Nokia 808 PureView confirmed to not be coming to Australia

Some upsetting news has just come up on my screen. CNet Australia has put up an article saying that the 808 will not be coming down under. I can’t say I am surprised, but it would have been nice. It is clear that Nokia Australia want to focus on the Lumia portfolio, as mentioned in the launch I attended in February.

The official statement from Nokia is as follows

We’re not bringing the PureView 808 to Australia; our smartphone focus is on Nokia with Windows Phone, which we believe is the best fit for this market. You’ll see variations of PureView imaging technology delivered to several Nokia products in the future

I dont believe that this is what they have decided. I sort of understood not backing the N9 but not backing symbian when it already has an established user base and then the 808 which may be the last symbian flagship and that also in australia where THERE IS actually some market for nokia phones. Everyone I know is waiting for the SGS3 and the iphone 5. I have heard no one discuss buying a lumia.

  2. Paul Grenfell says:

This is just plain wrong , in every respects.. Nokia has once again failed to recognize consumer demand. Nokia OZ have abandoned all Top end Symbian users trying to force them to Lumia. Well it won work. The natural progression from N8 and E7 is undoubtedly the 808.. But Nokia have denied us this upgrade path..
There were many who ditched Nokia in disgust, after the failed Belle update. No doubt a great deal more will ditch Nokia if the 808 doesnt make it down under.
Some of us will be able to afford cash purchases overseas, but the Majority will want to buy them on a Plan.
Another massive marketing Failure by Nokia. Is it any wonder they are sliding downhill?

  3. twig says:

lol. you guys. I just looked up expansys.com.au and the Nokia 808 in White is listed as a pre order, the same as the U.S. You guys and gals will get the imported Uk version, the same as us or maybe Germany as all my imported ones start with Berlin on the maps.

    • Paul Grenfell says:

Yes, thats fine for those who can afford the $700 upfront cost, but most Aussies are on subsidised plans.. They will be the ones that will miss out. If they cant get one on a plan, then majority will shift platform.. When belle failed to arrive in OZ , many shifted to SGS2, so most likely Samsung will again pick up Nokias losses..

      • sinple says:

use the subsidised plan to get a S3, sell the S3 and use the money to buy 808

      • josh says:

I belive that, and this is a huge mistake why is elop doing this???

        • pipo says:

Has it occurred to you that this might not be Nokia’s decision but your telco’s commanding Nokia to deliver Lumia’s instead of Symbians? As the phone will be available ‘unsubsidized’. As far as I’m aware, subsidizing phones is a sales decision of telco’s not handsetmakers.

The proper title of this article should be

Nokia 808 PureView confirmed to not be subsidized by Australian telco’s!

          • James says:

            Not correct….
It’s not coming to Australia PERIOD, not even to the retail channel.
That is a Nokia Australia decision…
If Nokia Australia wanted this to be subsided & in the channel they could make that happen.
But it’s just not their focus any more, 900 is their next cab.
What’s with the necro-post by the way, pretty uncool.

    • CS says:

Just to note, all Maps start at Berlin first go. The address Maps starts at is the home where Nokia maps is developed.

  4. Grendell says:

That’s a shame. I can understand Nokia executing with Microsoft products but it seems that they now even want to execute with Microsoft’s mindset.

  5. stylinred says:

Lumia pureview isn’t going to be ready for ages…. why in the hell wouldn’t they bring the 808 out do they really think not bringing the 808 over will save Lumia sales in Aus?

It’s sad to see that Nokia still hasn’t learned anything over this last year+ makes the future grim when they’re repeating past mistakes

    • Ebon & Unicorn N9s says:

I think the new “Nokia” just wants to show Symbian\MeeGo-Harmattan isn’t good enough for sales even though they are doing way better than WP when you consider the marketing push for WP. Guess they are more keen on selling WP devices than keeping their consumer-base intact or trying to make profits.

      • Sonny says:

atleast when the next sales result come out and show symbian selling less we should know its because of this crap nokia is pulling

  6. indonesian says:

hopefully nokia 808 pureview released in Indonesia

  7. Grendell says:

Somebody tell the Nokia Board of Directors. Pride led to it’s downfall. But you do not fix it by supplanting it with arrogance!

  8. sir_bazz says:

I’m not sure who is responsible for this decision or why the Nokia 808 won’t be coming to Oz but just wanted to add my voice as another disappointed Nokia user.

Believe it or not there are still quite a few Symbian fans here in Oz and it appears as a missed opportunity for Nokia Australia for no apparent gain.

I’ll import my 808 as it’s a more palatable option than switching to a new OS.

  9. apamau says:

I am shock, why this camera not to be in australia, people in australia do buy camera, if you don’t wanna sell as a phone, then pls sell as a camera.

  10. JD! says:

Only one word for Nokia – *facepalm*

    • pipo says:

Has it occured to you that this could be a decisision of OZ’ telcos instead of Nokia?

I would first investigate this before making conclusions. If telco’s are the major factor of these devices not coming to australia/NZ then direct your anger to them instead of to Nokia.

Again, I’m not defending Nokia. They made some very stupid decisisions with regards to Symbian lately. But these guys worked over 5 years on this device. I can’t imagine nokia not want to sell it and let all that work down the drain. Because let’s be honest. By the time Pureview comes to Windows Phone (which is limited to max. 20MPixel sensors), 16MPixel camera-modules will be common and hence this 20MPixel WP-PV-model will be less impressive.

