Video: AT&T Heavyweight Faceoff: HTC One X vs Nokia Lumia 900 – PocketNow

| May 13, 2012 | 40 Replies

Here’s a really good video by Michael from PocketNow comparing the Nokia Lumia 900 vs the HTC OneX. This is presented as the two best alternatives to the iPhone. I found the comparison to be very fair. He’s also got an excellent speaking tone, no?

Michael says that even though on paper the Lumia seems less capable, on day to day usage his experience is more fluid. However, Androids by the day are getting stronger, with more power to cut the obvious lags. One of the main things that you can say about WP/Lumia is that the experience is of a high standard across the board. The 710 is snappy like the 800 and the 900. Different price tags, but all fluid. BTW, it is hard to notice lags if you’re not used to a very fast device. Until then, they seem fine (and that’s ok) but once you get used to the responsiveness, the lags do become annoying.

Windows Phone is pretty elementary at first. But don’t make the mistake of conflicting simplicity with stupidity

900′s Camera concerns me as these aren’t carrying off what is expected of Nokia/CarlZeiss. It looks great based on the samples we’ve seen but it has to be at Nokia’s standards, no? It is in part something WP related, but even N9 is of course no where near what we have come to expect from N8. The only thing that can redeem Nokia in the camera world again is letting the 808′s reputation speak for Nokia. The N8 did this for a while and that’s why for a long time, we heard tech bloggers praise the CZ Nokia cameras before ever using it.

BTW, I just wanted to add that WP works wonderfully with google mail and google calendar. They work amazingly well. Sign in and instant sync with mail/contacts/calendar. It’s not just for people who use hotmail. (I have that too. My sister and mum have Live and Yahoo accounts – all work fine).

The HTC has stepped up in design as it takes cues from the N9/900 with a polycarbonate body and a moulded screen with curved edges. Clearly, a winning design by Nokia which is ‘inspiring’ others and not the cheap, nothing special plastic it is accused to be (ElMu). Michael’s point that 900 ‘also’ has polycarbonate made me want to shout ‘noooo, HTC is the ‘Also’ haha’

We have heard many say that they dislike tiles & its kind of the 1st thing we see when we switch on a Lumia.

How about if a provision is made of one more screen (home screen) or say Nokia makes it for its range of Windows Phone ?

So its like when you unlock or power-on a Lumia what you see is a Wonderful homescreen with a Beautiful background & some essential things like Battery, Network, A sexy clock & a basic calling function (etc). You swipe right .. you go to the ‘Live Tiles’ section & from there the orginal WP starts.

Wont this add to the beauty of WP ?

    • senshi says:

No. People who hate the tiles mostly haven’t actually used a WP phone, those who have for extended periods of time loves the tiles, they are informative without information overload.

Things like battery and network is there when it requires attention – like low battery and no network the icons will be there constantly – otherwise it is out of the way to reduce clutter – this is the whole “simplicity but not stupid” design. If it doesn’t need your attention it should stay out of the way. There’s already a giant clock on the lock screen so another giant clock widget is completely redundant and unnecessary.

The only thing I want in WP is the N9 Meego style clock/minor notification sleep screen, that would really add to the usefulness of the OS.

        +1
and double tap to unlock :)

      • Viipottaja says:

tend to agree. never really understood why one needs to look at/see the network streght and batter 24/7, all the time. :)

clock is also ther permanently on the home screen.

live tiles are growing on me more and more. having favorite contacts with their pictures there makes it look quite nice although might be nice to be able to select the animations myself (but I realise it might get a little tricky to implement in an easy way – I guess in the “arrange tiles” mode, as do some other tiles like the picture hub with the favorite pics rolling there calmly. the people hub tile is a little too busy/active for my liking. ability to pin almost any thing/any view to the homescreen is also nice.

still, there is a slot perhaps for something to appear when swiping from the left in the tile view – perhaps task switcher like on the W8 tablet version…. that would be nice, but would not work in the apps as they are now as the panoramas rotate back infinitely.

      • Deep Space Bar says:

that’s an assumption….i have used wp7 my best friend has the HTC hd7 -_____- not fun after a day of use and it’s boring but colorful

        • senshi says:

One day is not enough to get live tiles.

Try one week – watch as the live tiles of your friends gets updated as they upload pictures, or someone you follow on twitter post something, the tiles are really alive and constantly changing, literally a surprise everyday. Boring is never a problem for live tiles.

          • Reonhato says:

It is not what the tiles can do that they hate. It is the actual “look” of it against the plain background. A lot of people got spoiled with wallpapers and changeable themes so I can’t really blame them for that.

            • deep space bar says:

SPOILED……..ARE YOU SERIOUS…..I’VE BEEN CHANGING THING THEMES AND WALLPAPERS for the past 7 years…..DON’t you DARE CALL ANY of use NON WP7 users spoiled

it’s not our fault wp7 is upto par with basic customization cause of it’s UI

              • deep space bar says:

                *the

              • Reonhato says:

I don’t see why you took offense in the term spoiled. Is it only a negative term where you are from?

