Nokia at MWC with at least one high end? Possibly Swipe?

| February 8, 2012 | 29 Replies

According to Forbes, Nokia is going to launch AT LEAST one high end mobile device at MWC 2012. High end as defined by Nokia or the industry?

Apparently the MWC announcements from Nokia might indicate their plans for 2012.

The upoming device was not confirmed to be a Windows Phone handset, but it was specified to run an ‘unusual software feature normally found only on high-end smartphones’. Unusual and normally high end. Is this Swipe?

Last year, we heard that Nokia were coming back to MWC in a BIG way for 2012. First their at an official MWC booth instead of having their own off site venue.

Details:

  • App Planet (Hall 7)-7H30
  • App Planet (Hall 7)-7H40
  • App Planet (Hall 7)-7I10
Interestingly, we got an email yesterday with an invitation from Nokia to go to MWC. Not actually sure I can go based on current uni commitments. I’d love to as I’ve never been to MWC before and it sounds like there’s going to be some rather important products being introduced at MWC.
Even if we can’t cover it from the show floor, we’ll still of course bring you news about MWC :) New Windows Phone handsets are expected, as well as possibly the N8 successor. Strategy wise, I’d like to hear more on S40/Smarterphone and the possible Meltemi project. It would also be cool to hear Nokia’s plans for the tablet. They’ve already made 3 internet tablets (6 if you count all maemo handsets), but that was way before its time, before tablets became mainstream – I want to hear how they’re going to take on iPad.

Cheers Drew and Cameron for the tip!

Another full day with hospital placement. 7-7. They’re really great learning experiences but they do take it out of you by the time you get home :s. Good thing Belle got released YESTERDAY.

    hopefully not another n9/800 variant.

I have given up on the idea of a nokia high end device.

  3. rrrr says:

  5. Jesse says:

Software feature huh… Hmmmm.. Maybe it is Skype :D Although that is on low end phones too haha

  6. reptile says:

there were rumors about a second device with the Meego/Maemo swipe ui last year… but when they came out with the white n9, I just assumed they were talking about that…

I wonder if it’s some combination of N950 and the N9, meaning an N950, but with N9 screen, front camera, etc (I forget the other differences).

  7. Reonhato says:

Perhaps ms finally agreed to have swipe on wp. ;p

I do think that a keyboard e7 type wp phone is what a lot of wp fans are wanting.

    N8 successor with swipe?

    • Rezza says:

Symbian is probably already dead – support is being removed from Qt 5. And I remember times where Nokia really pushed for Symbian in Qt 4, so…

And you know – no Qt 5, no devels…

For Meltemi device – again, comparing to Qt 5 development – it’s already Feature Frozen, so…

    Announcement of Tango

To me it sounds like it’s about the fact that Nokia finally are moving S40 to ‘smartphone’ level. That means that Nokia would include multitasking and other highend features on S40/meltemi. At the same time Nokia is again going to be the biggest smartphone vendor! The term ‘smartphone’ is going to be obsolite anyway in the near future. Everything that today say it is a smartphone is going to be on EVERY phone soon.
What is smartphones going to evolve to? For now, maybe only to be ‘high-end smartphones’…

    just my 2 cents..

May be true, but can really Nokia have developed a totally new operating system in total secrecy, and so quickly?

      • rueaka says:

In full open : it’s called maemo and made by nokia for OMAP3, and for other hw plateform it’s smarterphoneos.
On top of that is swipe for UI and qt for devs.

‘run an unusual software feature normally found only on high-end smartphones..’

How about NFC for S40 and all the supposed ‘dump phones’?

  13. RVM says:

“unusual software feature normally found only on high-end smartphones” This obviously means that new announced Nokia device will be either low-end or mid-end at best :(

    • Johnny Tremaine says:

Yeah, that’s what I got from the news as well.

Windows Phone news and updates, will be handled largely by Microsoft, not Nokia.

And since Symbian is on its last breath, with Nokia supporting less and less, it’s obviously about S40 dumb phones for emerging markets.

In other words, for us….who cares?

I mean, when was the last time you were anticipating a dumb phone? Maybe six years ago, when I had a Razr…

  14. doom says:

i don’t understand why they don’t put symbian 3 in all the low end phones. they are already starting to put 1 ghz processors in them and bigger screens. i think it’s better than upgrading s40 with multitasking and other features.

  15. masood.alkhter says:

omg.. xenon flash and release in may and SOLD :)

  19. Jamison says:

Grrr hurry-up and tell us WTH’s happening w/Meltemi Nokia!
    Maemo6x (stripped & merged w/”some” of S40) + Qt5 + SwipeUX for your dumb/featurephones.
= instantly becoming the worlds largest smartphone vendor, not just handset maker.
And your tablet strategy, you gotta get back in the game there too!
