Video: Nokia Asha 311 camera UI and multitouch pinch zoom demo
We’re done with the quick overview videos of S40 Touch. I’ve got, I think, a couple more videos to look at some new things.
In this video we can see the camera UI of the full touch S40 as well as the multitouch pinch and zoom action. It’s smooth enough, no?
Not bad for this price range. The multitouch is enabled in maps as well although to say it stutters is an understatement. I guess I should have tried to see how the multitouch action worked on the resistive 305 too. Yes, in case you missed it, they are all multitouch capable. Being resistive does not mean it cannot be multitouch.
Here’s what the 306 page says:
Resistive Multipoint-Touch

Capacitive Multipoint-Touch
http://www.developer.nokia.com/Devices/Device_specifications/Asha_311/

BTW, I said I didn’t like the design of the 305/306 that much but in this colour I think it sort of works.

Did u just said res screen on 305/306 supports multitouch?
This is just awesome. .
Thnx Jay
It specifically states resistive multitouch on the specs page.
Had u tried it multitouch on 305/6?
I tried and surprisingly it has multi-touch. You can do Pinch to Zoom but sadly at very low speed.
Is there any info who’s tech are they using? If it’s a Stantum resistive touchscreen (the only production-ready multitouch resistive touchscreen I know of), I’d take it rather than capacitive…
it’s a prototype device and looks similar to 305 / 306 me.
Nice to know this has multi touch but that leaves me a bit puzzled… Why would they have multi touch and then releases other S40 phones with resistive touch screens? It is not possible to have multi touch on a resistive touch screen :S
Even though they claim to have a multi touch resistive touch screen I don’t believe it. Prove me wrong Nokia…Prove me wrong.
china tablet have multi touch resistive touch screen. those wm8650 tablets, ziio tablets etc
Of course it’s possible, it just isn’t as cheap as normal resistive screens. Here is a shiny example on how a multitouch resistive touchscreen can work when done properly:
That’s bloody awesome, I want this in top-end phones ASAP!
The only problem with resistive screen technology is its degradation over time – since it uses a flexible top layer as a point of entry, the elasticity of it wears over the time, and it’s far more prone to scratches. Otherwise, again when properly implemented, it is vastly superior to capacitive screens as it can almost do feather-touch, but it can also detect the pressure, can use any type of input not just fingers, has vastly superior precision, costs less, won’t shatter if you bump it the wrong way as it doesn’t require glass…
Still, there are other techniques that can give you both, the precision and features of a resistive screen, and the feather-touch and scratch-proof features of capacitive screens. Sadly, that tech (for example IR transcivers embedded in each pixel on the display) currently costs far more to implement so you won’t see bean counters approving it in the near future…
“The only problem with resistive screen technology is its degradation over time – since it uses a flexible top layer as a point of entry, the elasticity of it wears over the time, and it’s far more prone to scratches”
Yeah good point, still, I’ve looked after my N900 well so it’s never been an issue for me personally.
Then again I haven’t used it heavily in ages now, it may be starting to degrade, haven’t looked.
“as it can almost do feather-touch”
Hopefully latest iterations of the tech are even better in this respect.
I guess there’s limitations as-to-how close it can get to capacitive.
“won’t shatter if you bump it the wrong way as it doesn’t require glass”
In some ways I like having glass, but I guess it doesn’t matter all that much.
“Still, there are other techniques that can give you both”
Yeah sadly one can only dream…
oh well give it time, times always smiles on the tech industry.
Poweruser released data showing large percent of android users are switching to other os’s in the U.S. Seems people are learning. Hope the 311 comes here for pay go phones.
Jay I totally agree with you, the 305/6 the design is awful.
i want the review about accel sensor and UI at all, jay
not bad for $100
The cyan 306 doesn’t look bad. It might have looked better if it was slimmer.
Is it doubleSIM? And doubleSIM standby? Looks meegoish, what is inside?
somebody once said on MNB that add more layer of sth resistive screen will do multitouch too.actually i prefer resistive screen, for example, you can try those gameloft java games like Avengers on your old s60v5,you can just roll you thumb on the d pad and alaways contact the screen just like the way you use a real d pad which is much better than capacitive.i think the design is good and much better than 311
ultimate value for money. I actually look forward to s40 touch more than symbian phones. Funny
I wonder if I’d choose a resistive multitouch screen over a capacitive one? Possibly. It should be much easier to be precise with finger nails/stylus, reduce accidental presses and swipes, and it would reduce finger print smears too.
About the design of these handsets, I think it would look much better if they use single color all over. Two colors isn’t looking neat here.
Cute phone.
I like the design of the 305/306, it just needs to be thinner
from the first it does look stable in use. S40 was also better. not to mention affordable. nokia actually do change. long life (not the promotion)
How these people managed to give gorilla glass and clear screen for $100. so we can expect WM at $120.
i am using iphone 4s and it screen is scratched even display of 701 and 800 are better than iphone under sun .
iphone wins in browser and games.
but ipone multitasking is not real like my old nokia ,in nokia if u send browser to background pages will load in background but iphone will stall every thing.the most disgusting thing in my iphone is you can not copy photos to iphone with itunes also u r forced to sync.nokia does so many things that are impossible to everyone but it will not listen to people for example take wlan connection with out certificate u can not connect to office network so people are forced to use iphone or android.
Jay! Did you ask Nokia if they consider these new Ashas (305/6 & 311) as Smartphones? I mean, they are smartphones in every respect (maybe not 305 that is w/o wifi), especially compared with phones like iPhone 3GS and low range droids? only guestion is multitasking?
My thought is that this is a great way to improve the sales in the statistics, at least… I know is cosmetic, but still it would reperesent the new reality, that within 12-18 months most phones from Nokia will be ‘smartphones’ huh?
Pls i will like to know if the asha 305/6 has Swipe UI as the 311.
All asha touch phones have the same ui. It just varies with 311 being more smooth.
