Theme: N900 goes Harmattan

| February 23, 2012 | 20 Replies

I thought I would post about the N900. Not sure how many of you out there are still using it, but I noticed this a few weeks back, and since I posted about the N9 going N900 with the widgets, I saw it fitting to post this.

There is now a Harmattan theme for the N900. The theme comes with the MeeGo/Belle style icons, Nokia Pure? (images suggest not but comments suggest it is possible?), Lockscreen music controls, MeeGo Statusbar (lockscreen only?) and a few more features I believe.

Sadly I don’t have an N900 to test this on, but it looks quite promising. It is one of the few themes that is still getting support and development.

shame nokia didnt push Maemo onto a tonne of devices after the success of the n900… they still havent learned which is the sad thing -_-

    • viipottaja says:

well, fif you mean commercial success, n900 ws not one.
still, i too was thinking the other how i wished they had made a qwertyless slim version as well. then again, the virtual keyboard kinda sucks on Maemo5… :)

      • stylinred says:

n900 actually faired rather well here in NA (compared to the n97 and later Nokia devices)

i dont think it was a major success but certainly far better than anything else Nokia brought over after the N95

N900 was first shown on Nov 2009. If they improved it since then and included new technologies (capacitive screen, 1 GHz, onscreen keyboard,…) – now it would be the best phone on the planet.

I didn’t like the resistive screen on the n900 that was the only thing that put me off getting it . And yes I tried the n900 just after the demo units were in the nokia uk store (staff’s hand).

How well does the Flash player work on the N900? Have heard it’s equivalent to 9.3, and as I believe my laptop is using flash player 11.x was wondering if lots of videos have that “You need to upgrade flash” message.

    • incognito says:

You can trick it to report itself as a different version – http://maemo.org/downloads/product/Maemo5/tweakflashver/

There were only ‘minor’ changes on the AVM2 features between the FP 9.x and the FP 10.x (most notably the Vector type, 3D extensions, Pixel Bender filters and Sound APIs), and FP 11.x (secure random, LZMA compression and native JSON) which most sites/widgets don’t even use even if their JS logic for displaying is set to require FP 10.x/11.x – hence just by having your FP version report as higher, most of them will work just fine, of course within the performance capabilities of the old AVM2 and the N900 itself.

I have the older version of this theme from last year….or one similar. Time for me to pull my N900 out of the drawer and update it.

    Thanks for the info.

I retired my N900 when I got my N9. Oddly enough though, I’ve recharged my N800 and linked it with my N9.

Its thumb keyboard make typing blog entries or comments easier than on the N9. For some things I still miss the N900′s keyboard.

    • incognito says:

I cannot retire my N900, it almost replaced my MBP for all the work-related things I need (mostly terminal stuff where having a HW keyboard is of a great importance) and there’s no other suitable replacement, yet. Which is why I have another N900 in mint condition in case this one EoLs… The N950 would probably be able to replace it, but these days one cannot get it even as a developer :( (random rant: Nokia, Y U NO SELL IT TO ME?!)

I don’t mind tho, as the paraphrased sentence from the Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels goes – N9 for show, N900 for a pro. The only trouble is that one has a limited number of pockets, which I’ve experienced briefly while I had my N9 which had to share the same pocket as my car’s keycard :\ Wasn’t that troublesome with the black N9, but the next week I’m getting the unicorn, shiny white one and I’ll have to think of some way to prevent scratching it – I’ll probably be carrying it in the leather bag that comes with it, and I really hate those things…

      • KjM says:

If the bag/case that comes with the unicorn is anything like the Nokia leather sleeve I bought for my N9 prepare for some difficulty. It’s only fractionally wider than the N9, so slipping it on and off is not easy.

I like the black N9, wanted the Cyan (but it wasn’t available in the 64GB size) and lust after the unicorn. :)
