Weekend Watch: Nokia Asha 311 Nokia browser 2.0, youtube and keyboard.
Here’s a quick look at the browser. We looked at MyNokiaBlog.com which isn’t the quickest to load on desktop or mobile but it works quite well in this browser. (Yes, still finding ways around it). This is not using the WiFi but is on the mobile internet connection.
- Rotating portrait to landscape pretty much instant
- Scrolling looks quite smooth
- YouTube videos play directly to the media player.
- No tabbed browsing apparently (though you could just use Opera for that I guess) I did remember the adverts for the new browser mentioning some multitasking.
- Full landscape QWERTY and apparently QWERTY in portrait or choice of T9.

Yep really impressive, very snappy.
lol the UI is more usable than what we got with S^3 back in 2010.
Lol, nice that somebody else said it first.
It makes you wonder what kind of a mess Symbian is underneath when they probably did this on 1/5th of a timeframe and less of a manpower put to it than Symbian in past 4-5 years.
Bingo.
Please remember that Series 40 is a much simpler operating system without many of Symbian’s features and without multitasking. Of course a simple OS is faster on a 1000 MHz processor than an advanced OS is on a 680 MHz processor.
One question, does the keyboard work in portrait?
Unless I missed it I don’t see the video showing qwerty keyboard in portrait.
Come to think of it, I don’t think I have seen any video or picture showing it.
In first videos you can saw keyboard in portrait mode.

Loek (demoing the 311) was the one who typed it in the browser. I was going to suggest going to MNB but he was already typing it out
What he may not have been aware about is the load times. I get some comments that it takes a while.
the comment system dont work too good with the new layout. for lumia 800 i mean. =x

browser multitasking means it just do downloads in background. It not about tabbed browsing. Anyway opera and UCWEB do all this stuff already.
Quick questions –
1) Does the browser support pinch to zoom?
2) Did you tried youtube streaming on 305 / 306 ?
1.yes,nokia asha 311 support pinch function for zoom.
Will there be opera for asha touch? Haha
UC and opera already works for other full touch java phones like samsung jet etc. I don see why it will not work on asha.
I find the on-screen keyboard is still not on par with WP, seems require precision press to get the right letter. Nokia, please fix the keyboard on N8 please?
Jay! Did you ask Nokia if they consider these new Ashas (305/6 & 311) as Smartphones? I mean, they are smartphones in every respect (maybe not 305 that is w/o wifi), especially compared with phones like iPhone 3GS and low range droids? only guestion is multitasking?
My thought is that this is a great way to improve the sales in the statistics, at least… I know is cosmetic, but still it would reperesent the new reality, that within 12-18 months most phones from Nokia will be ‘smartphones’ huh?
Yeah , these shud be considered as smartphones lite.
But it wud be even better if nokia somehow can add multitasking (even upto atmost 10/15 apps) and inbuilt document viewer/editor. These are the two factors that are holding me back from getting an asha(s40) since they already added 1 ghz processors and enough ram , full touch etc.
Some other important features like inbuilt call blocking , phone tracker etc. Wud be nice though considering samsung have already added these in phones starting from $25/30.
Considering everything, even icon shape seems N9, perhaps a nice surprise is the N9 multitasking upgrade coming. Sure is a great phone even now for the money. I paid $835 for the N9 and here it is at $125. This is the Must Buy phone.
nokia should first work on what he has give ….Actually nokia thinking about poor people country !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Does new Ashas have document viewer?
If not its a major disadvantage IMO.
There is a trick to read doc/Pdf files but its not a time saver.
1. Internet connection
2. Opera Mini Browser on your mobile handset
3. Gmail Accounts
4. PDF or Doc File ( Which you want to read)
How to read :
Open you phone opera mini Browser.Login Gmail accounts.Compose a mail. Attach the file you want to read ( PDF or DOC) send it to your own Gmail address. Open your gmail in Box.You find themail you sent just now.Open this Email.Go to bottom of the mail, you find attached file.Click file at Veiw file html. File will open in the Gmail. You have done.
Please make a useful Doc/PDF reader.
Great vid! Glad to see functionality and refinement trickle down to the lower end of the spectrum. It certainly has me looking forward to the mid range! Kudos to Nokia for making a low end phone that can get people excited. Looking forward to seeing more videos and deciding if this is indeed an n9 lite that I could get as a backup phone to my N9.

Nokia asha 311 has streamed youtube video directly through its inbuild media player.
So you don’t need any flash player or media player.

Are you sure this lets you play youtube videos well? Cause I read one review that said it doesn’t let you play yt videos and now im scared.
