Weekend Watch: Nokia 808 vs Nokia Lumia 800 vs Nokia E7 (size) [Belle FP1 v112.020.0308.01.01)
A few things to take from this video. First, towards the end you can see a very useful size comparison. The 808 PureView doesn’t look to be all that thick (except for the ginormous sensor bit).
Against the E7, it looks more pocketable.
Something else to take note of is the Belle FP1 version 112.020.0308.01.01, dated 05-11-2012

The size comparisons really alleviate any concerns I had remaining about the sizing; its not huge like how some were obviously exaggerating it to be (janne)
It’s not huge. It’s just about twice as thick as the competition. For some peoples that matters, for some not.
It’s roughly about 3/4″ as are some laptops. Now, it has also roughly 30% more weight compared to the competition. Not that much but but you can feel the difference very well.
no its nowhere near twice as thick…. (4.5mm thicker than the 4s 5.6mm thicker than the SGS3) unless you’re including the hump…
its more 1/2″ than 3/4″
I expect those blogs/journalists who have only seen the 808 in pictures to exaggerate the size as it looks huge.. or those who are anti nokia/symbian to do the same
certainly we have the numbers to go by the sizing differences but actually seeing a comparison is far more telling
I don’t know how can you go denying the phone is huge. Plus 17mm was really thick in 2008 standards and it’s even more these days. 17mm will make a difference, no matter if it is the camera hump as you are putting the phone to your pocket. Weight is also on the top.
Granted i don’t care, but of course it will be a problem to some.
the phones 13.9mm plain and simple
i can certainly see it being an issue for some but not for me
and its absolutely well beyond the point i was making…
takes up faaaaar less space than my keys
The 808 is 17.95mm thick. That’s pretty close to 3/4″. Sure, you can measure it from some other part of the phone to make it appear thinner but it still won’t fit into 13.9mm because it’s 17.95mm.
Of course the hump is included because it’s a part of the phone.
good thing no other website thinks the same way as you (not even the hater blogs)
Ok really, i don’t either care as i’am getting the phone, but you do understand the problem here, right?
Phone is 17.9mm when you put it in to your pocket, not 13mm. It doesn’t matter what website says, use your head.
It’s just ignorance if someone thinks a device 17.95mm thick is not 17.95mm thick.
the camera is far better than a point and shoot digital camera.. and i dont think my Sony digicam will ever fit in my pocket. but this will definitely fit in a pocket. I will keep the screen towards me.. it hardly matters. i dont have any problem.
The 808 certainly is the best camera there is for point and shoot, quality-wise. It has a huge sensor that can be even used to simulate low end zoom. That’s great achievement!
It’s not huge camera, but it’s a huge mobile phone. If you want the best camera for a mobile phone and you are ok with the size of 17.95mm, you should go and get it!
It is not as thick as you would expect it to be. Surely doesnt feels like it but it is still a bigaquare in your pocket. Go and choose for yourself: 4,7 inch but slim like a HTC One XL or a “fat” but small Nokia 808?
It’s not huge. It’s about the right size. Other phones are just too small or slim IMO. Well except Samsung Note and the new Galaxy.
I hate the too small size of the modern phones and welcome the bigger thickness of 808. It will fit in my hand much better than all those over slim phones.
Hugeness is really just a matter of opinion, personal preference. Some people have small hands and others big, so there’s no one-size-fits-all.
how does it compare to the N900? that was a chunky phone! but i got used to it pretty quickly and it didn’t bother me that much! it was also a pretty heavy phone!
I’ve had a Nokia E7 for a few weeks, and this does indeed make the 808 feel not as big as some of the websites were indicating.
The 808 looks pretty nice sizewise.
Does anyone know if it uses micro SIM?
it uses microsim, same with n9.
but is it true that it has polycarbonate body? & if it ever has, are the colors the same from the inside & outside? i mean, if i cut the polycarbonate body, the color of the section & of the outside are the same? because i worry that all of the 3 variants (black, red & white) use the same color & only on the outside they differ from each other, i.e. the outside is just painted to produce the 3 variants.
No, they are not “painted” .. Solid Color..
ok. thanks. then no one can prevent me from buying this..
From what I have seen the plastic is not painted but tinted and like the Lumia fully coloured.
Great to see comparisons against E7.. Although the Screen is same size as E7, it is indeed more “pocketable” Looks great and will be much lighter than E7.
how the hell is it much lighter than an E7? its just a difference of 9 grams… duh… atleast check the specs before u just talk about sumthing mate… mistakes happen, but u did a blunder buddy…
