Google Accuses Nokia and Microsoft of mobile collusion, files antitrust complaint
Google, who purchased Motorola for patents and are being investigated for possibly abusing their patents in the EU are trying to shift the attention to Nokia and Microsoft.
Back in September, we heard how Nokia was using MOSAID to monetize Nokia’s intellectual property, asserting Nokia’s rights to their patents. Nokia’s IP helped bring in 600M from Apple last year as the Cupertino based giant was forced to pay for using Nokia developed technologies (some of which they tried to bypass by creating that external antenna and causing the antennagate death grip).
It’s worth noting that MOSAID has not sued Google, but Google calls this complaint a pre-emptive strike in case they do. If Nokia were to assert their IP rights, it could force manufacturers to produce WP instead of Android. The whole point of google stuff is to give it away in hope to reclaim money through serving you adverts based on your personal data, gathered best by your usage of their free products. Some from the Apple camp then suggest it is a very clever way to ‘give away’ a stolen product because you’ll recoup money by people using it. Most recently, Tim Cook was reported to have said “The worst thing in the world that can happen to you, is if you’re an engineer and you’ve given your life to something, is to have someone rip it off.”
Google has filed a formal complaint saying that this is Nokia and Microsoft working to raise the cost of phones for consumers. This apparently sidesteps promises the companies have made.
I guess for some, ripping off people is key to their business, such as the cloning of the popular iPhone with SGS and SGSII, riding on the coattails of iOS and propelling Sammy Droids to success. Were people forced to try to recreate their own original responses to everything, well then it might be harder and it might take longer to get anywhere :p. In all seriousness, kudos to Sammy and Google for seeing what’s popular and adapting very quickly to continually realign their products. If only our own Nokia could be as quick and nimble to adapt to continually changing trends. Sniff out what’s popular, what’s in demand and create those products in time as well as creating the more unique products which force other people to adapt and copy you.

You know what else is a collusion…
Hot dogs and ketchup!
Jay, I would say that I enjoy a lot most of your posts.
But some of them, I just don’t understand them. And this one is like that.
Maybe my english …
Listening to Tim Cook’s interview for D10 the other day, made me laugh… he was saying how the owners of essential/standard patents should be more fair, and license their patents in a more.. fair way. Oh ya ? What happened when you used Nokia patents for years, before you lost in court.. and then you had to pay for them. Nokia offered them a payment plan, but they just couldn’t believe that someone else can be better.. ahh the pride.
Then, that made me think… If Apple/Google owned any essential patents, like Microsoft and Nokia do, they would use them to destroy other companies.. just think of what Apple would do to samsung, if they owned all those GSM patents Nokia has… oh man, that would be the end of Sammy as we know it.
So… stop craying, and pay up. You didn’t come up with it.. so.. either make your own, or pay.
+1..
I’m worried about Nokia because of MS. Whenever I think of MS, Sendo comes to mind..
Google wants to become the next Apple, eh?
Well, historically, Microsoft and antitrust go hand in hand…
Believe it or not, a lot has changed over the last 10 years
Nothing has changed.. MS is still the old one.. And now using Nokia’s patents to sue other… Check Barnes & Noble accusing MS & Nokia: http://www.networkworld.com/news/2011/110911-bn-nokia-mosaid-microsoft-252957.html . They only signed a deal with MS due to the pressure from the lawsuits.
No, it hasn’t, except that Microsoft lost ground because they failed to develop a mobile OS that people wanted to buy (we’ll se if that changes with Windows 8).
Wherever Microsoft still have power, however, they do everything they can to kill competition. *Today*, for example, Microsoft are forcing manufacturers to lock by default non-Microsoft OSes out of the PCs they make, and now Linux vendors are considering to pay Microsoft protection money for the privilege of making their own OSes installable on PCs.
Microsoft is THE anti-competitive company. In the markets they menace, the less power they get, the better it is for everyone, especially customers.

