Rumours: Belle FP2/Donna/PR3.0 coming in September?

| May 31, 2012 | 53 Replies

Just take this ‘trusted source’ rumour with a truck of salt. It would be awesome if true but currently we must remember this is just a rumour.

Supposedly a major update is coming in the form of Belle FP2, aka PR3.0, aka Donna.

    Thats a great news. :)
But source link is dead, please fix it.

  2. stylinred says:

the (SW Approval) likely means “pending software approval” and we know what that means months and months of delay

    • ICEman says:

really? Belle FP1 was actually compiled on the week 13, available a week and a bit later. That’s totally in line with what was predicted ;) So expect FP2 to hit 701/700/603/808 right about Nokia World ;) That’s exactly 6 months after we fist saw Belle FP1 – that’s 1 major release of symbian every 6 months, as promised by Nokia

      • MoritzJT says:

Now for the AVKON overhaul in Belle Refresh, let’s expect it and may hell break loose if we don’t get it. As there’s absolutely no technical reason for us not to get it ;-)

        Cheers

        • ICEman says:

belle Refresh isn’t that much of an update, just some apps (Nokia Mix radio for example) and back-ported things from Belle FP1. Coming really soon :)

          • MoritzJT says:

And after that!? I really despise them if they go for the theme and UI fragmentation route! Why the hell!? If it’s just a human resources issue, okay, but if we don’t get the minimal UI refresh, what’s the use of the Update!? To bring back functionality we had with Anna!? More Widgets? ;-)

At least some core apps like Nokia Music and such come for us, and we’ll someday get the new Music Player. But what about Dolby, are the old DSPs capable of it?!

            Cheers

            • ICEman says:

It is a human resource issue.. fewer and fewer Symbian devs left

              • Sachin Verma says:

Thats true, Piracy has almost killed symbian. This is one of the major reasons.

                • MoritzJT says:

He wasn’t talking about the one man shows and how much piracy hurt major sales, which isn’t that bad after all, but about those working at accenture, be it 120 or less.

              • MoritzJT says:

Well opening up a bit for the community to contribute would be acceptable ;-)

Though never going to happen, they hate their communities :D

As long as we’ll get it with the FP2 backport, I’m fine, but in the end, both need to look the same again!

Do you think that will happen?

                • ICEman says:

no, I think refresh is the last “major”-ish update for N8/C7… But, I don’t have any info on Symbian roadmap so that’s my personal opinion. After all, we haven’t seen any official feature list for Belle Refresh. My guess is that if new keyboard makes its way to Belle FP2, it will get backported, but that’s about it

                  • MoritzJT says:

But without sources we cannot backport SysAP and all the UI tweaks! That’ll make theming a mess! That’s not okay!

                    • Carbontubby says:

Symbian is bloody finished. Finished as in dead. :(

There are still plenty of bugs left unfixed, features removed and never put back in, but it’s the end of the road for Symbian. Multiple Exchange account support? System-wide email notifications? Heck, even proper multi-disc album handling in the music player?

                  • lordstar says:

Hey Iceman, would you happen to know if the Nokia 500 will be able to get a belle refresh update too? Fingers crossed. Hehe I hope it also contains minor over clocking and performance improvements.

If dsmobile is right and he probably is, belle fp2 will just be for the 808, 701, 700, and 603 right? No more new devices planned for the launch of belle fp2..

                    • ICEman says:

I don’t have info on new devices, but I’d be REALLY surprised to see any new Symbian phones. Belle FP2 will be launched in some sort of “hey look, we’re keeping our promises” way (to stop people thinking Nokia won’t support its current customers)

                    • twinklestar1792 says:

Ya they keep updating but in FP1/FP2 there is no major updates for N8 and other 2nd generation S^3 models.

          • lordstar says:

Coming really soon eh? Like in the coming days? HAha or weeks?

      • stylinred says:

belle was meant to come out a year before it did ;)

        • Ebon & Unicorn N9s says:

Ya it was… But setting up the Symbian Foundation, its slow pace of development & the later merging into Nokia delayed those..

    • Sachin Verma says:

I think it means a beta version, which will be first tested by nokia people and could be delayed for us. :)
Its confirmed that it will be not available for download in September.