I know, I customize my phones everytime when I was a bit younger. Even S40s can change themes. I’m contented with just changing wallpapers now though. Normally placing pictures of love ones.

So calm down, I’ve been cuztomizing old Nokia screens in the mid to late 90s by placing transparancy film with a picture in between the monochrome screen and glass. Just to have some sort of wallpaper there.

            • senshi says:

Actually I don’t get that at all, with how big the tiles are there is no way you can see the background, it’s a complete non-issue to me.

              • Reonhato says:

It is the same case with iphones. I don’t know of they started it or not. You can only have a somewhat visible wallpaper in a lock screen as the main screen is just filled with icons.

My point is as crazy it may sound. If you are in asia (for example) and ride a public transport, I notice people like placing pictures on their homescreen ay it be their favorite car/anime or just family members. It is the first thing they see when they use the phone.

I understand the point of windows phone and even the widget filled androids is to have all that useful information on the home screen. It is just a lot of people use their phone differently and some don’t care for it. I see android users with clean homescreens. Not a widget in sight. All I see are pictures.

            • Jill says:

You got it right exactly .. the damn Plain Background just don’t hit the Bell. Nothing against the tiles .. i just mentioned ‘Swipe right & you go to the Tiles section’.

The Plain Tiles just kills the enthusiasm of most of the users.

See if you think further .. N9 also misses the home screen & i also wanted the same with it.

              • James says:

You CAN change the background of the 3 home-screens in the N9 now.
Easiest way is w/an app called Home Screen Settings IIRC.

One thing I’m hoping for next…
Is the option for the multitasking home-screen to disappear when apps aren’t open.
But I doubt it’ll be possible, due to that aspect of the UX being closed.

          • deep space bar says:

how is it a surprise if it update via widgets as well :/

            • senshi says:

In Android’s facebook/twitter widgets you have to touch them and scroll through the posts to see the update. On WP7 I setup a twitter group live tile of a handful of people I follow and pin it on the live screen and it updates by itself – no touching required. The pictures for the picture hub is updated randomly, the People live tile randomly display photos of your contacts etc, it is never static like most Android widgets which goes to sleep until the next update interval or you interact with it.

              • deep space bar says:

no you don’t XD not all widgets are the same and that refresh is from Nokia’s widgets and not android….nice atempt buddy but lie isn’t gonna help

              • me says:

And shows what? A single tweet that changes every now and then?

How much time do you actually spend staring at the home screen of your Windows phone? Sure, if you’re in love with it it’s probably understandable, but you’d be much more productive just using full-blown apps to see new updates than polling your homescreen to do its thing.

The point Microsoft aimed at was making the home screen more “lively”, yes. But nothing comes free in this world, and so doesn’t this decision. Live tiles are certainly not a full replacement for widgets – even the larger one is relatively small (on a 10 cm screen at least) so they made the decision of not allowing one to interact with them. You can only tap them, to launch things. Like launcher icons.

However, they are not small like launcher icons are, because you couldn’t show any recognizable animation in that space (or, at least, you wouldn’t get a recognizable tile look if it was animated and that small). BUT they take up space way more than the launcher icons they are, just for gimmick’s sake. That means a lot of scrolling (although that’s prevalent in Windows Phone anyway). Do you gain anything?

No. Take a news widget and tile for example: unlike a news widget, a news tile can only show so much (little) actual information that it’s just not worth squinting at it. Just launch the app. And boom, all you’ve got is an oversized, glorified launcher icon.

Btw, Windows Phone has some of the most retarded ads I’ve ever seen in my life. Here in Finland they run one that goes something like this:

“It’s got these live tiles. Look how they move and change. And the finger isn’t even touching them. Now it is. *drags a tile around*”

If that’s the most you got to show (a Facebook icon spinning inside a tile) to the potential customers, can you *honestly* say your surprised from a less-than-one-percent global marketshare?

    • Grendell says:

Even something like this would have made the L800/L900 a lot more palatable to people who didn’t like tiles so much:

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewvcKFwtQGE

      Gorgeous!

      • Viipottaja says:

Do you mean the custom tile backgrounds? there are of course of tons of apps to do that, but I suspect it won’t come natively.

    • Hypnopottamus says:

Not sure if you’ve ever used a WP,Jill, but what you are describing IS what happens (minus the widgets). Once you turn on a WP device, you are in the lockscreen where the background is a customizable wallpaper.

      • Hypnopottamus says:

I should add, from the lockscreen you see the time, date, next calendar entry, and any notifications you missed (calls, texts/chats, emails) in addition to network and battery meter.

Effectively, adding another screen AFTER the lockscreen “with a Beautiful background & some essential things like Battery, Network, A sexy clock & a basic calling function (etc)” is rather pointless.

