Video: Progress Update: Android ICS on Nokia N9 (NitDroid)

| February 12, 2012 | 18 Replies

Like the N900, there is attempts to bring Android to the N9. Been in contact with a dev over Twitter recently, DrunkDebugger, and he has gotten quite a lot done. He has even recently developed a method for untethered booting into Alternate OS. If you are interested, read about it here. Anyway, what I wanted to share, was that he has published a quick video to show some progress of his work. (Video at end of post.)

It is quite promising. Although, I’d prefer having an app compatibility layer for my N9. (Open Mobile or Myriad devs, if you’re reading this, please give it to end-users and not only for OEMS.) It would see the most advanced smartphone (in my opinion anyway) and the only true mini computer mobile, become even more powerful.

I’ve blabbered for enough, check out the video. Sadly, only 5o seconds or so long, but like I said, looks promising.

I bought Nokia N9 to escape from Android. No way I will install Android instead of using the wonderful MeeGo and its Swipe UI

Both Myriad with its Alien Dalvik, and Open Mobile with its ACL are spewing pure vaporware – they are not even close to provide the proper compatibility layer for Android which is precisely why they are trying to strike a deal with manufacturers to get enough funding to try to do it…

If they had a prime-time ready product, they’d be selling it directly when no manufacturer wants to purchase it.

I dont get it, how could this be a problem? Android is open source, the code is fully available? You can just fork the VM and run the apps? Am i missing something here?

It’s a much more delicate balance than it seems.

There’s countless lengthy threads at TMO.
Dig them up & have a careful read before unnecessarily reviving them.

The only “possible” option is IcedRobot…
But it’s at a very early stage, & progress is slow.
        It needs help/volunteers with skills….

That is seriously impressive for an alpha version. Pre-Alpha even.

  4. Chrom says:

Does anyone know how much space does ICS take? I’m tossing up between (cheaper) 16gb and 64gb for this reason alone.

  5. Adam1273 says:

I wish we could do the same with n8 and c7. :(

  6. Sergio says:

I’m really not a fan of MeeGo, but why in God’s name would someone trade it for Android?!

  7. How do i get that on my nokia n9

  8. jcar302 says:

Sometimes just because you can do something, doesn’t mean you should.
I see no point in this port, likely anyone that purchased an n9 made a purchase against android.
If i wanted an android phone, i’d just buy one of the million available.

That is much smoother than I thought! N9 would work beautifully under those on screen button. I am personally a fan of the Meego swipe UI design but it is simply not practical as a smart device (unless you use it as purely a phone that will be more than enough). Yet in the world with hordes of Android devices none of them even rival the design of N9 so this is probably a sweet combination to me.

Fuck it. I’m saving up for an N9..

  11. Seilaquem says:

This is great news. I am really close of getting to buy this little baby to me :-)

  12. Dirtymoon says:

I can see the point in it. Dual boot option for when there’s no meego app to do the job. However. Alien Dalvik would be far more useful
