Video: Symbian Belle FP2 leaked on RDA? Looking sweet!

| June 29, 2012 | 82 Replies

Remember those screenshots of Belle FP2?

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/06/07/screenshots-nokia-belle-fp2/

This is supposedly a video leaked on a Remote Device Access. I think Accenture is doing a great job on prettifying up Symbian, cleaning it up here and there and making it more streamlined and consistent.

What do you reckon?

Any idea if it would come for the n8?

    • Janne says:

      Definitely not.

My understanding is that no even Belle FP1 will come to the N8 (and other S^3), although they are slated to get Belle Refresh which you could think of Belle FP1 lite.

      • SLAYER says:

more like FP2 lite. the latest n8 leak has the same browser and music player as FP2, plus the FP2 widgets.

  2. Janne says:

So, what odds do you guys put to us getting:

    a) Belle FP2 for 808 and probably other Belle devices

    b) One more round of (mid-level) Nokia Symbian devices

I’m not a betting man, nor do I have any knowledge of this, but if I were betting I’d put some money on a) and very little to none on b).

    • RVM says:

I’m pretty sure Belle FP2 will come to all Symbian devices with 1GHz+ CPU. Another round of Symbian devices is unlikely though. If they’re not going to increase display resolution or bring Cortex A8/A9 support, they basicly don’t have anything new over what they already have in 603/700/701. On the other hand, Nokia rarely makes sense… so who knows…

      • Janne says:

I find new Symbian’s unlikely too. I guess in theory they might update E6 and E7 (form-factors still stuck in pre-1GHz days) or perhaps release some new design just to keep Symbian a little fresher… But yeah, I don’t see much chance for new Symbians after the 808 and the one Vertu design update, especially now that Nokia is “sharpening their focus”.

I guess the only reason speaking in favor of Symbian release is Q3′s WP7 situation. If they could release and ship something during the summer, before Nokia World and fall releases for WP8, it might make some sense. But I’m guessing 808 will be the great send-off for Symbian in more ways than just mentally…

      • 352x416 says:

I wish Nokia put Cortex in Symbian devices ages ago. I think Flash lite is on Symbian is because full Flash has Cortex requirement.

What happened to the agreement that Nokia signed with ST Ericsson for the U8500?

        • RVM says:

My guess is that it was killed together with WP announcement. Maybe they even planned to launch 808 as dualcore back then, who knows.

Lack of Flash isn’t that impotant… after all it’s going to be unsupported in Android Jellybean and newer. Anyway, newer ARM technology may be essantial for higher display resolutions performance-wise.

And yes, it’s sad. Not only because Symbian, but also because ST-Ericsson, who’s the only european manufacturer of ARM processors afaik. WP8 is going to be Qualcomm only. At least for now.

    • RVM says:

More relevant question is if there will be anything like Belle FP3… Look at N9. Even if it’s based on “dead” OS, they’re getting PR1.3 and i even read something about PR1.4 somewhere…

    • lordstar says:

One more round would be too much if there would be no new hardware for Nokia Belle. I’m curious about the 605, a lot of people were saying that it would have been a symbian device.

Well dsmobile sounds pretty sure that there would be no more symbian devices to come. Even the AAS writers are treating the 808 the last great symbian device.

I guess the only thing that we’ll see in future updates would be bug fixes and performance enhancements updates I guess??

  3. Ammad says:

    “Looking Sweet”

Jay, can you elaborate on that?

I didn’t see anything sweet about it. Looked 90% the same.

  4. Jelly Bean says:

I bet crazy Elop is gonna kill this!

  5. observer says:

    observations:

    * Search is now an essential/integrated part of the system which is a huge plus.
    * Keyboard layout can be changed easily with the “planet” sign in the bottom of the keyboard. (It seems they’ve got rid of the arrow keys which I’ll miss for sure.)
    * Music can now be controlled from the notification bar?

Belle is shaping up to be a modern mobile OS.

    • Ammad says:

music can only be paused, or played. *sigh*
I guess nobody needs to go change a song these days :S

Erm, search ..meh, rather not have it there, never use it anyway.
If i want to, theres a widget for that.

Keyboard, looks like a decent change, but still to see how it is in real life to use.

Please Please PLEASE tell me this isn’t ALL THERE IS TO FP2 ?! D:

      • Ammad says:

AND where’s my god damn usable browser!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????

        ok ok, i’ma chill..
but srsly, i feel like throwing my N8 out the window whenever (rarely) i use the stock browser.

Thank god for Opera, otherwise i really would left Nokia.

Hey, this is still in development right?
Here’s to hoping for more innovative enhancements

        • Marc Aurel says:

Belle Refresh will have browser v8.3 according to leaks, which is actually newer than FP1 (8.2). However, I don’t think you can expect a completely smooth experience with the 680 MHz processor when browsing desktop sites; even Opera Mobile does not provide that (Opera Mini is better, but as a proxy browser it lacks certain functionality of full browsers).

