  3. Neil says:

I hope Apple won’t sue Nokia over this. http://swipe.nokia.com/img/home-slider/slide3.jpg

    • kumara says:

      This is already in PR1.2.
Why would they sue them? This is function way before ios. Maybe only visual copy (if it is-I don’t know).

      • Neil says:

Well since N9 is not too mainstream I guess Apple won’t bother anymore. But yeah Apple sues anyone even if it’s only a visual copy. Make a tablet that looks like an iPad? Get sued. lol

    • sgentils says:

If they would want to sue Nokia over this, they would have already done so. This feature is available since PR1.2

    • stylinred says:

its probably a part of apples settling with nokia they didnt just agree to a royalty they gave up some patent/licensing too

  4. DKM says:

Brazil got it first on Navifirm, I am waiting for Austria and Finland version.

  5. Ibrahim says:

waiting for Malaysia! :) see brazil in Navifirm, anyone from brazil can see the differences?

  6. MrZ says:

Insofar as “corporations are people, too”, for Apple to sue Nokia over something like this right now would make them look like complete sociopaths.

  7. wes? says:

Man, how much I would love to buy a N9 with PureView…

  8. Anthony says:

    Great news!

Hope Austria variant is coming soon.

  9. Weirdfisher says:

    Any change logs?

  10. shyne says:

Nokia refused to release N9 in India

i hope atleast they will release the update lol

  11. incognito says:

So, does the update break Inception and other AEGIS-overriding methods?

    • jiipee says:

      No mention of it yet.

I dont see the benefit of it for Nokia anymore since this is probably the last we see of Maemo. Why to bother trying to block hacking?

      • incognito says:

They might have some contractual / warranty obligations to keep the system tight, or they might have fixed some internal bug that may affect the current circumventing methods, or they could just be jerks… A lots of reasons why it might break, even if it wasn’t Nokia’s prime intention…

        • MoritzJT says:

Pretty likely that they’ll close that, just for the first part. Warranty obligations to those who purchase these devices on a more business scale…

        • Ebon & Unicorn N9s says:

Inception and other tools did break when updating from PR1.1 to PR1.2 but the fix for them was available the night PR1.2 got released. I expect the same this time around.

      • MrZ says:

-Fragment the Maemo community (Maemo5/6 divide; this, after Nokia’s promise of a functional (if not user friendly) Meego for the N900 — which, aside of being incompatible with Maemo 6, was also never delivered (what was delivered was an implementation so slow, so theoretical in its ability to do anything at all, that even the most opcode optimization-hardened code warrior could not realistically hope to use it for the achievement of any practical purpose).
-Fragment it some more (n9: VKB, n950: HWKB; top developers get an n950 with hardware keyboard, but only a few of their side projects support that feature because the majority of users (who were never in the position to buy an n950) can never satisfy those requirements).
-Break the smooth UI via an “upgrade” (PR1.1 -> PR1.2) — and, more generally, make it unpredictably sluggish and frustrating to use in those areas where its responsiveness and butter smooth performance had previously earned it many Industry-wide accolades.
-Ensure that rollbacks are not allowed (PR1.(M+1) –X–> PR1.(M) — even though, unlike with e.g. the Playstation 3, there is no existing application/media library of significant value worth guarding), to prevent feature scavenging and the potential of subsequent “accidental greatness”.
-Close the platform, make it frustrating to explore/expand and difficult to develop on/for (Aegis).
-Delay source code/SDK releases; enact byzantine standards regarding the distribution of said tools.
-Fragment the community some more (production kernel, open kernel, patched kernel lead to situations where people might contribute something marginally significant, but are ultimately ignored because the implementation requires one of the kernel releases that many will not want to/be interested in flashing to).
-Enforce the above with no apparent gain (first Inception patch; why, indeed, is it “such a big deal”, when we’re talking about a platform that is not only on its deathbed, but also has no IP/media pool worth protecting? Remember tbat Iron Man 2 rental they had on Ovi for N9? Me neither).
-Provide a “next gen” device that’s nearly a carbon copy of the N9, in the hopes that a number of active N9 owners/community members who see the writing on the wall may be swayed by the familiar design and jump ship.

