Video: 43 Min. Walk-through of PR1.2 on N950 (This time in Chinese??)
Jaydee tipped us off in the comments section about a new video ‘preview’ eventhough it’s over 40 minutes which makes it a short movie in my opinion; the video is by one Amanda Lam (thanks alot!), thankfully even though the video is in Chinese (I think, possibly Korean?) it has English subtitles about what feature is being discussed, so you can still learn something, Enjoy:
In case your more of a German Speaking person then THIS one is probably for you.

Actually Cantonese
nice cat on the lock screen
Actually the ‘cat’ on her N9′s lockscreen is the logo of Lonely Cats Games.. Dunno what happened to that company that brought us Smartmovie on the once glorious S60v3, Xplore file manager that I find useful and still use it on my N8 to this day and LCG Profimail that I’ve never used before.
very detailed demo.
Understandable why the video is soo long. 43 minutes were needed to capture the awesomeness that is PR 1.2 on N950
Quite comprehensive and still there’s more that she haven’t demoed in the video… Looking forward to PR1.2… can’t wait.. And to Belle too,of course.
ching bing bong jkafoamn.\
you don’t understand but Jay understands.
lol
Fuckin’ prick.
Maybe you should try learning English first before trying to insult the Chinese language.
Jay understands (as he’s well educated), but not when you’re chattin’ shit.
Diu lei Lou mou la. Sohai
Looooooool!
I wouldn’t go anywhere near his mum let alone f@ck her, she smells like dog sh@t.
haha its this kind of retarded racism that piss me off.
He’s probably jealous that he’s incapable of learning one language properly let alone learning and fully understanding a second, including complex things like medical terms (like Jay has and still is).
The most ironic thing is when our people take over the world (it’s inevitable and coming REAL soon lol), he’ll HAVE to learn Chinese (most likely Mandarin) and understand it too. I’d absolutely LOVE to see him try to take the piss out of the language then loooool…
Maybe he’s got an inferiority complex and his self-esteem is so low that he needs to insult people more intelligent than he is to make himself feel better and/or good about himself.
I actually pity the guy now and take all of my personal insults towards him back…
I still think his mum smells like dog sh@t though!
nice review actually, 1 missing, front camera function.. (i know 950 does not have front camera) just curious…
It does.. But on the top right hand compared to N9′s bottom right..
Oh man.. I’d like to have one of those keyboard beauties
why Nokia, why?!
Amanda Lam is really a Maemo/Meego hardcore fan…By the way, I think Cantonese is one of Chinese languages, as well as Mandarin.
haha, she has the dev device, and N9 is not launched in Hong Kong.
Great job Nokia.
And btw she speaks cantonese which is a regional language of Chinese spoken by 99.9% of hong kong citizens.
In china, I think more than 90% of people speak Mandarin
No way 99.9% of HK citizens speak cantonese. Just no way.
Most Chinese in mainland speak all kinds of weird regional dialects, some more or less debatably mandarin. Most people know proper mandarin to a certain extent.
laowai means expat no? haha.
hmmm. in hong kong people do speak Cantonese alot no? its like the language of choice there. and agree with the rest of your statement. =)
I reckon that Cantonese is kind of like “national” language for HK citizens lol
FUCK THIS IS GETTING ME PISSED OFF…..I WANT THAT PHONE NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
does look pretty no? i wonder why they dint mass market this phone. but then again i doubt the praise for the n950 will be better than n9/lumia thou.
the premium plastic feel is amazing. and its so light!
I have the N950 and the N9, if you would ask-me to chose Iwould keep my n950… the screen is not pentile/not as bright as the n9, but the quality of image/text is way better.
The sliding keyboard is fantastic way better than the N900, perfect for email. the aluminum is raly good and im still wondering how they manged to put the charging lead under the aluminum but still visible, amazing, the glass is not as curved as the N9 one and the swipe is not as natural. Still its pretty fantastic, not terribly heavy almost the same as the N9.
