Nokia Social Updated to v1.5? – more widgets.
Nokia Social app has apparently been updated to v1.5 at Nokia Store and it brings more widgets. Looking for Nokia Social brought me to the ‘Social Networking Client’ which won’t let me download it as I apparently already have it on the N8.

Hey jay, Heard that Belle is the last update for N8. carla and donna updates is not available for N8 is that true?

it’s reasonable.
It’s not. I can give you tons of reasons. The only valid one would be a break in HW platform, which there will not be until Donna, if Donna comes at all.
My reasons include market perspective and support resources
dint dsmobile say something about it was not hardware but more of the support for that device has ended?
Don’t make financial sense to support it thou. Especially if a new symbian camera is coming out.
Support can only end two years after the last device has been sold. I mean the technical support and bugfixing obligation that eg. german law requires them to do.
The Core App Suite is still in a lot of trouble. If the QML one finally gets rid of all the old hassles, it would very well make sense to simply deploy those to the S^3 initial batch, just like the Anna/Belle Browser made it to some of the S60v5 range.
It would make sense if C and D rely on the 1GHz CPU of the newer phones and the 680MHz on the N8 doesn’t cut it. Damn 500 really messes things up though as it lacks the GPU.
Well, you can still switch between bitgdi and OpenGL2 for the rendering.
680 MHz will always cut it for Symbian and the normal apps. The only thing where this comes in as a disturbance is for imaging software and for games. Anything that needs a lot of processing power. The core apps on Symbian will never require that and QML Components if dynamically loaded will never ever reach any limits within the initial s^3 batch.
It would be a supriae, if D would not arrive. After all Accenture is now doind the development and Id expect them to be angry, ig Nokia desidef to cut the last part of the roadmap and they would be left with the developers

So if the N8 won’t be getting Carla and Donna, it means that Nokia is still planning to produce new Symbian phones in the future? Who will buy them? Everyone in the world now knows that it’s stupid to invest on new Symbian phones not only because its end is drawing near, no developer is also interested in releasing their apps for the platform. Do Nokia think they can actually sell 150 million new Symbian phones like they used to?
everybody who needs a phone that works will buy symbian? why should i care what happens in two years to a plattform? btw. the installed user base of symbian is so large, that there will be developer support for it, just to bring people to some services which they can use later on meego or which plattform nokia will use in the future.

Yep.. Its great for Belle.. The Larger Widget has Scrolling, and many other features and is really cool, but i had to remove all former Social Files from Installations files first.. Then download and install..
i’m using symbian anna on my c6-01 but there is no update for nokia social network seen on nokia store yet. Has anybody succeded to download version 1.5?

Considering Nokia, they still haven’t killed AVKON, menu and homescreen are still not in Qt, Qt Quick or QML. Nokia social is still WRT -.-
The whole App Suite needs a rewrite. Once everything is in Qt, Symbian will be a lot better of. I’ll go mad, if Carla doesn’t deliver there! And even more if they don’t push it for first gen Symbian^3 Devices. Especially if it’s unportable!
2nd gen symbian^3 handsets have more memory and this is the key i think plus of course more memory ..
the N8 will get updates but Carla probably won’t make it to the e7/n8/c7 range.

So when will Nokia actually make all the core apps and components qt-based, or is that impossible? Belle uses qt 4.7.4, so exactly which core components in Belle are qt and which are WRT?
Nokia store is finally moving to full QT (in beta currently), and after checking beta labs, the maps suite is fully moving to qt as well. That means the other core apps will then use qt as well right?
I too hope Carla implements qt much more widely, and I hope the N8 will support Carla.
Donna might be done in full Qt
Noticed it this morning and installed it on my E6 with leaked Belle, but still not working, as 1.4.
What a pity…
If it fails to update, remove all Social Files from “Installations” first..like i did..

The real problem in symbian anna is you could not see social update 1.5 on nokia store still seems version 1.3 in the store.
As far as i know its only for Belle.. I have E7 belle.
The Large Widget will only work on Belle..
Its only for Belle .. not long Belle will replace Anna soon

Just installed it on my N8 running Belle..
Played with it for 5 minutes so far..
Doesn’t feel very stable. Just crashed on me a minute ago.
Love the widget and the entire interface feels more fluid than your average S^3 app. First impression is that Nokia Social is close to being the winner social networking app! My opinion might change again after a few hours of use haha..
Just need to work on a bit of stability issues.
Did you restart phone as instructed?
Ok so a couple of problems noticed.
(The stability issue feels like it’s disappeared after a restart)
i) The pictures loaded in Social is terribly low in resolution. It’s so bad that, we might as well not load the pictures at all.
ii) When I refresh my facebook feed on my widget, the widget updates and show new feeds. But the actual app is not refreshed. You need to go into the Social app itself and refresh manually. Can’t understand how on earth that’s slipped past the Dev team.
I had similar stability issues after installing the app, but as you say on restarting the phone those issues appear to have been resolved.
I always be looking for more and more widgets, thanks for sharing.

I’ve installed it on my N8 with leaked Belle.
I have to say that the widgets are very good. The app itself is not as fluid as fmobi but the widgets more than make up for it.
The best feature is that it has linked my facebook contacts to the contacts in my phonebook.
The one’s that have not automatically linked can be manually linked via the phonebook and the ‘manage links’ option. It opens up the app and lets you link manually. If you go into the phonebook contact you can open the app directly through it.
I don’t know whether this would be the same with Twitter although I don’t see why not.
Worth downloading.
A big improvement on the previous version and widgets run great in Belle.
If they sort out the in app UI then this would be a really good app.

Is ‘Carla’ with everything written in Qt & if it is so .. will not the phones require more RAM ?

I have absolutely no clue where the myth comes from, that with Qt, you’ll need more RAM. That is definitely wrong!

Nokia Carla Update can be made possible to Nokia Symbian^3 DEVICES(N8,E7,X7 AND E6) if Nokia over clocks the 680MHz CPU’s to 1GHz…. This can be done by Nokia and is quiet possible too !! Hope they do this! Cheers
Carla does not REQUIRE the 1GHz. It’s not something that is absolutely necessary. By the way, the initial S^3 batch can only go up to 772 MHz afaik. Everything above would damage the hardware, which Nokia cannot let happen.

8. At CES gorilla glass manufacturers demo lighter slimmer yet strong gorilla glass.

10. Lumia comes to new geographies, aasha series launched in more countries.
11. Nokia’s rumoured acquisition of smarterphone OS confirmed.
This would be a very good subject to write an article to MNB – do a summary of Nokia news in the end of every monht! After that it could easily done after every year too!

Next generation GPU in symbian phones will be BCM 2835.. It is 2 times powerful than Tegra 2 and iphones 4S’s GPU…It is cheaper thats why Nokia will use it in Carla symbian phones ti make profits..

Anyone else unable to upload pictures stright from gallary after upgrading to 1.5? It was working on 1.4 earlier. Now says “Feature not supported” when clicked on that photo sharing icon.

When I press share symbol in Gallery my 701 says “Device does not support the function”. It used to work fine before…
