Weekend Watch: Nokia 808 PureView hands on and 1080p sample

| June 2, 2012 | 33 Replies

First up, Hans Jochens takes a look at the Nokia 808 PureView.

Towards the middle he compares it with an iPhone, and a Droid handset that looks awfully like the iPhone.

Not in English btw.

Cheers all for the tip!

Secondly, a quick video sample – if you look at the scenery, this appears to be from the recent bloggers Nokia 808 PureView event.

Listen out for the richness of that audio quality and watch out for that quality zoom during video!

Aaah the Zoom !! Too Good.

  2. Chris W says:

Who do you think Apple hate most? Android phones or Nokia phones?

    • KF says:

android. I don’t think they give a shit about nokia anymore

      • N9-Beast says:

I agree android… but not ‘coz of “they give a shit about nokia anymore” its more about all the money apple spends suing sammy and the likes ‘coz of design and copyrights.
        Typical day at Apple
        – Sam: “So, jack you think they have a camera in this place or do the Android makers have some sort of dynamite in their developing offices, we release, they release a week later?
        – Jack: “Naw, I think they just use the copy/paste when we release the pictures at the conference”
        – Sam: “Oh! you think thats why we hate all others too? Like Nokia?”
        – Jack: “Noooo… With Nokia… wait… who’s Nokia again?”

      • DesR85 says:

I think Android ecosystem should be more accurate. If you’re referring to the Android manufacturer that Apple hates, it is Samsung. They couldn’t care less about the others like Motorola or even Sony to name a few.

    • Doffen says:

They pity Nokia which is far worse than to be hated…

    • Chris W says:

yeah, i think you’re correct. But genuinely believe Nokia will get back in the game, perhaps with WP8, and maybe sole OEM of WP9.

    • dss says:

They took care of Nokia in 2009.. and now with Microsoft behind the wheel, Apple are not worried at all. They will always have a solid market share, and profit margins..

  3. lordstar says:

    The zoom.. Amazes me still

  4. alexander65536 says:

The Quality is simply amazing !!!

  5. Ola says:

If you know Swedish language all he is talking about is how fast you can launch the camera and not to big differens in the 3 Os,just that some has moore apps.very poor review.

  6. Mike says:

He said aslo that theres no big differences between the three os(ios, andorind and symbian belle) today, and that the 808 is a very very good phone.

  7. Rat Kutti says:

May this (devices like 808) urge the developers into making some good apps for my beloved Nokia Belle… Things changed… Now they have Qt which is easy to work with… Symbian is far more capable & mature os… Please Mr.Elop… For the love of god, please don’t kill my symbian…. Btw the video is stunning!

    • Lord US says:

The thing about the Qt is that it’s not much easier to write sofware for it if you compare that to the development on the leading platforms.

Despite that it would be nice to see some clever applications utilizing the 808′s PureView effect and the real nice zoom emulation they have.

      • Saul says:

You sound really knowledgeable in all your posts.
If you don’t mind me asking…
What Qt/iOS/Android apps have you developed recently?
And exactly what do you mean by “Qt’s not that much easier”?
        Can you please elaborate? Thank-you.

        • Lord US says:

The Qt gives you a nice D&D way of designing some interfaces and you can do so much with the framework. That all can be done with the competition. Lots of nice functionality from the frameworks. So what’s the great benefit when using the Qt?

If you are targeting for mobile you get far more potential customers if you do the stuff for one of the top ecosystems. You just can’t use Qt on those.

          • RVM says:

Well, my friend tried to develop for WP. He said that it was a nightmare.

            • Lord US says:

That’s very possible. Some people say that having to use C++ is a nightmare no matter what framework is used. Some people dislike the Objective C and some the Dalvik Java.

It would be nice to hear why the Qt is supposed to be so great. Portability is not something that makes it earsier to write the actual code.

          • Saul says:

Hmm, I was hoping that you could speak from a devs point of view.
i.e one or more case studies or test examples that give me an idea of how they compare in practical terms.
i.e. someone that’s actually used many of the components & knows how they compare to iOS equivalents.
I dabble in some iOS/Android dev & due to the recent Qt porting efforts I was interested in some insights.
Not just for Android/iOS but also for S^3, & maybe MeeGo & it’s low-end successor.
Sounds like you don’t have any dev experience with Qt + iOS or Android.
Thanks for trying anyway, I’ll conduct some further research myself.

            Cheers

            • Lord US says:

Yeah, I was asking what’s the great benefit when using the Qt? It’s just not too obvious. No one seems to know what what is.

  8. Srikanth says:

Symbian Belle FP1 is damn good and fast. No delay.

  9. From India With Love says:

@gsmarena..808 pureview is leading in the ‘By Daily Interest’ category…
Its nice to see that people still love Nokia

    • dss says:

.. everyone think its about to come on the market, but we have at least another week until that happens.

  10. dss says:

Stabilization at full zoom is still an issue, just like the N8.. I guess there is no way around it.

Still.. video quality is amazing, and the auto white balance did very well when he turned the phone towards the room. Bravo.

    • RVM says:

Yea, the zoom transitions were improved a lot aswell. Now it’s working like charm. Stabilization at full zoom could still be better though.

  11. Rat Kutti says:

being so used to the symbian platform right from the s40 3110c to C3-01 and the s60 right from N70-1 to 701… I can’t even imaging le me with someother non nokia phone or a non symbian os in my hand! Even though nokia moved onto symbian, i just need it not to kill symbian.. If just they didn’t say that phrase “we’d support symbian untill 2016″ i hope with the birth of belle, symbian would be a great os to have OUTSIDE THE US (i still don’t get it why the guys in the us don’t even accept symbian as a smartphone platform :( )

  12. Rat Kutti says:

*even though nokia moved onto windows phone

  13. munir_joel says:

“Droid handset that looks awfully like the iPhone.”
Haters will always hate. So tell me genius, now we have to invent a circle tv because x company has invented rectangular one? if you do rectangular you are copying? ho, wait, and shoes… Lot of things around the world. The problem of apple is not because Samsung has copied their iPhone/iPad, it’s because Samsung is selling too much. See 9 million SGS3 preorder! Which iPhone they copied now?

    • Jay Montano says:

      Are you 12 years old?

If you bothered to look at the portfolio and designs around the world from all the Android manufacturers, you can see that there are plenty of designs that are a departure from the iPhone.

So the screen is rectangle, it doesn’t mean you are limited to just rectangle with equally rounded corners. The SGSIII that you lovingly point out is a prime example that touch phones don’t have to look like an iPhone. Well, not any more since they’ve rode the coat-tails long enough to have a huge following of their own.

  14. tom2k says:

People are still missing the point when it comes to S^3 Belle. That OS is just as good or better than Android and iOS.

Also, i could care less if Nokia drops support for it in 2015-2016. That doesn’t matter to me.

The only thing that really matters now is that DEVS are no loner writing apps for Symbian. That is the killer.

Symbian is dead because of this point (no new apps/games), nothing else.

    • Lord US says:

Belle is not even close to being as good as the competition if the consumers feel it’s crap. The N97 destroyed Symbian’s reputation.

One reason for the Devs abandoning the Symbian is the Application Store. That store had some reasonable downloads but unfortunately too little revenue compared to the competition. That’s sales and ads combined. Not just the sales. Most of the revenues from the Android comes from ads.