This is why i hate google and its android.
Using my prized nokia lumia 610 that i waited for 40 receive. Lol.
Quit crying Google, poor baby. Even a worse problem is all the cannibals we have running around the u.s. as of late. Yikes!
google didnt acquire motorola simply for patents either moto was about ready to sue manufacturers (including android manufacturers) for taking their ip so google had more than one interest in gobbling them up
as for this im surprised by googles move i guess they must be afraid of Nokia & WP now
They are afraid of Nokia, MS & WP but not in the market but in the courtrooms. Check what MS did to B&N.
The EU antitrust action against google and the judge OK’d class action against google by all the book publishers and authors of all the books hoogle scanned as they said we’re google, there are no copyright laws. Suprise google. I’m waiting for the lawsuits for stealing emails that is the same as stealing another companies secrets.
Sorry, don’t understand what Google are complaining about? Are they saying Nokia and Microsoft are abusing their own positions or patents?
I know a lot of this stuff can’t be explained in a few sentences, but can anyone give a basic overview?
Yeah, Jay could write more about the topic and less rant about Android/Google/Samsung.
Please read the sources and see what they’ve written to compare with what I’ve added.
The final paragraph is more of a rant about Nokia’s slow ability to adapt rather than Samsung/Android. Please re-read.
I also just added a bit about Android being free and why from google’s take that’s why it’s attractive because money is made through their services. I then tried to give an opinion of some other camps as to why they don’t feel it’s fair it’s free.
Everything else is from either WSJ/Engadget/Reuters.
Incredibly ignorant and biased take of events by Jay. Takes my breath away.
would you care to elaborate ?
Wow, this is the most biased tripe I’ve ever read.
ever.
Well the way they handle this blog and commenters is no different, why should the article’s tone be so special? 3, 2, 1…
This post is nothing about objective info nor informing about meritum of the case. I am sad because of this, and also because this mean Nokia resources used to create better mobiles and inventions now sems to be involved in Mocrosoft patents crusaide. Microsoft lives from patents and other then computer systems incomes. Perhaps this is the reason of all this situation. Win win strategy. If Windows in Nokia mobils will succes – we will get money from licencing and patents from windows. If Windows in Nokia mobils will fail – this finally cause Nokia bunkrupcy and we will overtake all, so buy it and say we are resqueing Nokia, but in fact we will overtake Nokia’s patents.
For those who would be unaware: Mocrosoft has money from all Androids (or at last from 70-80% of them) for several used patents. In the other words Microsoft colllects money from every handset with Android.
And one more thing: whole part in windows responsible for internet connection/communication was or still is… a linux part. That was noticed with NT years ago. Mircosoft has used linux code there, so if exteranal device asked (mean proper signal codes send to port) in the response it was identyfing itself as a Linux (I don’t remeber exactly which one). That was removed later. But we could suppose that there is Linux in every windows still……..
One can’t use internet without a Linux.
Agree with your first 2 paragraphs. Those are my worries too.. MS is too after Nokia’s patents some of which has been transferred to MOSAID & which MS in turn used to sue B&N.. B&N was then forced to sign a deal with MS.
No idea about Windows using Linux code for internet communication but I do remember reading about MS stealing code & logic from Linux few years back.
You are trying to say that Windows is actually one more Linux distro? Well, if that was true then the flame wars between the Linux and Windows users can finally come to end. When I think of it by that definition the N9 and Lumia 900 both must be Linux phones. How nice!
Misuse of patents are the norm in the US tech industry.
Because it’s impossible not to.
Jay, I don’t believe that Nokia transferred patents to MOSAID to monetize their IP. Its been 8 months since that transfer and we are yet to see something coming out. In the meantime, MS has used some of those patents to sue B&N and forcing them to sign a deal with MS. MS is doing the same things as Google did with Moto but by using another company instead of taking over Nokia.
Also, Google complaint regarding higher cost for customers is truly valid and is very much possible if MS & Apple get their ways. The only reason we’ve very competitive prices right now is because of Google & Android. Both iOS & WP are over-priced for what they offer.
Google’s EU antitrust allegations against Microsoft and Nokia were dismissed by the ITC

Feeling the pressure already, Google?
