be something else.

Consumers only get Poor battery life and fragmented services. Damn idiots they have no idea what connecting people means anymore.

          • StefanP says:

The whole idustry (operators, handset makers and infrastructure industry) slept and is still sleeping. Where is RCS, IMS, etc? Even MMS does not work between all operators! It’a a wonder that eventually HD voice becomes a reality. All the messaging, video calls, “checking in”, etc., happens nowadays on facebook, skype, “line”, “path” and whatever is out there. Good phones handle all these accounts under contacts entry and have multiprotocol chat clients.
Operators are now whining because they become dumb bit pipes and want to block all those competing services. Ridiculous!

    • akse says:

Skype worked already in N900 so “porting” it shouldnt be such a big task.

      • incognito says:

Oh, if it only was that simple… The thing is that Nokia uses Skype’s binary library (skyhost, voicehost, videohost) and then builds on top of it with their own Telepathy ‘plugin’. Until Skype gives them the core libraries (in this instance videohost) that can work on the N9, there’s nothing much that can be done. We do not know if Nokia has access to it or not atm.

However, I don’t think Skype is hiding that from them – after all, that library is used on many platforms (mostly VoIP phones and terminals) so it should be available for the N9′s architecture – but even if available, it takes time to build the Telepathy interface for it (and probably to update the Phone UI stack to be able to use video in the first place), and we don’t know how much Nokia is committed. I remember they’ve put WONTFIX status on Skype video in the Bugzilla, tho :(

Either way, I guess we’ll have to wait and see…

        • Shaun says:

The N9 hardware and core OS isn’t *that* different than the N900 though. The CPU/GPU are surely binary compatible? Maybe the library from Maemo5 could be used nefariously?

Also, with Microsoft and Nokia being buddy-buddy, you’d think someone could knock the relevant heads together at Skype/Nokia to get this working.

  3. Viipottaja says:

Wow, look at this, blast from the past of missed Nokia opportunities: Nokia N810 for $112. Amazing that someone still has them at stock!

    http://1440wall.com/

    Description:

“It isn’t much larger than an iPod or MP3 player, But does so much more. Nokia N810 is a pocketable handheld information device that plays music, videos, and stores photos. N810 has a large 4″

  4. Ron says:

There’s no point in not releasing this asap.

  5. Adriano says:

Ooohhh, damn, now that i’ve the n9 under reparation…. Want it back soon to download pr 1.2 asap! Do not have idea when nokia care will be able to send it back… Hope to get it back soon… And also hope that the complete substitution of the entire chassis wont cost me 266 euro as said above… My fault forgetting to have it with me, the moment it fell from my jacket and that flight of 2 meters onto a concrete floor has been one of the most slo motion jeopardising moment in my life… Two weeks of life and already broken… Result one single crack on the upper right polycarb shell, nothing more, everything still running, just that horrible crack that ruins the perfect design.. A memento of my fault too big to be beared, must admit that any other phone would’ve ceased to run with a white flag and a goodbye…

    • dsmobile says:

I always use the cover that come with my N9. I do just cant afford to take any risk to use it with out the cover even I am temped as it would be slimmer with out the extra rubber.

But even that might not help if device makes a long drop :(

      • Adriano says:

I know, thought about it exactly that morning during breakfast before going to work… Damn me and my lazyness… Should’ve picked it from the box and used as it’s meant to be… Now I wont be back to symbian (now feeling all its age and clumsyness) longing to get back harmattan and wondering how much the repair will prey from my wallet… :)

      • incognito says:

I dropped my (well, now my girlfriend’s) N9 while I was walking so it ended up at the tip of my foot just as I was making a step so it got kicked farely hard and ended up smashing against a wall at quite a speed with bone-chilling noise.

Result: not a scratch! (and I was certain that at least the edges will show some damage) Granted, it was in the silicone case, but given how well it faired I’d guess it would fare just as well without the case, apart from some minor surface damage. The case is too thin to give it any structural protection apart from scratches.

        • Zarsky says:

Damn, I wasn’t as lucky….dropped my N9 on a stone floor outside a monastery on my vacation in Portugal. :( It fell from about on meter with the screen against the ground…I was surprised that only the glass broke, but not the screen.

Is there a easy way to replace only the glass? Or is it like on iPhone4 were the screen is glued to the glass?

Going to change it myself either way cause I don’t think that the warranty will cover it…

  6. Kiani says:

is there any flash support in PR 1.2?

  7. incognito says:

So, it’s the N900 all over again – it also got Skype/GTalk video call in its PR1.2 update (before ANY other platform, just to note)… Let’s hope the updates to Telepathy in Harmattan will make that much better experience than on the N900.

