Adobe Flash with Fennec coming to Nokia N9?

| February 22, 2012 | 29 Replies

There had always been mentions of flash coming to the N9 in some way after we heard the default browser did not support it at the time. In the Nokia N9/N950 section of TMO, there is a post saying Flash is being worked on. In discussions with Mozilla and Adobe there seems to be no technical issue, just business ones. It first has to undergo certification via Adobe. Once we get that, we might get an even closer to N900 like browsing (in terms of reaching the full web). It would be cool if the ‘hover’ mode got implemented so you could interact with flash objects as if you had a mouse (as they don’t often cater for touch – though much more so now than in N900′s days).

BTW, in case you missed it, Opera Mobile was available for N9 yesterday. It shall be a very tough battle for N9 user’s favourite browser. It’s great to have options :) .

Yet one more reason, why I’m glad I choose to upgrade from my Nokia N8 to the Nokia N9! Have had the phone for a couple of weeks now, and I can’t tell you how unnatural it feels to use other phones without the swipe gestures of my N9, lol. Seriously after using the swipe interface; everything else just feels wrong.

awhile back i was double tapping on my students’ n9 ;)

    • Mark says:

I look like an idiot, who has never touched a smartphone or a tablet every time I try to use another persons device.

      • incognito says:

Hah, other person’s device… I feel like an idiot when I try to pull out a N9 on my N900, and I had the N9 for only a couple of weeks and I parted my ways with it two months ago!

It’s one of those `Once you go Asian/Black you never go Caucasian/Back` moments translated to mobile interfaces *roll*

  3. Dan says:

Does this mean that there’s gonna be an N9 successor because all this apps are supporting MeeGo/N9?

    • Good question. This is like asking: you have good product we want to buy it and pay you our money. What is funny? Nobody knows why the CEO answer is “we will not sell, we don’t want your money, we know better what you must buy and this is not what you like”. Interesting especially for shareholders. Who cares about users? CEO? Company? Distribution? Who knows….?

  4. Michael Faro-Tusino says:

It will probably end up being Fennec as favoured browser, one with flash and two, due to being able to set Fennec as Default Browser. (Having trouble setting it on both N9 and N950, but will play around some more)

  5. zaldy says:

I’m assuming most if not all support for this endeavor is coming from Mozilla, seeing as how Adobe is stopping all support more mobile Flash.

    • James says:

Nope that recent strategy change by Adobe had no impact.
I asked jolo ages ago about that…
He’s the guy @Nokia driving all this with Adobe & Mozilla.
Adobe still are certifying for 10/11x…
There’s just no plans for future major releases etc.

  6. D_G says:

yes..official firefox coming to N9…then i can sync my desktop firefox with mobile..

this is the best phone out there barnone..

i would like to see 2 things: :)

    - skype video being activated
    - whatsapp for messaging

and this is all i want from this great phone!

if i want a device for productivity/business, i would get a tab (i have a tab) but thinking either to jumping to new ipad (there is a rumor of 8 inch ipad in the works) or will check out the nokia/WP tab although i really dislike the WP tiles. i would love to see a meego based tab!

    • James says:

      ["skype video being activated"]

      Never gunna happen….
1.2 apparently has changed things such that:
3rd parties can more easily bring XMPP/Jingle (Gtalk) & “maybe”" Skype.
Whether that change is sufficient for 3rd-parties, remains to be seen.
The most likely 3rd-party to bring such support is Peregrine Communicator.
But they’ve been utterly silent for months.
And getting anything out of them is a very annoying process.
Admittedly I haven’t tried for ages, so try asking them on IRC.

      ["whatsapp for messaging"]

Slightly better chance, but still very unlikely.
      Why not get behind eBuddyXMS:

      *Even more multi-platform.
      *Similarly sized user-base.
*iOS/Android clients already as featureful, probably more.
*Symbian/Maemo6x ones will soon be at parity with the iOS/Android clients.
      *Pro-active feedback/support (keen to work w/users)

Why respect whatsapp when they don’t even know that maemo6x users exist?
There may be a way to get whatsappp to work soon thanks to efforts with PhoneME.
So this may happen whether they want to help us or not.
But I still say we should actively support eBuddy 1st, at least they give a shit.

["i would love to see a meego based tab!"]

You have no idea how close that was.
      “Despite” the strategy change.

      • myname24 says:

        *Similarly sized user-base.

I would have to disagree with you because Whatsapp have a larger user base and support more like S60V3
        at least in my country

        • James says:

          eBuddy’s on iOS/Android/Sym^3/S40/WP/Maemo6x.
Possibly S60 too, I need to check that 1st.
Not doubt I’ve forgotten one or two other OS’s.
          There’s no doubt it’s more widespread…
“However”, it’s definitely not as big, at least yet.

Exact difference will never be known, as such co’s never disclose real figures.
By similar I meant it’s also has a big user-base.
One for which critical mass can quickly shift.

      • Mike says:

        I Totally agree with you!!!
Specially on supporting ebuddy xms. I already have it installed on my N9 :) .

Now all I want is Fennec and flash support :D .
I only got my N9 last saturday, but I can already say it, this is the best phone EVER!!!
        I really love it!!!

  7. pchees says:

I tried out Belle on the N8 yesterday and got really frustrated with it as I have had an N9 since Xmas. So intuitive.

  8. Ali says:

Did they say, that the update will come in the late of this month?

    • James says:

      No dates at all yet…
      Follow the TMO thread.

    • There were roumors about end of this month. Developers has been asked about betatests on N950 devices, so it is really close, unless those tests shows things to be fixed before next update. So answer is “yes, but…” as stated above. Frankly I prefere to wait for better code then have it sooner but not polished. I have waited for N9 a long time, I can wait a few more days. :)

  9. Deelatch says:

Things getting better and better for the n9. Next up, hopefully, an office editor.

  10. Deelatch says:

That’s why I said “hopefully”. How many people really believed Flash would eventually make it to the n9? To n9 owners, is the viewer as good as described in entry on the Calligra Suite website? Harmattan Office Viewer is “the best
    mobile office document viewer
available anywhere, outperforming all comparable proprietary applications
on smartphone platforms.” Harmattan that good or is this just hot air?;)