          • Ammad says:

i’m a prospect 808 buyer, so i need to know if the browser is Ever going to work

            • Ammad says:

and if you’ve ever used the browser on a similar spec’d Android device, browser is muuuuuch better

              *sigh*

            • Janne says:

I doubt Nokia will ever fix Symbian’s browser properly, not with the current roadmap anyway. The browser is passable, but yes Android and others are much, much, much better in this regard.

Luckily Opera Mobile exists for Symbian, and is a lot better, so may I suggest that for you on the 808.

            • RVM says:

Well im most interested in how Opera Mobile is doing on 808. It’s not very smooth on my N8, especially the latest version. But it’s certainly one of the best browsers in mobile world.

            • SLAYER says:

I stopped using opera *mobile* since updating to browser v8.3. disabling flash helps alot. (opera doen’t have flash either)

it can’t be worse with double the speed and ram. and you can still use opera.

            • D Harries says:

I can also recommend UC browser if that is available. Perhaps better than Opera……

      • RVM says:

Oh, thx. This is one of the most important advantages of Symbian compared to other OS’s, at least for me. I remeber how frustrated i was while typing something in google search field on Galaxy Tab 10.1. I wanted to correct something, or alter search keywords, and it was real pain doing it without keys.

  6. jvardon says:

I bet the 808 will get FP2 but it’s not that different so now biggie I guess.

  7. vladest says:

I dont see any belle fp2 device on RDA

  8. JGrove says:

The UI’s change in FP2 is a lot better looking than Vanilla Belle, and the camera UI makes changing settings less of a chore, which is always a plus. I hope most most of these changes make it over. Should, it’s all Qt Framework. Accenture is kicking ass.

Also, I would imagine a MHz bump with Refresh, guessing from 680 back to 720 or maybe a bit more.

  9. torcida says:

Hope they will fix the scrolling in some menues…
E.g. go to settings and try to go up an down – nothing happens!
In all (include the shorter ones) should it be like in the longer menues/lists with something like an elastic strap…

    Cheers

    • Beelzebozo says:

Why? There isn’t anything to scroll.

Shouldn’t the home screens also be elastic then?

      • torcida says:

Because you don’t get any response and someone is thinking like whats going on, does the phone legs or is there nothing to scroll… And in the other case you would know, ok, thats the end and nothing is below it.
And addition it looks and feels much better with this feature!! ;)

  10. D Harries says:

It would be good to know if I bought an 808, the updates would keep coming ad infinitum. After all phones are all about software and apps now, right? It also preserves residual values, and keeps the phone relevant as new device for a long time, and have second hand value.

  11. stylinred says:

I Prefer the Album cover to take up the whole screen and also in List mode Id prefer if it was that portrait cover flow/list view that is so hard to get to in the N8 which is a perfect match for the landscape coverflow

  12. Paul Grenfell says:

Just minor changes to FP1 which is already on the 808.. but ant improvements are welcome.Just one thing i would like to see is rearranging keys to allow for bigger touch space.. like ip

  13. lexx015 says:

So, all who commented didn’t say that symbian goes to Qt-based UI.
Media player in my n8 has standart pop-up menus, on belle fp1 in looks like on other Qt written apps.

  14. Ashish says:

Actually belle is copy of Htc Design …..like digital clock.

    • JGrove303 says:

Belle is a Sense knockoff, right? Because HTC invented the flip clock and Belle’s widget “digital clock” includes the “weather, now” widget’s function. How did I not see that! %) (sic.)

      No. Just, no.

    • stylinred says:

so htc went back in time to create the first flip clock eh?

belles clock is similar to htc’ somewhat in that they both look like flip clocks but they dont look like each other

      mechanical clock ftw btw

  15. Dave² says:

Speaking of RDA, any one else see the proto Vertu Constellation on the device list?
Don’t think I recall ever seeing a Vertu on the RDA service.

  16. sillyboy says:

=(. I wished FP2 would look like what we see in nokia air introducing video.

  17. Fritz Pinguin says:

I would prefer a fix to all the bugs which were introduced with Belle. The nastiest one is the stupid security code issue, followed by the missing messages widget, followed by Nokia Maps not talking via Bluetooth anymore, and whatever doesn’t come to my mind right now…

    • Carbontubby says:

I’ll gripe about the single Exchange account support, no CalDav (demoed in Belle and missing in final release), no Webdav (ripped out in Belle)… Instead of spending time prettifying the UI, they should have fixed all these issues first. I use my phone for work so I need all these features whereas a new Qt-fied music player is way down on the list of important things.

Face it: Symbian is dead as a doorknob if Nokia or Accenture’s engineers can’t fix the really important things.

