I am South African. I have never understood the attraction to Blackberries. Perhaps I am privileged but I have uncapped wifi at home and at the office and my Nokia N8 switches seamlessly between them so I am always connected anyway. I have a small 10Mb package with MTN that keeps me more than satisfied for those small periods of time I may be between the two.

As for BBM, who needs it, and the hassle of always asking for pins, when you can chat just as easily on Whatsapp? Even without a data package, at less than a cent per message you can get by on a few rand a month even as a heavy user.

And for those who really need BB-like data packages, they are coming. Nashua Mobile just released a data packages specifically for Nokia phones.

In South Africa the most popular deals are, by far, those involving blackberries. Internet deals are quite expensive, so the blackberry internet is a major player. Also, people are known by BBM pins just as much as phone numbers. Should an operator start a fixed cost service to rival blackberry services, players like Nokia can gain ground again.
