Rumours of Samsung bid for Nokia – er…Shut up and Keep your money!

| June 8, 2012 | 115 Replies

Another day another rumour. Precisely one year ago, Nokia denied any possibility that Samsung were going to buy Nokia. Yet rumour has sprung up again.  That shouldn’t be that surprising though.

It’s the hot topic of late that Nokia is the buy out target of some other bigger company. MS is a popular contender and many think Facebook might do it. Who can blame them – the situation for Nokia looks quite dire. Nokia know this, but the year has not ended yet, and there’s a better second half of the year to go if we are to believe Nokians.

kauppalehti.fi reckons Samsung is offering 4 Euros per share. That’s shy of just under 15 Billion and would make Samsung even stronger than they are now.

I’d like for once for Nokia to stay its course – no surprise negative strategical changes or a buyout. Just shut up and keep your damn money. I just want Nokia to show us the fruits of this strategy change. What’s the point of a difficult transition if you give up when it hurts and not stick around long enough to see the rewards. Yes, there’s only so much anyone can take but I just have a feeling Nokia’s really close to delivering.

This is the thing that worries me the most is that something will derail Nokia again from ever reaching the final stage of a strategy. I think/hope however that Nokians are confident that they have some great products to deliver in the second half of the year. Look what we’ve just seen happen to S40. Extremely good value for money products, very enticing to the 40 line up. What more for Nokia’s other plans, eh? We’re still yet to see the next billion stuff (the one that has Qt).

The only overtaking of Nokia by Samsung that I can bear for now in the headlines is the loss of the top mobile phone manufacturer crown. As we said before,  Focus now on products, on customer satisfaction, on timely products (and the marketing to give all that ample awareness).

hows keeping the counts now? so far 7 Nokia rumor sales over 6 months ..lol..
Nokia’s totoal assets is at least 40billion.. why will thy sell it for any less?

I guess samsung won’t buy full nokia, they will only buy NSN. So far I know samsung wants to be a big player in network side. NSN can fulfill samsung dream. Now Samsung is the platinum member of linux forum. If sammy could succeed with tizen, network business (buying NSN), there is no player to stop samsung. They have their own SoC, display, RAM.
As a Nokia fan it’s a quite pathetic for me. Nokia is called father of mobile technology, just in 2010/2009 Nokia was the 4th highest contributor in linux forum. Now it seems that Nokia totally lost their track

“Now it seems that Nokia totally lost their track”
you know whom to blame. I am reminded of a quote “tell me your friends and I shall tell who you are”

Everything has an ending and every ending is a new beginning. Maybe the acquisition of Nokia by Samsung would be the best what could happen to Nokia. Samsung is clearly looking for an Android alternative, they now have even become Linux foundation platinum member. Nokia has a long Linux history and a lot of expertise on that matter, which Samsung could use to develop a third Linux based ecosystem.

  4. steelicon says:

Maybe Samsung will revive Symbian and MeeGo, just like what they did Tizen.

    • No reason for Samsung to revive MeeGo, just go with Tizen.

      • jiipee says:

Qt could be a valuable asset for Samsung?
I dont think Sammy would be truly interested. The value of Nokia would me much more for the Chinese players. Unfortunately the value would be the highest for any investment fund. Just imagine:
        - selling NSN to ZTE or other company in network biz
        - Selling Nokia brand, Meltemi and mobile phones to ZTE/HUAWEI
        - selling Lumia line and Navteq to MS
        - licence pureview tech ot sell it to Carl Zeiss, who could offer it to OEMs
        - Have an open auction for patent packages
        - keep the 4 billion (2 in half a year) net cash

  5. I can’t see Microsoft just sitting back while Samsung or anyone else nabs Nokia.

      And, please use English!

      Nokia is still the best!

      • gordonH says:

Nokia’s biggest enemy is within Nokia itself. Second biggest enemy is MS.

