My Dream Nokia #51: The Amazing Nokia Air Tablet, Phone Symbian/MeeGo concept (is this an actual Nokia concept piece?)

| June 24, 2012 | 123 Replies

A while back there was a Nokia promo video showing the seamless integration between a tablet, a phone and a little pocket phone companion (no, not the morph one). I can’t seem to find it in google anymore (it seems to have an issue searching these days)

Anyway, it reminds me of this random video. It may be a fan concept, though it says confidential at the bottom left and provides a link to somewhere in Nokia (which my browser says doesn’t exist).

Anyway, it looks to be some kind of MeeGo device.

The tablet has a kind of weird wedge like that ugly Sony tablet.

The phone adopts the same design. It’s certainly different.

And then they have another phone which folds.

The app arrangement looks like Symbian.

But that’s just the homescreen

Here’s something interesting. Apparently there are ‘no more menus’.

Apps to try. No need to update as the latest version is served directly.

The calendar shows this concept is from 2011.

Look at the caller.

FACE ON, the tablet.

Who ever made this, fantastic job.

It’s certainly not Windows Phone  - or even a hint of being Nokia’s UI on Windows Phone. It’s something entirely different. Kudos on the UI design.

Here’s a video:

About “My Dream Nokia”

I’m sure you’ve dreamt up your PERFECT Nokia device/UI. What it would look like, what it would feel like, what features it would have. Why don’t you share it with the world? Or at least with other Nokia fans :D .

It could be your own photoshopped or rendered work (seriously, you don’t need mega skills in either, basic paint job is often enough to convey a concept) of your dream product.

SEND this in similarly to tips@mynokiablog.com with the title “My Dream Nokia” and perhaps the model number (and a little description, maybe a few specs in the message area? Though this bit not necessary).

Who knows, maybe an image might flutter over to Nokia and through whatever route end up being real

This is look a like symbian^3 successor and meego harmatan successor (future disruption). Well, this is just In Memoriam now. I don’t think meltemi project is born at this concept alive

  2. sina88 says:

Nokia would have so ruled the smartphone market if there would be no Microsoft with all their crap operation systems.

  3. Mac says:

OMG!! This is brilliant. Nokia won’t use it so I hope someone does because this is what all ecosystems would like to work towards. This concept looks great and one that would work efficiently. Nice!! Well done to the designer.

If only Nokia released something like this. They would move to that top spot within a blink of an eye. Just would concern me with a buy in from developing economies with very little internet coverage and were rates are super high.

  4. dss says:

This probably what Harmattan/Symbian^4 would have looked like.. or at least certain parts of them. Very cool indeed.

  5. bimda says:

i think this is a new ui of next maemo version

  6. BellGo says:

Sigh.. I wish Nokia would offer this. I’d get it in a heartbeat instead of those tiles..

  7. Jii says:

D’oh. This all is probably already burned by Mr. Elop. What a pity.

  8. deep space bar says:

sooo guys….. do you believe me that MS was scared of Symbian and Qt why they killed them as well as USA not having control over this OS since it’s not native … :/ hmmmmmmm..now the fact people have seen this and know whey should be expecting from Nokia with symbian ….they WILL DEMAND IT TILL IT’S DONE and as well how MS shot nokia in the foot with it’s stupid update…..shit’s about to get even more real

  9. Dave² says:

GSMArena reports the video being a leak of the Nokia Air cloud service. I guess we Symbian users finally get our Ovi services back?

    • deep space bar says:

      Nokia services

    • Muerte says:

I think that this is unfortunately the opposite – some angry Nokia’s employee (maybe soon an ex-one) is just trying to show to the world, what Nokia had and what Nokia could have been, before becoming a gutless peasant for Microsoft.

This makes me sad, again. If if and if. I can only imagine how Nokia would look like now, if they had given the CEO’s place to Vanjoki, he had the full strategy ready that had NOKIA written all over it.

  10. Beyazid says:

I got really sad when I saw how beatiful and smooth this ui is.
I wish Elop wouldn´t try to kill Symbian but make it the most beatiful piece of software you can imagine.
They had Symbian, they had MeeGo, they had Meltemi. What did they choose? Windows Phone!
They had ideas, potential and money to bring the best OSes.
    I´m really disappointed

    • Muerte says:

BTW, what the hell happened to the whole Smarterphone acquisition? Did Elop axe that as well, just months after the deal? I have seen some really weird things in business-world, but Nokia’s recent (after 2010) actions are beginning to look totally ludicrous.

      • Jay Montano says:

        Watch this space for smarterphone.

        • Rebbe says:

There are again rumors of Microsoft buying RIM … My secret dream: MS buying RIM to Nokia so they could have a os with qt support for future disruptions :D

          • incognito says:

Microsoft would own to Nokia at least that much… But fat chance, Microsoft hates the promise of Qt more than anything, if they were to buy RIM it will be to put the last nail in the Qt on mobile coffin.