If I had to chose I would probably keep my N950, The bonus of the n9 for me is outside use brighter screen and does not say developer device in the back
To paraphrase the Soap’s (Dexter Fletcher) quote from the `Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels`: N9 for show, N950 for a pro.
N950 would be able to replace my aging N900 (tho I prepared on time and got me another N900 as a reserve), but I still wouldn’t give up the white N9, so I’d be using both… When I need to work, the N950 would serve me perfectly as a pocketable laptop replacement just as the N900 does now; when I need to check the weather, an RSS feed or such mundane tasks, I’d use the N9…
Sadly, I cannot get either of them, mainly because Nokia doesn’t want to sell me the N950 at all (and I cannot get it as a dev either, I was too late to apply for it) and wants me to jump through hoops to get the N9 unicorn edition (i.e. to take a trip to Finland/Czech Republic/Oman/Vietnam) that, being an idiot I am, I’ll eventually do.
Oh, Nokia, Y U NO SELL THEM TO ME?!?
It’s still possible to get the N9 via dev programs, maybe even the N950.
Read this thread….
http://forum.meego.com/showthread.php?t=5307
The N9′s more suitable as a testing device anyway, obviously.
I’ve seen plenty of N950 devs say the screen’s not as good overall as the N9′s.
Except for very fine text, because of the PenTile of course.
There’s no way it’d be better for images/videos…
And I’ve also seen plenty say the keyb’s not as good overall as the N900, primarily because of the slide mechanism.
Contrary to rumors that’s the reason it was canned, the mechanism’s not faulty.
But it’s just annoying sometimes apparently.
because hinges where “apperently not sturdy enough…but none of the developers seem to have no complaints about the phone….which adds even more questioning….plus the to go with carriers….even though they have the E7 which is made with the same style and material as the N950
some one sabatoged nokia …cause the N950/N9 would have got them back on their feet and above everyone else
SEll PHONE NOW
There are subtitles for all the important points, but do any of you want me to attempt a translation?
That would be awesome.. Yes please..!!
LOL this is really tiring. And I’m not even 10 minutes in…
=============================================
Hello, everyone. It’s time to introduce something new.
You’ve all seen these two devices before. On the left is the Nokia N9, and on the right is the Nokia N950. It is a developers-only edition. It comes with a keyboard. It is impossible to purchase this device.
The N9 and N950 both run Meego Harmattan. However, the N950 runs a newer firmware PR 1.2 Beta. There are some new features that have not be released to the N9. I can show some of them for you all. If you are an N9 user, you can anticipate it.
First off, let’s see the OS edition/number. Under settings, you can see Meego 1.2 Harmattan listed.
First, the most noticable difference, if you have set up facebook or twitter, on the lock screen, you can see a notification on the lock screen. The older version does not have this notification. You will also see a small icon at the top of the status bar. Also, you will be able to see it in the Events view. This is the same for Twitter.
Another easy-to-spot difference is in the calender icon. On the N9, with 1.1, the calender icon does not show the current date. With the newer firmware, you can see today’s date.
Also, on the N9 if you have a lot of apps, you have to scroll like this, all the way through. It’s really hard to find apps. On N950 PR1.2, you have folders. It is similar to the iPhone or iPad implementation or Android 4.0 or higher. Now how do we create a folder? I’ll show you. You long press on an empty area, you will see a new folder button. A new folder icon will appear. You will see a small red x which means you can delete it since it’s empty. I can add another one. And another one.
Next, we can drag other icons into the folder. I’ll drag youtube into it. Next, I’ll drag music into the folder. Oops, I put it into the wrong folder. I can also drag from folder to folder. I’ll delete the extra folder. Since the folder is still called new folder, I’m going to rename it. This handwriting recognition pane background can be changed to something dimmer. There are some improvements to recognition. I’ll name it MORE/EXTRA [I don't know the next two words]. You can see that it adjusts auto-completion for the phrase I selected earlier. The most frequent completions will be displayed. PR1.1 does not adjust auto-completion this way. So that’s how you rename a folder.