        • ashok pai says:

well said. Nokia has been busy scuttling it’s own boat, microsoft is the cunning crook which is appearing to help them, but they are helping them scuttle their own boat, and then microsoft will come to their “rescue” in the final act.

If this happened I would puke uncontrollably.

  8. leon says:

i dont care who bought nokia, but please save symbian :D

    • Per says:

Maybe thats just what Samsung i planing to do. Saving symbian and meego harmattan just that will be named Tizen.
Pureview camera, Tizen OS with swipe, quad core, 720p and QT as development platform

  9. pulkit076 says:

this is the biggest danger for nokia imo. What will happen if they couldnt make it with WP in Q2 and Q3?!?! Only God knows.. I (we) just want to see Nokia rise and regain whatever they have lost. And most importantly, I (we) want to see Nokia as a independent company.

    • Aviez Pinejro says:

It is happening on our eyes. Have any of 4 Windows Lumias conquered any markets? Have they reached sell or popularity comparable to Symbian devices? If yes – there is a success, if no – they can’t make it with Windows. And what is happening?

I’m surprised no one even mentioned Macromedia -> Adobe

  12. Janne says:

While I do have a hard time believing that anti-competitive authorities would ever sanction Samsung buying Nokia, I think the risk of Samsung trying (and thus damaging Nokia’s strategy even further) is real. It might also force others like Microsoft to bid also, just in case. This might be just a rumor, but it might be real too.

And of course overall the risk of acquisition is real because the stock price is SO low. However, someone like Microsoft or Facebook as a buyer would probably have better time getting through regulators because they don’t already have a commanding presence on the mobile market.

For sure there are major risks associated with Nokia’s turn-around and be acquisition risk is one of the biggies.

    • jiipee says:

That is excellent point. Nokia would be more of a burden to Sammy.

Tactically it would be great move: make a bid that you know is not enough. Get the Nokia mgmt to spend time working on the possible acquisition and losing time. Make the Nokia personnel confused, force othets to start bidding as well.

Sorry about that, for some reason I have been trying to post my comment to this thread and it just won’t come through. Will try again. :)

      • Jay Montano says:

Not sure why it’s doing that. Askimet seems to be filtering at a greater rate than usual. It’s most likely got to do with it ‘learning’ what is being marked as spam manually.

The spammers are getting better and using chunks of real text in their message (combined with garbage). If that is marked as spam, future posts with those combination of words seem to be marked as spam too.

Sorry about this. Hopefully marking it back NOT as spam will reverse askimets algorithms or whatever it does to decide what is spam.

  14. Janne says:

It seems unlikely that competition authorities would allow for a company like Samsung to acquire Nokia, because they command so much of the mobile marketplace already. But it doesn’t mean they won’t try and thus damage Nokia’s strategy by uncertainty and also force others like Microsoft to make counter-offers just in case Samsung were to get somewhere with it. The risk is real. And of course someone like Microsoft or Facebook buying Nokia would probably not face the same problems with the regulators (since they command no major mobile presence), so they might easily (although time-consumingly) get away with it.

Nokia’s stock price is SO low. Make no mistake, they are real acquisition target and have been for a while now.

  15. “What’s the point of a difficult transition if you give up when it hurts and not stick around long enough to see the rewards.”

The idiotic WP strategy has NO rewards. And the transition has no point. It’s a suicide transition and there’s absolutely no reason to continue it if Nokia want’s to live. It may be too late already for Nokia, but continuing Elop’s madness leads to a certain death.

Choosing between Nokia continuing with Elop and his suicide strategy and Samsung buying Nokia, I choose Samsung buying Nokia. At least there’s hope of getting something worth while with Samsung at the helm. With Elop there’s no hope at all, it’s all useless WP crap.

    • Doffen says:

My thoughts exactly. Better that Nokia is bought by Samsung than by MS or Facebook. At least Samsung is a good hardware company. Besides, this is a good strategic move for Samsung. The patents and design talent of Nokia would help them immensely against Appel.