    • deep space bar says:

DEMAND DEMAND DEMAND….AND DEMAND TILL WE GET…THIS version is obviously done….we just need the hardware which we can screo anytime but elop is so far up MSs ass that Symbian has no attention and the hact that Accucent is getting fucked by all of this

      • Muerte says:

I think it would be good to arrange some kind of collective “demand-form”, as I don’t think that only sending emails to random Nokia’s employees (or even to Elop) would create anything positive for us customers.

Maybe Jay could build up an address for sign-ups, and after, lets say, one million signatures he delivers it to Nokia :)

The message should clearly state, that customers don’t want to see Nokia losing it’s edge. We want Nokia to be innovative, different, and having the ability to walk it’s own path, just like in this AIR-concept. Satisfy your customers, and you will satisfy your owners. The current strategy is a mess, and having only WP8 and a role as a peasant, Nokia won’t be the king of the hill again.

        • deep space bar says:

FLOOD ELOPs email about Nokia Symbian Air(Donna) i presume since they stated it wont look anything like Symbian Belle/Carla…so seriuously think this was Symbian Donna

      • MoritzJT says:

What makes you think it’s done?! Scan through all the comments for dsmobile s contributions ;-) Then, tears be shed!

  11. Guest says:

News link on the RSS feed is from 2010, so it’s really old concept. I think it’s just some sort of internal concept, they probably never even started working on it. With their MeeGo strategy in 2010, their own cloud system would have made a lot of sense. Now they can’t innovate anything on their own.

  12. Silthice says:

    MeeGo Harmattan PR1.3 update…

  13. Hp says:

Maybe what Ilmatar (Finnish goddes of air, thus the AIR) the next gen maemo/meego device ui could have been.

  14. lordstar says:

Gorgeous looking ui. Very polished… And they replaced this with tiles?! Brilliant Nokia. “Madness? This is Nokia”

  15. SLAYER says:

I have seen these icons, wallpapers and widgets before….

  16. lordstar says:

Nokia scrapped this for windows phone….. REALLY? This video is killing me. I hope those fired developers start a new company and continue with their work. Shame really that they had to cancel their own os and strategy to pave way for microsoft’s ecosystem.

  17. dcastrog says:

says the video is private, cannot watch it. :(

  18. flava says:

The leaked video shows buttonless devices. Seems like MeeGo-Symbian hybrid to me, full swipe experience with beautiful UI and widgets.. Hmmm tasty!

Is this the distruption OS and devices we’re hearing about all this time?
The calendar shown us August 2011 as the date, does that means this video supposed to be released around that time?

Man, once again, i feel pity for Nokia. :(

    • flava says:

Btw, does this mean the “Nokia Air” service will be integrated in future Lumia device?

Damn, this MeeGo-Symbian hybrid UI looks so gorgeous! What a shame!

  19. dss says:

most of the software engineers that were working on this are long gone.. there is no going back for Nokia. I don’t even know what Skillman is still doing there since there is not a single Linux project still alive.. working on S40 ? That is just a waste, unless he agreed to work with Microsoft on WP, but I very much doubt that.

I’ve said it many times before, Symbian is probably the best mobile OS out there, it just needed more time and better management to show what it can do..

My only hope is that Nokia will sell the code base, and someone else would try to get the most out of it.. But I don’t think Microsoft would allow them to do that.

  20. goosepig says:

Elop – You had this in the pipeline and you binned it?!!

    What a tool..

  21. stylinred says:

    The video is private

The images look excellent though its like what you’d hope Symbian would evolve to Symbian Donna? Eva? ;)

I’d like to call Angeline Hattara as well ^^

  22. Harangue says:

Regardless of the software side of these concepts, I don’t see what is so great about them? The renders of the hardware appear really dull, just basic stuff, not really pleasing to the eye other than just being airy.

The tablet design looks very similar to what Sony made with their S1 (or was it S2) design. And also, foldable screens? Even if Apple or Samsung would make them I’d still find the idea ridiculous. From a technological standpoint it is insane, bendable ok, but foldable?

    • Harangue says:

Oh and, it sounds really nice and all. But Nokia being Nokia it would suck eventually anyway. Even without Elop, Nokia always seemed to be halfharted at making stuff. This whole Air concept idea, cloud storage etc., isn’t even done right by the likes of MS and Apple. Companies that have been trying to get consumers to use the cloud, companies that have experience in the business world with the cloud (or MS atleast)

And then there would be Nokia? A company that never really excelled in software design anyway? Concepts are cool and often inspiring, even this Air concept is. But converting it to reality is often hindered by a lot of things and so far Nokia has never proven it could overcome the hurdles when going from concept to reality.

I THINK THIS IS NOKIA’S PLAN.(BEFORE THE MS)
LOOK: THE OS LIKE SYMBIAN+MEEGO UI, THE RECENT FLEXIBLE PROTOYPE SCREEN FROM NOKIA AT YOUTUBE, PLUS THE TABLET HERE.. IT ALL MAKES SENSE FOR ME THIS IS THE ORIGINAL ROADMAP/PLAN OF NOKIA IN THE FUTURE… THEY JUST NEED TIME TO PERFECT THIS.. > THE CLOUD THING? ITS LIKE APPLE WITH THEIR iPADS: NOKIA PHONES AND TABLETS ARE ALIKE; TO BE CONNECTED…
