Nokia’s PureView – Gizmodo gets it
It wasn’t that long ago after the Nokia 808 PureView launch that Gizmodo (Australia) completely missed the point on what PureView was about – feeling it was marketing gimmick and that Nokia were simply ‘redefining the stupidphone’. But they were quick to admit they were wrong and just yesterday after trying it out first hand appeared to be blown away.
Gizmodo is on a roll right now trumpeting great technology when they hear about it, in a piece that thankfully takes the time to explain what PureView is about.

If Nokia can deliver results that are worth it, I think people can be willing to compromise on size. I mean, look at the SG Note. Obscene at first launch but now defining this ‘phablet’ for people who want that additional functionality in their phone. Why not have a slightly thicker phone at one end to always have that amazing camera and capture all those priceless memories with you?
Gizmodo notes that Nokia will be making slimmer devices with PureView. not necessarily in this combination (41MP) but the same underlying technology to deliver the highest quality in mobile imaging.
Here’s to Nokia, truly trying to deliver innovation that matters to the consumer. It’s not about just having bigger numbers, but really it’s all about giving the consumer the best audio/visual experiences – the highest photo quality – improvements where it counts.

Cheers steelicon for the heads up!

Absolutely amazing. Go Nokia!
I still dont like the fact they bashed Symbian so much in it, and also pretty much doomed the 808 to failure by saying no one will buy it on “that platform”
Big blogs like this need to realize that speaking like that of any product instantly puts people off the product.
The review what ok, and yes the camera detailing was good, however I still hate the bashing, we know Symbian is old, we know its dying…let it dye going out with a bang with this device.
Rant over as you say
+1
The bashing from Gizmodo and Engadget has to be in some part to blame for Symbians demise. Only in some part, as the lions share of the blame is years of Nokia mis-management, capped off by Elops incompetence in handling the move to WP.
The biggest reason is Nokia’s inability to keep Symbian competitive after the N95 was launched. That was probably the last product where Symbian was competitive. Soon after that Nokia was forced to compete with lower prices and building all that weird stuff which led to those well known disasters and finally Kallasvuo losing his job.
This is very sad indeed.
I’m surprised Nokia even bother giving review handsets to gizmodo/cnet/engadget. They kept stomping nokia in the nuts when they were not doing so well and are now di**riding them because they put an os that appeals to the US market on modded N9 hardware.
Slow clap please – these arrogant fools really think they are journalists when they have their head so far up corporate batties that they cant see the sunshine.
I just really like the idea of nut stomping
You know, it’s the Symbian OS in that handset. They told earlier that Symbian was crap. Why would they change their mind about Symbian if Nokia added a high res camera to a new phone? Just that camera with those 38 Mpix won’t make Symbian any better.
If someone wants that camera he or she is going to buy it despite the Symbian OS lurking under the hood. Surely there is few brave dinosaurs who think the Symbian OS is a great piece of software, but mos buyers will just tolerate the Symbian OS.
Now what’s the problem with speaking out about Symbian?
I am one of those brave dinosaurs. Incidentally, I am an electronics engineer, I design electronic systems and I work with embeddes OS’s. I also own an Android device (a Samsung Galaxy Tab) and I used an iPhone here in Italy before most Italians heard about it, let alone see one. Having said this, I still prefer Symbian (Belle) over Android and iOS, since I find it superior in everything except the number of apps.

Nice.
Except that Gizmodo.au article was lifted from the gizmodo UK site …
Commentards will be out in force on all of them in due course.
Sad news on the phone itself though, a number of retailers here in India are now saying that the ETA is 2nd week June at the earliest.
I don’t know why but I’ve a sneaky feeling that Nokia have shown them a sneak preview of WP based PureView (which I assume will be based on the N8′s sensor) which would hit the market along with WP8 later this year and they are excited about that. Or it may be just me.
PureView with the sensor of the N8? Really? What next? PureView junior with a 1.3 Mpix sensor?
Many in Nokia call N8′s sensor a PV-lite.. It can use PV tech to get a better 3\5MP pic.
Also, One of the info I got was Nokia was trying a WP with the N8′s sensor & PV tech.
The problem isn’t the size….it’s Symbian. The compromise is that they will stomach Symbian just for the camera really. I myself contemplated it until I realized my phone currently has a 1280×720 resolution as opposed to the 640×360 that the 808 is coming with.
I agree with this, not really the resolution so much but Symbian in general. To me it is not fun to use. I might get the 808 to take on photo trips but there is no way I can use it as my daily phone until it gets a good OS.
So you are one of those consumers interested in about taking good pictures but revolted against the Symbian OS?
Exactly. The issue is not with Symbian itself but with what Nokia did with it. A platform with potential that was squandered basically. I do admire all the old school stuff that smart symbian phones do but the newer smartphones cannot, but it is not enough. A shame really.
with far superior user experience.
In the end I don’t NEED pureview, I like it, but I get good enough pictures
I am quite happy with my N8 running on Belle, and doing so many stuff on it… I don’t leave home without it. Symbian is quite ample enough. And if possible, I take along my Ipad (mostly at work or for doing work) . So, I am an Ipad-N8 power user on a Symbian-iOS optimal coupling. Soon ipad808 to be..
Great to see Nokia making more and more friends in the blogosphere! Once we get past Symbian, these guys will be singing the praise fully…
Good luck and speed, 808 PureView! A great product!
+1!
+2!
Well, I can’t afford 808 but, I can afford Sony Alpha Nex C3.
And I think that Nex C3 can beat 808!
You are wasting your money on that alpha system ..
Nex C3 is the cheapest MILC camera + APS-C
Sized sensor!
And, today I don’t have money for 808. And tomorrow I won’t have money for lenses. So, I’m gonna stick with kit lens plus an adapter and a 50mm prime lens
that’s it… EAT CROW GIZMODO!
Decent enough for a “dumbphone.” Really? Can it be dumber than iPoo or Mongoloid. I wonder? iPoo is a piece of junk for Nicki Minaj, Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton stupid users and Mongoloid is just a copy of Symbian. Don’t post comments from these dumbass sites, please, we all know now it’s all about China&India&Dubai markets, what’s important, and where the money is.
Symbian is not a dumbphone but it sure has a reputation of one. That’s why it’s sales have been collapsing.