  2. Janne says:

I think the myth needs to end. Nokia cameras has not been up to “Nokia standards” ever since Symbian^3 came along, with the notable exception of N8 of course (and now 808). The EDoF cameras in C7, E7, Belles and the small cameras in N9 and the Lumias are all quite crap.

Nokia did well with cameras when they were/are big enough. But other manufacturers are getting much better results from small sensors than Nokia is.

Nokia needs to catch up here.

    • Jay Montano says:

Sorry By Nokia standards I meant from the likes of

      N90
      N95
      N82
      N86
      N8
      808

Hmm…yeah, not as many as I would have liked to have put as clearly Nokia wedges in a lot of crap in between. Amongst S^3, you’re right. Pretty much just N8 and now 808 :/

Size is a good point. When the phones are made slim, Nokia seems to lose out. To keep ‘slim’ they had to resort to EDoF. And those phones weren’t that slim anyways.

    • Grendell says:

      +1
And it’s not like they can’t. The N950 has a 12 megapixel module (limited to 8mpx) shoehorned into the lower half. That lower half (based on pictures) doesn’t seem as fat as the N9. Can someone with both phones confirm this?

    • Bloob says:

I wonder how much of it is due to post-processing algorithms which Nokia AFAIK doesn’t use.

  3. Aliqudsi says:

Probably the two best looking phones on the market (of course the 900 should be in white)- for me the optimum REALISTIC successor to the 900 would be

    -same screen size (4.3)
    -HD 720P screen
-(whatever processor is req. for Win 8)
-12 MP camera (that seems to be the norm now, no need for it to have the monster optic sensor of the N8/808 just a decent aperture with a proper lens)- maybe PureView, but I would prefer the Pureview lumia to be a separate phone
-Some of the features from Meego mainly tap to unlock and an amoled clock screensaver (or anything that can show notifications at a glance).
-Design I’d like it to the same but then it might become an overused design??

*Also for the record this is why the Stormtrooper is glossy- http://i.imgur.com/9UDI6.jpg the matte finish of the One X picks up stains from jeans and other items.

  4. louisloh says:

Great and fair comparison. But I must say, as a Google Mail, Calendar and Contacts user, these services work flawlessly with Windows Phone as well. Well integrated and very smooth performance all over. Only gripe is Google search, which is displaced by Bing search, which isn’t that bad tbh. But Google search is definitely missed.

  5. ms.nokia says:

    live tiles or active windows?

they should not be called tiles,
they should be called active windows, because they give u a window view into any activity the app does,

    no windows pun intended

    my 2 cents worth…..

  6. Harangue says:

One thing that really bothers me with the 900 is the size. The thing is just so big for the screen it has. The One X is almost the same size yet it packs 0.4″ wider screen.

Nokia really need to work on making smaller bezels and thus make smaller phones relative to their screen size. I do want a 4 inch plus screen but not at the cost of having a phone as big as the 900. Especially when a 4.7 inch device is equally large. (Although a bit higher by 6mm but equally wide)

  7. SaviorXX9 says:

The HTC is garbage. I went to go check it out and I was disappointed by the bloatware and cartoonish skin(s). I find it very sad that Androind needs dual cores in order for it to run smooth like my Samsung Focus S, or an iPhone. No thanks. I’ll stick to my Focus S. Been using it for a week and I’m in love. This is coming from using an iPhone 4 for 3 straight years. People who say that WP7 is boring is a fucking moron (like Deep Space Bar), and a fanboy of some OS.

Good job, Microsoft. I can’t wait to see what Apollo will bring!

    • Bharat Justa says:

      :O

      Direct hit to bar! :D

    • BellGo says:

“People who say that WP7 is boring is a fucking moron (like Deep Space Bar), and a fanboy of some OS.”

And you clearly are not “a fanboy of some OS.” Instead you observe things objectively, and debate calmly and fairly, never offending people for no reason.

It is good that people like you still exist. =)

  8. jcar302 says:

He is so right about the simplicity of the 900.
After a month with the 900, every other phone seems complex to me, with no reason for it.

I won’t be going back to maemo or symbian anytime soon and i don’t even like using my eee pad anymore (prefer the simplicity of my hp touchpad).

Processor power is over rated, hardly anyone ever actually uses games that require quad cores.

If the L900 played flash video, i’d consider it the absolute perfect phone.

Everyone complains about the tiles, i used to be one of them, that’s until i put some real time in with the phone, now i love them.

    • Luisito says:

you’ve bring to me something that is flying over my head from time to time… People don’t wanna a smartphone, they want a phone with a big screen, and easy to use everyday… reliable of course. It you’re and engineer you must look to symbian, android or something more open than iOs or WP, if you’re and average user, live for fb, twitter, web browsing and your definition of apps are mostly related to games then your way is WP (if you love Nokia)
