N9Apps: Eyrie – Music Detector

| May 24, 2012 | 31 Replies

Eyrie start up

Many have wanted Shazam to come to MeeGo-Harmattan, and in true Maemo Community fashion, devs make alternatives. This is exactly what Eyrie is. Eyrie will listen to what music you’re playing, and after recording a 30 second sound clip, detects what the song is. It uses the EchoNest library, an open-source way of detecting a song’s “fingerprint”.

Now, it’s still an early version, but seems promising. Its quick to launch, and is quick to tell you if it has failed or give you a result. The database for results can only be as large as EchoNest, so hopefully it will get better.

The dev has posted a video of it working (see below). I tried it myself, comparing it to Shazam on my 800, using the same songs, and it got 1/4, where Shazam got 4/4. Admittedly though, Shazam has been around for a lot longer, and has had the time to improve its library. It’s still a great app, and it’s good to see developers take the initiative to bring these sort of apps the platform.

The app can be downloaded from the developer’s web site. Make sure you have allowed installation of 3rd party apps

    Neat! I wasn’t aware the N9 didn’t have Shazam.

I prefer Midomi/SoundHound as it can even find music by ‘humming’ and in some phones, it presents lyrics. It’s much more accurate. I like the inbuilt music match feature in the Lumia – mostly because it’s quick. If I hear a song I want to know the name to, I can quickly press that button.

This at least is a good option to have for N9 users – cheers for the info!

    • Michael Faro-Tusino says:

I prefer Midomi as well, but its not on WP is it?

      • Aliqudsi says:

I prefer the Bing music search to both though- takes alot less than 60 seconds- and has even found tracks in arabic.

        • Hypnopottamus says:

I’ve used SoundHound and Shazam on my Android phone. Bing music search on my Lumia 900 seemed to find music faster and was able to find more obscure music. There have been things I’ve not been able to identify using SoundHound or Shazam that Bing gets. I never thought I’d say this, but I’m kind of sold on Bing. Overall, at least on WP, Bing services is so much better than services on Android. I like how Bing services is all accessible from 1 location/app.

      • Jay Montano says:

Midomi is soundhound. Just new name.

    • AGui says:

You can use Midomi.com on the N9 with Firefox and Flash. It is not as good as a real app, but it can be useful.

    • Grazy says:

Just emailed shazam, they have given me a case number. I Asked Them If they are likely to port it to the N9. Fingers crossed, not that this app isn’t great!

      • James says:

        @Grazy

I think Shazam have stated clearly that they’ve no intention to.
I can’t recall the thread this was mentioned though…
Midomi (SoundHound) have promised a N9 client for some time:

“Thank you for being a part of the SoundHound community! Unfortunately, as you mentioned, we currently do not have a compatible version for Meego, though we hope to have one in the future. Would you like to be notified when this is available? If so, please let me know. In the meantime, you can use our search feature on the web at http://www.midomi.com, or else use one of our Sound Hound compatible devices.”

Some have emailed them & that’s typically the response they get.
We probably need to get some final clarity out of them, as it’s starting to feel like a canned response.

I have been browsing the Nokia Store for N9 apps recently and I’m actually surprised of how many useful and great apps are there. It may not have millions of apps, but almost all of the ones available are high quality.

    I can’t wait to get my N9!

    • Michael Faro-Tusino says:

Yeah, you’re right. The app store is small, yet it has lots of great apps, and they are of good quality. Not to mention, then there are the apps on sites like TMO, FMC, Apps For MeeGo and N9-Apps, that aren’t published to the store yet. Imagine if Nokia had made MeeGo THE platform for high-end, back when the N900 was a success. Who knows just how many apps there would be, and if Nokia would ever have been in its current position of losing market share to Samsung and Android

      • Silthice says:

That was the road that was planned back in 2009 with Qt apps plus pureview. The transition time was 2009-2011. Nokia should have getting all the fruit starting with N9. Well, before everything is ruined of course with 360 turn that lead to dead end road….

        • incognito says:

Sorry to be punctual, but Nokia made a 180° turn, that’s the main problem… 360° turn would have landed them on the same road…

          • Silthice says:

I mean 360 cause they return back to the initial position of where Nokia start the transition plan in 2009 to Qt and MeeGo but instead of that they start with a failing transition to WP and WP as 3rd ecosystem thing…

          • RJB says:

Your geometry is correct but you (and I) are being pedantic!

    • DesR85 says:

Not bad. Wished they did the same for the 6700 Slide as the apps compatible for that phone are mostly useless, save for some themes I downloaded which include Belle icons. That was the reason why I have not installed any app on that phone from the time I bought it until now.

  3. N9Rox says:

how to install if it is not in the nokia store, after I download I get error msg

  4. John Brown says:

Not at all sure why shazam.still have not put out a MeeGo client seeing as the symbian version has been written in qt for well over 2 years.
have tried this, not that great tbh, would work better if it used shazam’s db, which enables API access

    • BENJIMOLA says:

Because they put it out on other nokia phones… they don’t have strength to start making one app for 3 different nokia phones if not 4.

      • John Brown says:

Ermm if stuff is coded in Qt, the x-platform is actually quite easy. You just need to optimise for the screen resolution and Meego UI and recompile the rest of the code. Viola, you have a .deb file that works on the N9.

  5. James says:

Thanks for pointing this one out Michael!
I had absolutely no idea that it existed.

  6. mee-gone says:

N9 sucks, No official apps, always have to wait for some half-assed alternative.

N9 and meego-harmattan should not have been launched instead of creating such problems for the paying customers.

  7. Partyintheback says:

Every song that I have tried to scan with this has failed.