You can see that if a folder has a lot of apps, you can scroll through them like this. If you have fewer apps, the folder view will be smaller. If there’s enough apps, it will display the top four icons in the folder as the folder’s icon. However, you can not put folders into folders. If a folder has contents, you will not be able to see a red x. From inside folders, you can uninstall apps by long press. Obviously, if it’s not an app, you won’t be able to uninstall it.
Besides folders, PR1.2 has other new features. Under Settings-> Language, as I discussed earlier, you have the option to change the background color of the handwriting area. Under languages, they have also added a lot of languages, including Vietnamese, Thai, Kazakh, Persian, etc. Obviously, in Hong Kong, there’s no use for it. You may need it for accent marks [?].
==================================
To be continued..
That’s great, thanks for that!
If you have time, I’d love to see the rest of the translation.
But I imagine 43mins will be very lengthy
finally finished
===============================
In PR1.2, The spacing between characters are wider. For example, I’m going to use my own app here, to test… (she wrote “cat”). Remember this position. Now on the N9, remember it uses PR1.1. This is difficult to find an app. With folders this becomes easier. I’m gonna write “cat” again. Now you can see that on N950, characters have more spacing — but the amount that you can see on a single page (without scrolling) is less. On the PR1.1, the spacing is tighter. When it’s wider, it’s easier to read, but there’s less on the screen.
And there’s more. In the settings.. you can see that the spacing in PR1.2 is wider. In settings there are also some changes. The Manage applications setting is now a button. Before, it was this icon. The color is also different. In all the setting screens, the background is black, to match the overall theme. In PR1.1, the background is white. Along with these minor changes, there are also a lot of new features added. They’ve added this [magnifier? not sure what she's pointing out]. In notifications, we saw that before there are notifications for facebook and twitter, you can actually configure them. There are two more options — for Facebook and Twitter related options. When you receive a message, or friend request, or [other?] notification, you can adjust it to notify you or not. Same for twitter.
Now in the Twitter app, there are also updates. It’s in this folder. Now I’m going to open twitter in PR1.1 to see what’s different. On PR1.1, the profile is named [something incorrect]. It’s a mistranslation. On PR1.2, it’s been fixed. Retweet is now translated [correctly]. On PR1.1, the icon for tweeting is an email icon, but when you click it, they are twitter contacts instead of email contacts. This has been replaced with a “@” icon. When you are trying to share pictures, on PR1.1, the newest pictures are on the bottom. This is inconvenient when you’re trying to find a picture, you have to scroll a long time. In PR1.2, this has been fixed and the latest pictures show up on top.
There are also some new features in facebook. I’m gonna open facebook now. In facebook on PR1.2, there is a camera icon. PR1.1 has this too, but with different results. On PR1.1, this brings up the gallery, and as stated before, the oldest pictures are at the top. Now on the newer firmware, you can either choose gallery or camera. And this will directly launch the camera. I’m going to take a picture of this [don't know what that thing is]. There is also a new feature in the camera, and that is, as you can see, the grid. And you can modify that in the setting. After you take the picture, after a while, it will return you to the facebook app and you can choose whether or not to share it..
Now what else is new.. [she shows the notes app, but I don't know why]. At first we talked about the camera. Now besides the grid, there is also something new things. When you’re taking videos, you can click this light. When you click it the LED turns on. Click again to turn it off again. You can also use this as a flashlight if you didn’t install the flashlight app.