Aegis is not even merely a good case study for future devices/designs, since those will be developed by MS and adhere to MS’ security principles/practices. It is in fact nothing more than a tactical impediment — a nuisance that exists to “gently” wean off enough movers and shakers (that were previously members of the Maemo community precisely because the platform was particularly amenable to hobbyist interests — and in an area of hardware/firmware development that on other platforms has remained stubbornly closed, restrictive, and secretive) until the remaining ones invariably follow.

        • Janne says:

I’m sure Aegis exists for one reason and one reason only: carriers. See the N900 sold locked by many carriers?

Of course Harmattan never became as big as was intended but I think above is the role Aegis was intended to play – and I guess did/does still play in a lesser extent.

There may be contractual obligations for Nokia to protects the carriers interests in the updates too.

If you think Aegis has anything to do with Microsoft… Oh boy. It predates all that by a huge margin. But then it is conspiracies abound these days at MNB, to heck with reason and common sense…

      @incognito

I dunno know lots about the limitations of WP’s notification framework/system.
Nor do I currently have much time “at all”….
But I’ve seen posts of yours go into quite some detail (just can’t find them!).
Have you got a minute to explain to this guy what some of the issues are?
      http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/29/twitter-for-windows-phone-gets-pushy-adds-notifications-support/#comment-575268885
He seems to think I’m just an anti-WP trollboy making-up stuff etc.
I’d be really grateful if you can oblige! TIA.

  12. tysh says:

I’d love to hear peoples thoughts on the update. It’s reignited my interest in getting an N9, I’m starting to be drawn away from the 808 Pureview.

  13. Ld. Sidious says:

Just became available in Finland… Yay!

  14. xybercy says:

what the hell? this is available but the nokia belle bug fix is long overdue… where is the nokia belle refresh?

  15. Nrde says:

Phone just informed about updates. ( applications and device update). Just made a backup now starting the update…

  16. Luuseri says:

Yeah, available in Finland, downloading it now! :)

    • Andrew says:

Good for your kind of Finland! Why then is mine still found wanting… burning ice in the meanwhile…

  17. lol says:

1000 quality improvements ? I quess the original plan was to release meego in 2013

  18. et3rnal says:

    changes guys?

  19. DKM says:

Just got the update and phone is doing its thing for update. Well will wait for 30 – 40 mins to update as it says and i shall report back.

  20. Ld. Sidious says:

Stuck at 90%. :( Same thing happened, when I updated to 1.2. Oh well, another 30mins and I will reboot.

    • incognito says:

I updated mine, couldn’t wait *whistles*

Everything went fine here, except I got internet/MMS settings from my network again as if I haven’t been using the same SIM with the same IMEI on it, but that was just weird not a real problem.

      Inception doesn’t work :(

      • MoritzJT says:

Just as expected ;-) Well now let’s hope that we’ll get a quick fix for it, remember last time it was nearly provided instantly. I could live with a month or two, as long as we have it back in the end.

Actually one should be able to live with with a delay of a few month.

I have to correct myself, I won’t be able to :D

    • Ld. Sidious says:

I rebooted my phone after being stuck at 90% for enough time. Phone started OK and shows version as 1.3. Inception does not work, but that was to be expected. I’m sure it will be sorted in the near future.

Phone feels very sluggish. Don’t know, if that is the result from being stuck at 90%, so hopefully everything got updated. I might do a complete re-flash, when the firmware image file becomes available in Navifirm.

Luckily FasterN9 still works (0.97). I just uninstalled and then reinstalled it and now the phone is smooth once again.

  21. Ice88 says:

Update available in Finland and also a update for nokia suite. To version 3.5.21.0

  22. Joey V says:

Did not fix the bluetooth problem though :(

  23. repa says:

I got the update today in the UK. Although I have the Central European version 059J1V8.

  24. DKM says:

Update finished and i see is no difference in looks or any added features. The whole OS is much smoother now, Inception wont work after update but all other apps from store and settings remain. Few apps not working so need to reinstall.

Any major changes to the UI or anything, it feels as if the update is for behind the scene fixes.

Over all the OS seems faster and smoother.

  25. Raj says:

    Updating right now…