its not even 9… its a mere 7 grams..
That was bit harsh.. Either way, its lighter and after having the E7 for 2 years, the weight wont worry me..
So N8 is also get Belle v112.20.0308 like E7?
112.020 is a version of 808 SW
If you think the E7′s heavy, you’d better start working out on those forearms!
The size comparison really helped me make my mind, i”m buying one for sure. Currently i have the E7 and i actually like the solid feel. I have only one concern, i hope that after a while the plastic won”t start to squeek. Sure, some phones are slimmer but that does not necessarily mean better, because it must feel good in the hand.
It has been mentioed by people who have used the phone that it feels very solid, like example Engadget. Also looking at the phone it looks like really ergonomic compared to even E7 for example. Also mentioned on previews.
That said i haven’t yet held the phone so time will tell.
Wont squeek. Battery cover is within a frame, so go for it!
The comparison shows that it’s more pocket-able than E7 even it’s somewhat similar to Lumia 800 though it has .3 inch of extra screen and 5 times more camera resolution. Haters will always hate but it’s a nice and compact phone with decent specifications.
Well, not really compact. Its pocketable, but the buldge stands out.
Hope Belle FP1 and 2 has a whole lot of compatible hacks and mods. Heh.
I don’t get it, J. After close observation of video, especially the stills above, it becomes quite clear that 808PV is just a little bit, 1-2mm taller than L800. At the same time, it does seem pretty much shorter, atleast 4-5mm than E7.
How come then Nokia official specs, even gsmarena too, are providing conflictingly different fact?
http://www.developer.nokia.com/Devices/Device_specifications/808_PureView/
http://www.developer.nokia.com/Devices/Device_specifications/E7-00/
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4577&idPhone2=3545
According to both, E7 is 123.7mm tall, 808PV is 123.9mm taller while L800 is at 116.5mm. Considering above video/stills 808PV (slimmer at waist than either sets) obviously stands really in-between and not any other way around.
Anyway, its been a joy to have been with original finnish-made N82 Black for the past 4+ years… and resisting the seductive N8 (accidental top & bottom-cuts were really off-putting for me among other abominations). 808PV does seem more like a re-incarnation of N82 than a successor of N8.
God I wish I could somehow bring N82′s Stereo speaker pair to 808PV. That’s the only deepest gripe I’ll be having, but lets wait & see the quality of mono.
wow.. congrats to you man
4 years out of the n82 ? Great to hear that I am not the only one who doesn’t update every 5 months. And ya, that is a great upgrade from the n82..
LOL. Props to you too Sir. Yup! I’m deeply content with my N82. After all it was one the first Nokia sets to get Dual Core/CPU, most people aren’t aware of this fact. (http://www.developer.nokia.com/Devices/Device_specifications/N82/)
I guess when people aren’t satisfied by the overall/inclusive experience, they probably keep buying new sets out of frustration & frenzy. Of course, not applicable in all cases & circumstances.
But the world ages, so do all things along with it. Touchscreen came, took world by storm, Nokia delivered unfinished N8. Never really liked it, despite its advanced hardware, had really a number of downgrades over N82. Then everybody got the chance to finally vent their anger when Steve (A.A.S.) asked (he raised the voice of sanity though admittedly it was all too late and didn’t matter at that stage) I did my part:

I’m glad 808PV has scored many of those 10 points.
Hi peeps,
I had the chance to play around with the Nokia 808 PureView – as you have seen in my YouTube-video. Although my article is written in German, you may find the included pictures very useful.
Especially the N8 vs. 808 comparison is pretty interesting: The N8 does nearly match the Pureviews quality. If you are on a low budget, then go for the N8! The body is made of plastic and feels cheap, but sturdy.
All in all a desirable phone, that is if you like Symbian. Cheers!
Ooops, missed the link

(maybe you can join my comments, Jay?!)
I still don’t get this “the thinner the better” nonsense. What’s the point of having 7mm device, when it’s so wide and tall (because of these huge displays) that u can’t operate it properly with one hand ? Isn’t it ridiculous that tech blogs prefer devices which can’t be operated comfortably over those which are bit thicker, but ergonomically shaped ? Btw, i had 808 prototype in my hands, and while it’s on heavier side, it fits perfectly in hand. Much better than say SGS2 or iP4.
Mobile – its compact n easy to handle with one hand. SGS2/Note n others are to big to handle and keep it in our pockets.Nokia is still producing mobiles which are compact n easy to use n carry.