  8. BJ says:

I wonder what this means for Skype, if anything. I don’t think N8 has received Skype video calling support yet?

  9. Luisito says:

MMM… Those brackets are usefull, every WP, Opera Mini user can say that… ahhh… Hurry up Feb is just around the corner and its supposed to be the date when Belle will be free to meet my N8, sadly I can afford a second N9, just played a lot with it for a week, until it sliped off my hands and commited suicide from a 7th floor

  10. All looks like fantastic improvements, can’t wait, love my N9 :-D

  11. aboodesta says:

Question, if I flashed my N9 with a firmware, will I get the update prompt? and if that is the case, will it update to a newer version of the one I flashed, or a newer version of the original firmware?

    • incognito says:

Yes, and yes. However, if you flashed your device with a firmware for other market target than your own, you will have to wait for the update for that specific market, so the update might come later (or earlier) for you.

  12. deep space bar says:

    now for the updated belle

  13. Michael Faro-Tusino says:

Checked TMO and Navifirm was wrong. They thought 22.2011 was 1.2.

Apparently he got it, as his device was given “by a friend” inside Nokia.

  14. Tiago Silva says:

Can’t come soon enough, I have my N9 for 2 days and I already have to hunt for the apps in the App Grid.

  15. ggg says:

the markers for selecting text in web need to be opaque.

skype video calling is much prefered

folders solution is too iphonish, but seems nice.

no official landscape support for home views?

i hope n9 web can download any type of files and set the desktop as default user agent.

  16. Elio says:

Does that mean that we can also take pictures with the front camera now?

  17. Aleve Sicofante says:

They are actually addressing issues and improving the usability. Not bad for a “dead platform” huh?

I can’t wait for my N9 to arrive!

  18. Bertie says:

This will be bigger than Mango. I cannot wait to get my N9.

P.S. Why is every second comment about someone dropping or kicking or smashing his N9? It hurts me!

    • efion says:

Because, it’s just a beautiful piece of bar!
Previously, i never use a rubber/hard protection on my phones, even on my N8, it’s because you can buy each casing parts, and easily dissamble and assemble by yourself, not like the N9, once you fall and ruined those beautiful body, there’ll be no turning back, you have to go to NC, buy those sleek, expensive body, dissamble all those components front to back.
      Hope yours will be fine
Anyway, becareful with the USB door, i (my 2 years son, actually) already break mine :(

  19. stylinred says:

whats so hard about folder organization on symbian? oO its just create and drag and drop

    • incognito says:

Harmattan is all about ‘swipe’ so it would be kind of disconnecting if you’d set up the folders as on Symbian… App grid has to keep its consistency, so going deeper into it and hunting back buttons would not work with the overall style…

  20. Ash says:

Consider yourself lucky! That was a miracle I think. The first thing I learned some three weeks back when my magenta N9 was barely four days old was this: Gorilla Glass scratch resistance is nothing but myth! I was so careful with my then scratch-free N9 when my excitable nephew armed with a die-cast metal toy car came up to me, actually more like rammed into me while I was texting and there it goes…his car onto my N9′s screen. At first I thought wow no scratch! But then I breathe into the glass like I usually do when I clean and there I saw it. The part that got scratched won’t mist at all. And when the phone’s screen gets smudged, it’s just there, unmistakably scratched!

    • Ash says:

This should have been a reply to Incognito’s post regarding his girlfriend’s N9.

    • efion says:

      OK
notice on the screen a while, and got my scratches too on the N9′s screen, although it just daily use touch and i never drop it :(

      • Ash says:

Dust can cause scratches too. That’s why it’s important to have a pouch for it. I’m not too fond of zagg shield with its ripple but its the only option I can think of to protect that scratch-magnet of a gorilla glass.

  21. Ash says:

I hope PR 1.2 comes out officially sooner than later. I considered myself lucky enough when my newly bought N9 prompted me to a PR 1.1 update so I never had to go through flashing it and all. I’m bad at that so good for me. Imo, the camera after PR 1.1 takes good to really great pictures in daylight. The low-light takes decent ones but I guess not much improvement could be done with it sporting dual led flash. In the end, it’s knowing how to use the camera and no automatic mode is a bad way to do it. You have play with it to get the best out of it.

  22. DrexarN9 says:

Can’t wait for the update. Especially the App Folder. Really helps a lot :D

  23. n9 says:

Id like to know, is it possible after the 1.2 to zoom while making a video? ( as i know atm is not available 1.1)?
    Thanks!

  24. LaW says:

When will this update be avaliable and also where do i update the firmware from, it wont work with nokia suite.