  3. Deep Space Bar says:

they need to stop filling the phones with bloatware

  4. Silthice says:

    What is poken nfc?
anyone can elaborate that in details?
    cause there’s no symbianappaday/maemoappaday/meegoappaday

    • MoritzJT says:

      “cause there’s no symbianappaday/maemoappaday/meegoappaday”

Yeah, far too few people having the interest and resources for it on this blog :-(

However, Poken NFC is the app for the Poken service, check it out online ;-)

      • Janne says:

Actually, this site does have the N9 apps series. But it is a hobby site, limited things they can do.

        • Jay Montano says:

Thanks Janne. Yup, that’s here. http://mynokiablog.com/category/applications/n9apps/

There’s also one for Symbian apps but we have demoed many many more apps in the past without that tag so it may be more difficult to find (though most are incompatible now anyway)

Prob no point showing the Maemo 5 apps either.

I have always said that should any one wish to assist, do some demoes on other platforms then we’d love to feature it too. But for all those millions and millions of users, where are those app demoes?

          • MoritzJT says:

Oh, so I can make demoes, maybe a YT Vid and a few lines and you’ll publish it?! Same for excellent and unique themes?! I have quite a list there…

            • Jay Montano says:

Sure. You can see that every time I find a video of a new app for N9 or Symbian, I am instantly publishing it :) I search every day for new videos to share, specifically for N9/Symbian. I don’t do this for WP as I already have a backlog of apps to demo and I almost often 99% ignore WP app news unless it’s something I’d find significant.

You can send the tips to the usual place or direct to tips@….etc. :) Theme demoes/apps/app updates etc.

We can file them under MNB Reader Generated :)

              Cheers,

              J

          • Maybe says:

a single app in three different posts in a single day…

      • Jay Montano says:

I might not have been able to personally demo it but I have talked about it. It’s not like I’m ignoring it. And that is the truth, that unfortunately I don’t have the time for it. I am already stretching myself with a video review every day. They take time to use the app, time to record, time to process, time to upload, time to write it up. Consider doing this and maintaining the rest of the blog and maintaining a fair balance with non-Nokia stuff. It was, essentially, a mistake to start the project as an app a day but it was the commitment I made to myself. There is a target I have set and if I can I just want to reach it.

        • MoritzJT says:

Hey, I didn’t mean to criticize you! I know your resources are limited, I just meant to say, that from all the contributors here, no one else made such a commitment! I don’t expect it from anyone ;-)

  5. dss says:

The most interesting thing from that screenshot is “US embargo countries” … its amazing to me how that effects a software development project from Finland.

  6. James says:

This is great to hear, if true.

    • Paul Grenfell says:

Yeah just read that..”Google Inc on Thursday accused Microsoft Corp and Nokia of conspiring to use their patents against smartphone industry rivals, and said it has filed a formal complaint with the European Commission.”

  7. krustylicious says:

    looks as if:

Belle is the last major release of symbian.

Or they are just updating belle with feature packs. fp3 anyone.

Also sounds as if dual core porting has gone.

    • dansus says:

No high res screens, no dual core.. Shame if true.

    • manu says:

mostly enough updates are given by nokia to there s^3 devices by fp2,android phones wont get more than one major update sometimes not even that also.
And who the hell is gonna buy dualcore symbian with high res screen these days.its like buying a sportscar from a company which is going to shutdown.

    • ICEman says:

it’s not gone. It can’t be gone :) It was always there, along with high resolution screens support

      • Carbontubby says:

In the Symbian kernel and system libraries, maybe. In Series 60 and later UIs, definitely not. Otherwise we would have seen all this with the 808 which is most likely to be the last Symbian device.

  8. Paul Grenfell says:

Symbian has been absolutely abandoned in Australia. A real shame, because it was just getting good.

  9. Carbontubby says:

Looks like us suckers who bought the first-gen S^3 devices will have to support them ourselves… making our own apps, patches and custom firmware. It would be a lot easier if the sources were available.

As it is, I hold no hope at all for Symbian under Nokia. They should do what HP did with WebOS – acknowledge you can’t develop the OS further and open source it to let the community drive development.

    • Ebon & Unicorn N9s says:

I don’t think Nokia will follow HP in open sourcing the Symbian code-base especially with Belle FPs.

The first-gen S^3 devices will be getting a Belle Refresh update sometime this year (which includes parts of FP1 & FP2) and expect few updates after that for bugs\security fixes.

      • Carbontubby says:

Symbian has no value to Nokia as they’re only rolling out support updates for existing phones and nothing beyond the 808 is expected. There’s the Phoenix project that will develop WebOS further on existing and future hardware platforms. Maybe something similar could be done with Symbian if it’s open sourced, as it once was before.
