Inappropriate uses of Nokia 808 PureView: #1 Cinema Filming
I got tipped this nearly two weeks ago now but I didn’t want to post it because we’re not condoning this type of activity. @Jenjeman tweeted me a similar video today of someone else giving this a go. I thought it might be worth sharing at least to show the quality of both video and spectacular audio from the Nokia 808 PureView.
Note: Do not try this yourself as it’s most likely illegal to do so.
The 808′s recording quality is phenomenal. But with such great power comes great responsibility. Use your 808 wisely.

Second one:
Cheers Евгений and @jenjeman for the tip!
Note, although this is numbered, this is not intended to be a series so don’t go around looking for inappropriate uses for your 808. It was just there for the title.

I hope that peeping toms don’t use this device for voyouering. Or Nokia added the necessary precautions to prevent misuse.
Nokias brand name is not good already, adding a perverts rep to Nokia is bad.
With great camera, comes great responsibilities.
“I hope that peeping toms don’t use this device for voyouering. Or Nokia added the necessary precautions to prevent misuse.”
If I recall correctly, a similar problem happened in Japan a few years ago and it started with pervs using their phone’s camera to take pictures under women’s skirts (known as ‘upskirting’). It got so bad until Japanese lawmakers passed a law mandating that camera phones have a shutter noise to discourage this behaviour, and it cannot be disabled. As a result, many mobile phone manufacturers designed their phones’ camera in that manner, even today.
My Lumia 800 have the option to disable the camera shutter noise, which I find odd considering the controversy surrounding it, but other previous Nokia phones that I have do not have this option at all.
Actually Nokia, unlike many other manufacturers, is even showing a red light while recording for privacy reasons. At least it was like this with my former X6 and my current N8 (don’t know about 808).
U can turn off shutter Noise on Symbian Nokias easily by turning of “warning sounds” (don’t know how it’s called in english version) in profile configuration. And there are many reasons why to turn it off.
“Actually Nokia, unlike many other manufacturers, is even showing a red light while recording for privacy reasons. At least it was like this with my former X6 and my current N8 (don’t know about 808).”
Hmm. Didn’t know that as I don’t have an N8. My previous phone is the 6700 Slide which I never use for video recording, and even when I did, no light was displayed when doing so unless I turn on the flash option before recording. Might want to try again to see if it is present but currently my mum is using it since she lost her X3 (which I gave to her after I got the 6700 Slide) earlier this month.
The video recording indicator light on the N8 is software dependant. I know it doesn’t come on if you use SymDVR to record, for example.
I recall seeing guides on how to open up and cut off the power to the indicator light on the N95!
The 808 apparently doesn’t have an option to turn off the shutter noise, unlike the N8. Seems a bit pointless either way, since the mechanical shutter of the N8 was not silent anyway, and the led used for focusing for most modes apart from landscape was a bit of a giveaway. I don’t know yet if there’s a video indicator light/focusing light on the 808, as the LED has only been described as useful for recording in low light or for using as a torch.
Still, the consequences and loss of respect that would and should occur for trying to take pervy pictures without permission, or pirated videos really should be enough to put people off attempting it.
A good reason for not having a recording indicator would be for personal safety though, like if you’re worried about being hurt due to the malicious intent of other people. In such a scenario, Instantly uploading videos online would be useful also, in case the phone is stolen or lost.
Bambuser is a good app, but designed for live streaming rather than creating a permanent record of an event, so picture quality suffers.
Thinking about it, could street crime be reduced if criminals start getting captured on video in PureView and Rich Recording clarity, instead of fuzzy CCTV footage?
My 808 does have the option to turn off the shutter sound.
What about just applying the Silent phone profile? Does the simulated shutter sound “kick in” even then? On my N95 (on which, as has already been stated, it’s not possible to mute the sound from inside the camera app), by muting the entire phone, there is no shutter sound either.
808 doesnt have a red light. so taking a video can be sneaky at best. you can turn on the led light manually for night shots. The led light is also used for focus guidance if enabled to focus on night/low light shots. But it beeps when starting and stoping a recording
I cant disable the shutter sound when taking pictures or even changing them.
Silent phone profile (see my prev post)? Doesn’t it work?
Its so pointless to insist on shutter sound for stopping perverts from taking silent pics. Firstly if they want to they could use a tiny camera with so many settings. Secondly the vast majority, probably 99% people do not have any such criminal intend when they want to silence their phone camera. It may not be illegal, but improper to make a noise – example – class notes, a harmless pic of your sleepy friend, etc etc. The point is, if you have bad intentions there are ways. This is a huge inconvenience to the rest of the population
I decided NOT to buy nokia because couple of nokias that i tried did not have this option to turn off camer sound, unlike samsung or apple.
i can mute my iphone, no shutter noise.
Why the hell didn’t nokia, do this as a dual core handset with 1280×720 screen res..
Read the review of the new nexus. High res. Screens are useless outside. Stop wishing for useless.
The higher the res., the higher the glare.
This just shows the POWER of the 808. Join the FORCE.
wrong both of you. screen resolution doesn’t have anyhting to do with glare. as for the dual core, symbian doesn’t need it, and there are no apps either to take advantage of that.
and why do you need a 1280×720 resolution on a symbian. there wouldn’t be any apps made to take advantage of that and would provide a hell of a lot more fragmentation then there already is in the ecosystem
1280×720 is exactly 4x 640×360, so no fragmentation. But it would suck more battery life, require a larger screen, and require even more processing power (which really needs to be dedicated to the camera).
I do not approve of such uses. Also, not impressed with the Spiderman trailer, mushy, bad sound. Second video is great though – as a tech demo.
Well they only recorded the movie trailer so that doesn’t seem like an issue
I have to say I wanted to try this with my N8 when I first got it just to see how well it could record but I never dared to lol leave it to the Russians
Some people are just plain too creative with their minds. Commentators, too.
Guns don’t kill people, people kill people… but the gun helps
Wow, that’s really trollish. So, I make a great product but it will be tamed if some pervs decide to use it.
Like saying “don’t buy Ferrari, only rich snobs do”. Or perverts.
Lighten up people, if a snob kills a mother on the whilst driving a Ferrari, the snob goes to jail not the Ferrari.