      • manu says:

        its dead already

      • Matti says:

In Finland 25% of Accenture’s Symbian people have already been fired or moved to work on other projects. More moves like that expected in near future. As everyone, but the most rabid fanbois, always expected, the whole Accenture deal was just about killing Symbian slowly and outsourcing some bad PR from Nokia to Accenture.

        • Janne says:

That is probably part of the reason, obviously. They were outsourcing the risk.

However let us not forget they planned to sell 150 million Symbians with a longer tail. With a longer tail things would probably have been rosier had this continued a year or two longer and given Accenture more time to find them other work too. Now things wound to a halt faster than they planned.

But cheap Android crept in too fast and also Nokia handled the transition incompetently and lost part of the game because of that.

      • Hypnopottamus says:

To be honest with you, this very same thing was the reason I left Symbian for Android (I missed Nokia so much I’m now using the Lumia 900). I use my device for work also. Multiple exchange accounts and the ability to have multiple calendar subscriptions (in one account) is totally absent. Because of this, there was no way I could use Symbian as a daily driver. Other than this, Symbian is awesome.

  18. t t says:

It is useless to develope symbian anymore. Now all effort to WP and S40.

  19. gordonH says:

I feel Nokia should go for some more symbian devices with updated processors and better screen. Good symbian devices could seriously bring in some revenues for the hard times.

    • lordstar says:

Even just one mid range symbian phone. hehe

      • RVM says:

And what would this mid range symbian phone bring over what alredy 603/700/701 offers ? They’re not gonna increase screen resolution, not gonna introduce Cortex A8/A9 processors. The only interesting improvement they may add is some AF camera (like the one in N9 for example).

        • lordstar says:

Yep an autofocus camera. Haha sorry I know it’s a hopeless case with Symbian now. Would have been nice for me to see the canned dual core ones for Donna.

        • Donald says:

Well, basically a refresh to the E7 and the X7-00 will be great.
And easy to do, just use the same 4″ screen as 808, same board (1.3 ghz, 512MB ram and increased ROM), with similar form factor to earlier.

p.s. I understand apple didn’t get your memo when they release the 4S…
new devices bring hype, and sales, in an industry where the cult of the new is dominant.

          • Donald says:

And almost forgot – upgrade battery to 808′s 1400 mAh instead of of 1200 of the old models.

Should be pretty easy to do, and maximise the value from a proven (but decaying) platform.

  20. Pulkit076 says:

waahhaa! That Camera UI looks so cooool. And that keyboard?!?! Lovely works going on at Accenture in modernizing Symbian.
Hoping that the 1st gen symbian^3 device users wud also get some FP2 components in Belle Refresh. Atleast N8 is totally worth of a nice looking Camera UI.

  21. JGrove303 says:

I know Belle is a devkon/Qt hybrid and fp2 definitely does look to smash that ratio down to as much Qt as possible. I’ll say it again, it looks great!
Curious though, did I miss something or did Qt 5 get acceptance on Symbian SDK.

  22. 701 FTW! says:

I hate the buttons in music player…
    Other than that… sweet

  23. juwelrana says:

I like my nokia700 very much..because of belle fp1…..i have lot of expectation about fp2.. I wish i get 1080p video playback support…and get more visual support like android or ios..it is very smooth.

  24. JGrove303 says:

It’s just too bad bid developers bailed on the platform. With Qt you can port their apps with a very high percentage of the original code intact. Display resolution is of course the limiting factor, as is system RAM. Great games are the biggest thing Symbian lacks. Unfortunately, todays mobile game require a tremendous amount of RAM and display scaling above nHD.

Exceptions being Cut the Rope and Angry Birds. Notice Angry Birds in Space hasn’t come to us yet?
It blows. We’ll never see a fantastic vertical scrolling shooter/bullet hell/ shmup from Cave. Co. Ltd. like DoDonPachi ever unless some one stops using J2ME garbage and starts coding in C++ and Qt. I wish I could “Grounding Day” a few years and learn C++ and Qt so I could write the damn things instead of bitching about it.

Display resolution shouldn’t have to be locked at nHD, especially considering the Broadcomm GPU in the N8 outputs 1280x720p over HDM.I, but stays at 640×360 on the 3.5mm AV out.
True, nHD eats less energy, but if Infinity Blade II(just for example) needs qHD to run proper, scale the resolution on the display for the apps and scale it back down for the home screens and menus. Don’t used a nHD limited display. Symbian has got to be capable of multisync.

    UGH!!!

  25. xNokian says:

Finally, one-click language change comes to Symbian keyboard. Unfortunately it is a case of too little too late. Some people may be interested in another statistic. Since July 2012 zero Nokia and Accenture developers in US are working on Symbian. Finland, UK and India will provide support till 2016.
