Ben the PC Guy demoes WP8 start screen for Nokia Lumia 900 (WP7.8)
Ben (the PC Guy) Rudolph demoes the Windows 8 start screen on the Nokia Lumia 900 with WP 7.8.
Resizing is just one touch, with available sizes in large, medium or small.
Ben says the medium square is the size we know and love. I thought it would be slightly larger now that the squares span the entire screen length – though he probably means it’s a similar size and information format.
I’m looking forward to that. Is anyone else still wanting translucent tiles with background or even just a background or is this fine as it is?
There are still apparently MORE consumer features not yet announced. All the demoes so far have been very secretive as not to swipe to the right to see the app list. Many are still asking for one unified notifications centre (just copy Android’s one like iOS).

I want background.
It will be covered by the tiles or the icon background so you cannot see your background.
Small tiles = apps icons + icon square background?
medium/large tiles = widgets?
a semi transparent background will add more appeal to this boring tiled metro ui.
Something is REALLY fishy, not once in any of the WP 8/7.8 announcements and videos has anyone shown us anything other than the Home screen, I at least expected Ben to swipe to the Menu and back, I really think their hiding something big, Just me?
There will probably be something new in the applications screen, but the application screen is still there, I remember reading that from an official MSFT page regarding 7.8 update.
Its not finished enough. Just like the MS tablet
I wonder, will Notification Center be Nokia exclusive. That would be a big thing. F’CK YOU NOKIA WORLD. I WANT U NOW.
The guy showing WP7.8 in one of the demos said he wouldn’t swipe over to the Menu because the Menu on that device was incomplete – it only showed the text for each item, not the icon.
they mentioned that there is a bug in the current build’s software that causes it to crash whenever swiped to the app list.
The concept of Metro is to not distract the user. Having a background coupled with a multitude of those small tiles is distracting.
Well, who does it hurt to make option to choose transparent tiles and some nice background image there? And by default the standard view?
It hurts the user that makes those bad decisions.
I’ve seen N9 hacks where people put background picture on their N9 and the result is that Events view is barely legible. You don’t give guns to people that will shoot themselves in the leg.
It hurts the whole WP platform when other people see those bad decisions and base their opinions about WP on those.
I personally could accept background images, but only if those would be available by official sources, eg. Marketplace, where experienced Metro UI designers could control the quality of those.
These “hacks” that you describe are most certainly not that any more.
They’re properly integrated into the UX/settings, & officially available on the Store.
I think his point was reasonable enough, people should be able to have the choice if they want.
So long as it’s not some dirty hack and is easily disabled it matters little.
I think you’ll be proven wrong too, I think more such flexibility WRT UX config. will arrive eventually.
Then you will argue it’s a good idea, no?
It does not change anything that they are available from the Store. Live wallpapers in MeeGo effectively ruin Events view for me. Not to mention what it does to the battery performance.
Some increased flexibility could be a good thing, the execution just has to be very careful. Transparent tiles with user-defined backgrounds would not fall in that category.
I’m not sure if it is possible to have a background given the tile size and arrangement which fills up the entire screen.
As for the tiles itself, while I like the idea of customising the size of the tiles, some of those tile arrangements shown in the WP8 start screen video didn’t leave a good impression on me at first. Only warmed up when I see better tile arrangement in other screenshots.
Been under a rock for a week or so (and too lazy to go through all the news) – has there been any confirmation about other WP8 features making it to 7.8, Like Nokia Maps, Skype/SkyDrive integration etc?
Skype isn’t going to be integrated in the first place, just as an app so it should be available, Nokia maps I’m not sure but I assume when they drop support of Bing maps they’ll have to do something about the older non lumia devices using them (as well as those using them for the search function). SKydrive wasn’t really brought up i believe.
Skype IS integrated in the phone book/ people hub, just like all VoIP apps can be. It is however installed as an app and can be uninstalled.
I am not a fan of the idea with translucent tiles with background. I really like the new start screen and prefer to add tiles of my friends or picture tiles instead.

The Beta test is over. LOL.
The reason why they don’t show the app list is because they have a bug in the early build (7.8 version).
Source: Greg Sullivan – after 1.12
Many UI elements still not shown.
If it is to be the same as Win8 desktop/tablet then multitasking will be a swipe from the left (similar N9), and charms/options swipe from right.
Close apps, swipe down.
The app list also will also look a bit different (multi rows).
Surprised no blogs have queried these aspects.
Makes sense to keep consistency across phone/table/desktop.
the new homescreen suchs, looks worse than the old one,it lost the style of metro, when the tiles covers the entire screen.should be WP7 style with tile resizing and background changing ability.

soooo why the so much hype on WP7 .8 and 8