A very interesting change is in settings. Next, under [?], and in multimedia data/settings, there is this option for face detection in the gallery. Now in the gallery, if you have pictures of people’s faces, this is me here, you can tag the picture of the person. You can set the area for their face, the select the person. And it’s me… Now there’s this extra name on the person. Now what is this good for? When you’re looking at this gallery… in PR1.2, compared to PR1.1, there is an extra toolbar button that displays pictures by people’s faces. And if you take another picture. I’m going to take a picture of myself…
Now taking a picture of yourself isn’t that easy because the phone does not come with a secondary, front-facing camera. I have to use this timer. There are options for 2 seconds and 10 seconds. I’ll choose 10. Then select the camera icon with a 10 and it’s ready. When you’re taking a picture the LED turns red. Now I’m going to that picture. Here it is. You can see that because I set my face earlier, it’ll now ask me if this is Amanda Lam. It is, so you tap. Now it’s tagged. Now if you view by face, you’ll see the new picture. There are now three total in that album. This will also work if you take group pictures — you can tag multiple people’s faces. The device will be able to recognize them.
Now besides taking pictures and tagging pictures, normally you will also use the device to listen to music. There are changes in PR1.2 for the music player. For example, if I choose a track and click the album art, you can see all the tracks in the album. Now if I open a track on PR1.1, it will not have this feature. If I press, it had no use back then. Now, I can access the album’s tracks by clicking the art. Now, you can also create a playlist. You can add tracks to that playlist. And then save the playlist for the future. Now you see the playlist show up. You can set playlists of songs for various moods. Now in PR1.1, there isn’t this “+” button. This is one of the major improvements.
Besides that, if you got to the songs and long press one of them you will see that the besides the popup menus being different, there are also some new options. In PR1.1, you can still add to a playlist, but you can’t modify the playlist. Also, you don’t know where the playlist is. At first, in PR1.2, if we choose to add to playlist, you have the option to select which playlist to add to. Also, you can add to the currently playing list. You can also directly delete songs. So if your friend sends you a song you don’t like, you can delete it in from the music app. This will also delete the file. That is the finish of the music player’s new features.
Now in PR1.2, there is another new feature. It is in settings->multimedia sharing. If you know what DLNA is… you can toggle the setting on and off. Now when it is on, you can see that next to the clock, there is a twitter icon because it’s on. And the icon next to the twitter icon is the DLNA icon. And if you click here [the statusbar], you can see that DLNA is on. Now what does this mean? It means that if you have a computer with DLNA support, you can read the music or videos or photos on the device. And you can stream it directly. It’s very simple. If you are using WIFI at home, you can use you computer at home, if you’re using Windows 7, you can see this icon [Media on N950], and see the N950′s music, videos, and photos and play/show them directly. This is a very convenient feature.
On PR1.2, the Maps app also have new features. On PR1.1, sometimes you won’t see street names if you click on it. On PR1.2, there isn’t this problem. Also, if you are looking for directions, on PR1.1, you can choose your current location, but you have to search for it by hand and is inconvenient. Also, you can long press on a portion of the map, but it is not a very obvious feature. Now on PR1.2, this was modified slightly. When you choose a starting position, you can select either current position or a position from the map. And if you select position from map, you can directly long press. For destination, you can do the same.
Besides the maps, Drive is also updated. On PR1.1, you can just select a position from the map for a destination. But on PR1.2, you can do this. It will ask you if you want directions to that point, and you can click Drive Here. Also, in PR1.2, you can add the location to favorites. Then you can navigate to favorites and see all your saved locations. This was not possible before. Also you can set a position for home in settings. The older version is very simple and lacks a lot of features. There are more things to play with on the newer firmware. For example, you can choose to use some roads and not others, and also notify you if you’re speeding or if you’re going too slow. You can set using 80km/hr as the base. If you’re going a certain speed above 80km/hr, it will give you a warning. Also, under Voice, there are some new options. One of them can speak street names, but I haven’t tested [yet] whether it will actually read it. And you can also download it for other languages. When you’re setting a destination, you can select the previous destination or to go home. And this is the updated Maps and it provides a lot more features compared to the original.
There are also some new features in the Email program. Now if you open a contact, I have here “Marie Cat Cat” [:)]. This contact is synced to my google account. And you can see that this person has this email account [Mail for Exchange]. Before, you wouldn’t know which person is sync’d to which account, but now it tells you directly. That lets you know about the account easily.