If Nokia want to take the market with PureView technology then they must take it with the current 41MPixel PureView system (not a future watered down variant)

      • James says:

If the N9 was appealing enough for the telcos, then the 808 sure as hell is too.
Much larger potential clientele that one doesn’t have to build-up.
Sure it’s shrinking rapidly, but it’s still far bigger than M-H.
No, Nokia Australia wants to try to shift that user base to WP7/8.
It;s as simple as that really…..

  11. Paul Grenfell says:

    JD, lol.. but true..

  12. Madratz says:

Nokia’s chasing away their customers to other platforms by doing this.. So they expect customers to wait for Lumia PureView™ lite while the rest of the world is rocking on PureView™..? Fat chance..!

    • Madratz says:

Those who can afford will buy this unlocked, zero profit for Nokia Australia. Those who prefer buying with contract will move on to other platform and forget Nokia for good. Can’t imagine they will let themselves be bullied to buy the Lumia.

      • pipo says:

“Those who can afford will buy this unlocked, zero profit for Nokia Australia”
–> that’s a problem for Nokia Australia. Not Nokia in general. Mostly these branch offices are simply independant distributors whom got sales rights. If Nokia (the main company) decides to revoke these rights and use someone else as distributor then that problem is solved.

Nokia should reinstate their online-stores then this wouldn’t be such a mess. In the country where I live most phones sold are unsubsidized so this point is moot where I live.

Unfortunately these mixed signals between Nokia HQ and branch offices and mutual silence makes matters only worse.

  13. steelicon says:

Just had a chat with Nokia Finland support. No definite answers.

Also had a chat with Nokia Country Distributors. No definite answers.

  14. abcs says:

Aust too? Is Lumia series selling well there?
Well, take heart Aust friends, SEA countries are nearby. You can get one from one of our countries.

  15. Sonny says:

can anyone tell me here if the 808 isn’t on nokias product page of your country but the lumia 900 isn’t also will that country get it? I’m from South Africa and neither the 808 of the lumia 900 is on their product page. thanks!

  16. Rustyknight17 says:

I`ll tell u why Nokia`s not releasing the 808 Down Under or the USA , it`s because Elop`s afraid that the 808 would knock offf sales of the Lumias . Still , if it works , go for it , make money !

  17. ADM510 says:

Comment on their facebook site your dissatisfaction

  18. Beelzebozo says:

Thank you Stephen Elop! For this ingenious decision. Elop is clearly working for Nokia’s best interests in mind. The most brilliant CEO in the universe!

    /sarcasm

  19. cardinal says:

I really wanted an 808 from a local telco, but thats not going to happen with Nokia focusing on Lumia range in NZ, it so broken for business use it’s almost worthless (but pretty!). Ask someone like Zenprise if you can use their product to manage the phone and they will tell you “no” however they can manage everything else including the 808.

What’s worse I believe the Lumia in New Zealand has two variants Telecom NZ and Vodafone and they are not really network interchangable (so telco choice goes out the window)

At least with symbian I could recommend it for business (secure comms via ipsec, managable via multiple platforms including ActiveSync and all that)

At the end of the day Nokia’s choice to support WP7.5 I believe may hurt them as the platform is not business ready (I’d like to see what WP8 brings), people often refer to Apple as the “fruit themed toy maker”, but it’s actually a more capable device/platform than the Luimia’s/WP7.5. Just really sad the Nokia has decided on not releasing the 808 down under, bad move

And yes I own an N8, N9 and my son owns a Lumia 800

  20. rustyknight17 says:

Then again , perhaps Nokia is releasing the 808 in the USA

  21. rustyknight17 says:

Perhaps Nokia will release the 808 Down Under being my point

    • James says:

      They’ve already said they won’t….
Quite the opposite from Nokia US who’ve hinted it will be available. Although it’s not yet 100% clear if that’s even local stock.

      • Rustyknight17 says:

Thanks James , for making my point for me ! At first Nokia said the 808 wasn’t coming to the USA , but then Chris Weber , president of Nokia NA confirmed that it was … This announcement fits the same pattern . Mind u , from what I’ve heard , after the no USA announcement , a LOT of outraged potential customers complained loudly to Nokia ! So u Aussies who want the 808 , start complaining to Nokia !!

        • James says:

It was never officially said it’s not coming to the US & then reversed.
There was just rumours it wasn’t coming….
So no, I doubt it will ever come to Australia, except thanks to importers.
Don’t worry, we’ve been complaining loudly, hasn’t made any difference, sadly

          • James says:

            “except thanks to importers.”

Which is nothing like being officially sanctioned in the retail channel, & being local stock etc.

          • rustyknight17 says:

Depends on what u mean by not coming to the USA . If u mean that Nokia never said that , then yes , u r right . On the other hand , several tech web sites , including Phonearena and Engaget , have stated several weeks ago that the 808 wasn`t coming to theUSA , though they apparently meant not to the carriers . But Phonearena at least stated it was Nokia`s decision …

            • James says:

In Australia from day one they’ve made clear it’s not coming AT ALL.
Meaning not with carriers, and not in the retail channel.
It’s evolved very differently to how it has in the US.
