NokConv: Dolby and Nokia putting Hollywood magic in your hands – and ears
Just a quick heads up. I’m away on placement today but before I go, here’s an interesting article from NokConv posted on May 4th.
Dolby and Nokia putting Hollywood magic in your hands – and ears
The N8 was the first smartphone ever with Dolby Digital Plus - connect up to your TV and sound system for a glorious HD Dolby Digital plus playback. Andy Dowell from Dolby said there were three obstacles:
- Getting embedded into chips,
- getting buy-in from someone who wants to put the technology in a device, and then
- getting services on air.
Occasionally you find someone who’s as enthusiastic as you, and takes a leap of faith straight over all those hurdles. Nokia had the vision, and took that leap of faith
Dolby Digital Plus was announced for the Nokia 808 PureView, Nokia 700, 701 and 603. Currently 5.1 channels are supported but Nokia wants to take that further. Surround sound is awesome – though you either have to have good 5.1+ source or some clever software that would try to mimic surround faithfully (never as good as raw surround).
They will also have Dolby Headphone technology for superior personal listening.
Cheers KF for the tip!

Awesome post! Personally, I cant wait for Nokia’s first Dolby 3D CBD 4.3inch curved 720p-1080p resolution screen with the L900 frame, watered-down (to fit) pureview and the other symbian HW capabilities. And while were daydreaming..Meego.
Can someone tell me where people are supposed to get any content (movies or whatever) with Dolby Surround encoded into it to play back through the 808? (i.e. where do Nokia expect people to get content)
There seem to very few or no legitimate sources, or can you play back iTunes movie files (.mp4 container I think?) through the 808 (or N8)?
Obviously there is a load of content on filesharing websites, but that’s all illegal. It seems very strange that Nokia would go to so much trouble to build in a feature that can only be used with pirated content…
you’re kidding right…. there are all sorts of websites where you can get digital movie files legally…
and if you bought blu-rays you could get digital copies of the films…
> there are all sorts of websites where you can get digital movie files legally…
OK which ones exactly? I know there are sites you can stream movies legally to your PC, but that’s completely different from having downloadable movie files you can play back on a Nokia.
Also, I know there are various sites you pay to access file shared content, but they are still completely illegal.
I don’t know of any sites that legally give you access to a downloadable file you can play back on a Nokia phone…
Why should Nokia care about what you use the hardware you have bought? Even if some people plays pirated material it’s not really Nokias role to act as a content police.
nokia trailers app has dolby content i believe
Own content? E.g. family videos?
Recorded with Dolby how?
can 808 play flv and mkv files ???
@manu
.mkv definitely, not sure about .flv but I think so. Could try on E7 later to see if it’ll read it.
If only Nokia actually sold these phones some where!!!
is there any effective symbian app to mimic 5.1 dolby for n8 ?
N8 doesn’t have the hardware capability for 5.1 support. it does do stereo quite well.
Ya, the fact the 808 can record and encode in dolby surround is tremendous in it’s own right. With proper technique and creativity, 808 users will be able to make killer movies. The ones that made it to the final in nokia’s competition made on N8s were fantastic. There was also Olive.
The 808 will find much work
Love it! Now let’s make Nokia hear us and globally market the N808!