Now in PR1.2 has some features related to PRM[?]. It’s easier to use. If you have Exchange Server, you’ll know that some address book is stored on teh server. If you select this option [?], you can pull up all the accounts stored on the server.
Under settings, you can set this option to group all related emails into threads. But in reality it doesn’t always work. On the email, next to the subject, you will see a counter [number of emails in the thread, I presume]. If you select the email, you can see the email’s contents. And if you select the thread, you will see the latest email in the thread. And if you press [?], you can see all the emails in the thread. If you select an email, it will also tell you which number it is in the thread. And this way, you can see the entire conversation — the conversation’s contents.
Swype is also updated. You can see that the older PR1.1′s Swype on the left and the PR1.2 Swype on the right. The keys on PR1.2 are bigger. Also, you can see that the numbers and special symbols are reordered. On PR1.2, they have the numbers blocked together and arranged messily. The newer firmware has the numbers on the 1st row. On the older firmware, you also frequency accidentally click on the languages button and change your language. On the newer firmware, it only displays the languages that you know [she also has to long press to get them to show up]. Now where do you set the languages that you know? [she long-presses on the swipe icon of the keyboard] It is in the Swype options. You can set the choose what languages you know and set your current language. So when you’re on the Swype keyboard, no matter how many times you click, it’ll just swap between these languages. This can avoid a lot of problems with choosing the wrong language.
Now when you’re swiping, I also want to demo this “clickbox”[?]. You can see that there are these two bars from iOS that you use to modify the selection for copy and paste. The older firmware does not have that. Unfortunately, this feature is only for the specific app. You can not paste into a different app. Future updates should be able to fix this problem. But it currently doesn’t work in PR1.2.
Also, if you’re a Linux expert, if you’re on the N9 running PR1.1 and using a Chinese Language, the spacing is weird. sometimes you can’t tell how many spaces you’ve entered. As you can see, with just one space there is a long space on the screen. And the font is also screwed up if you’re using a very simple ‘ls’ command. There are problems with the font. Also, some people don’t notice, but there are actually two buttons on the side. They have very faint colors. On the newer firmware PR1.2, you can see that it’s running a newer version of BusyBox. The spacing and fonts problem is fixed if you’re using Chinese. This is also a ‘ls’ command, but the output is neater. Here you can see that the buttons on the side are still there. But when you first open the app, you can see that the buttons are colored. That’s a minor improvement.
On PR1.2, if you’re in the multimedia view, you can select a video and choose edit. This allows trimming the head and tail of the video, you can also preview the video like this [by dragging finger along the kept portion of the video]. And you can play the trimmed video. And again. Ok, you also have a music icon. This gives you the option of keeping the video’s audio, or make sounds, or choose an existing audio file. Encoding is fast. Now I’ll play the new video. This is very short. This is pretty useful if you have videos that you need to edit immediately, like if you’re a part-time [? some Hong Kong famous person reference?].
Overall, the N950 PR1.2 beta firmware brings a lot of new features that I’ve demonstrated. This firmware will allow us developers to test it and find any compatibility problems with our apps. Also, it allows us to find any problems with the firmware itself. And we will report it to Nokia, and after a while when Nokia is ready, they will ship it to N9 users. Right now, it is rumored to ship in Feb. Hopefully, I will be able to enjoy it on my N9 since it is my primary phone. If people are impatient they have to wait anyway, because the firmware for N950 cannot be directly flashed on the N9.
Alright, I will share more things with you as I encounter them. Bye bye.

You’re a legend mate!
Thank-you so much for that!
The N950 is a sexy device and the update seems to be excellent. What logical reasons exist for killing it as a consumer product? In my opinion none.
Shut up and take my money
i heard that there is improvement for emoticons, but i cant see any screenshot of it:(
OMG! look at meego beauty, NOKIA Y? Y?
she sounds like a “He”
and his canto sounds very viet
nice.

You just repeated word-for-word a comment someone else made:
