NokConv: “What real people do with their phones – research results”

Here’s some more information from the Nielsen research based on 810 completed questionnaires from Nokia Lumia 900 users. Is this a fair representation of ‘all’ users or one that would be interested in something like the Nokia Lumia 900.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/07/10/what-real-people-do-with-their-phones-research-results/

The top 10 activities?

  1. Use camera for still pictures (93%)
  2. Browsing websites (89%)
  3. Use social networks (85%)
  4. Download apps from the Marketplace (83%)
  5. Access email (83%)
  6. Connect to WiFi (83%)
  7. Customise the home screen (81%)
  8. GPS (81%)
  9. Set up an email account (80%)
  10. Download games from Marketplace (78%)

Photos coming out on top is a surprise. PureView needs to appear on Lumia soon so that those photo loving Nokia Lumia users get the best out of their time snapping away with that shutter button.

Another interesting statistic? 96% opted to have data plans vs 84% who chose to have txt messaging. NokConv said:

SMS used to be absolutely universal among mobile phone owners and it’s an interesting sign of the times to see a relatively large number of customers now view it as an unnecessary extra.

Moreover, these users tend to be quite savvy, downloading as much as $15 worth of apps monthly, double the industry average.

The survey was conducted for Nokia by leading market researchers, Nielsen, between April 27, 2012 and on May 18, 2012.

A total of 810 people completed an online questionnaire and all the respondents had bought a Nokia Lumia 900 in the United States within the previous 45 days and was the primary user of the device.

I’m going to buy PureView Lumia! No doubt about it.

    • Mariano says:

      ugh.. lumia

      • Oslik says:

I have two Samsungs with WP 7.5 now. I almost stopped using my compact camera (Samsung, quite solid, no low-end), as a phone is always in my pocket and its camera is almost good enough, but I seriously want higher picture and video quality.

Current Lumias are no better, but at least N8 camera quality on WP would be a decisive moment for me.

  2. arts says:

the thing is, as a former n8 user, i love using the ABSOLUTELY SHITTY camera on my lumia for the simple reason its so EASY and fluid to get back and check on my photos.

a lumia pureview will be absolutely a joy to use. =D

  3. arts says:

    on a different note,

    dafuq?

    Connect to WiFi (83%)
Set up an email account (80%)

    lulz.

    • Jay Montano says:

Yeah I don’t know what that’s about either. It’s Nokia’s own fault for putting it as an answer.

    • StefanP says:

Well, if 80% are busy setting up email accounts, this must be a pretty difficult job on the L900.
Also downloading apps and using WiFi is not the actual usage, but a preparation to do something.
On the other hand, making phone calls is totally missing. This survey is a bit strange.

      • StefanP says:

Furthermore, I’d like to know what unreal people do with their phones… ;)

        • arts says:

Reminds me of the designed for humans nonsense by Samsung.

          • flava says:

Agree, obviously mobile phones are designed for human. My cat can’t use phone, nor my neighbour’s dogs, nor the plants on my yard. Silly Samsung :-|

Yet it’s still selling likes hotcakes despite the silly tagline.

          • DesR85 says:

“Designed for humans, inspired by nature”. Cue the water sound…

Sounds dumb and it is repeated so many times on radio until I can remember a single word of it and sound effect.

Mediocre-looking phone (SGS3) which look like a larger version of the Galaxy Y but with better screen and internals.

      • Jay Montano says:

Yup you’re right, the survey is a bit strange. Perhaps phone call is there but not in top 10.

Well, if 80% are busy setting up email accounts, this must be a pretty difficult job on the L900.

I’ve got to wonder how that could be given that all you need to do is put your email address and password and you’re done. Is there a simpler way to do it?

        • James says:

It also depends on whether they are counted in number of times or in actual time taken to do each task, as well as whether a person have limited or unlimited data plan.

I talk hours on the phone each and everyday either regular or skype calls. If counted by the actual time taken, nothing else comes close.

  4. Chris W says:

One of the best things to happen to me was getting unlimited texts, and i can’t see how people view it as unnecessary.
It’s not like you can text just anyone with things like WhatsApp (can you?).
The one thing all of my friends and family have in common is they (mostly) can receive sms.

  5. Rustyknight17 says:

Hmm , very interesting , photos number one. . And SMS way down the list , though not in my case lol ! Yes , PureView needs to come to more phones !

  6. Rustyknight17 says:

    arts , u used to have a n8 yet you love using the crappy Lumia cams ?!? I certainly don’t lol , but then I have a 710 ( 5 mp ) . And yes , I’m decidedly under whelmed! Cheers !

    • arts says:

i guess we are just shaped by our experiences. *shrugs*

My day to day usage pattern from my n8 camera is to take photos of lecture notes that usually encompasses the entire whiteboard, in rather bad lighting. and if you are a ex n8 user, you will notice that after you take your shot, you cant zoom into the photo that you took, and if you wish to do so, must exit the camera app and enter the gallery app.

Since what im taking is rather minute, any form of shaking usually leaves my lecture notes unreadable and the act of constantly switching between gallery and camera app, is not just frustrating but also time consuming, since the transition between the two takes time, time which i can sometimes ill afford.

in a way i guess im praising the intuitive camera UI design i guess. The quality of the photos is absolute crap thou. I totally agree with that.

      • James says:

Leave the gallery app loaded. Start the camera app, take the photo, hold down the hardkey to bring up task manager and switch to gallery to view, switch back to take another photo via the same way.

        • James says:

Yes, unlike Android, the task manager in Symbian is built-in and doesn’t even need to be loaded to use.

        • arts says:

thanks for the tip, but im afraid my n8 using days are over.

at anyrate, while useful, this method is a rather big roundabout method of getting a simple thing done. one which my lumia handles so much better. (flick, zoom, flick)

also i remembered another reason why i disliked using my n8 for the afromentionee task; time taken to render a zoomed in photo. i think that was really the dealbreaker for me. it took seconds to load. again time, which i dont really have.

          • James says:

To me, the problem is not so much the time taken but the actually rate of magnification. For a 12MP image, I should be allowed to magnify an image to he11…

      • Rustyknight17 says:

That makes sense given ur situation. In that case , I’ probably use the Lumia too !

  7. outdated os says:

    USA survey?

  8. vladest says:

    Download games from Marketplace (78%)
/me lol. marketplace so funny that no need to actually play games…downloading is enough :)

  9. karam says:

what does “real people” mean exactly?

    • Jay Montano says:

Most likely it means ‘bad title’ by NokConv people. They made it even worse by answering this question as ‘normal people’. Sometimes, Nokia just doesn’t get it.

      • incognito says:

Sometimes?! Nokia has far greater problems with the communication than it has with the execution, and they have horrible execution problems. And those mostly shine on NokConv pages. Which is amazing given that 80% of the people writing there come from a professional PR-agency.

  10. YOLO says:

    There are fake people?

    • JGrove303 says:

Ya, they are all over the place here in the Los Angeles area.

Surely the title suggests Average Joes, none enthusiasts. Like, none of us.

  11. Luisito says:

So… I’m anormal???… Who inside Nokia made this mess, someone should shake their PR deparment or the company that handled it….

  12. prashant says:

80%+ setup mail accounts and connect to wifi(resonable) bt mail account i think they are just talking about the nokia store account.

  13. stylinred says:

    My top 5

    1. Pictures
    2. Apps
    3. Texting/Calls/Email (communication category :D )
    4. GPS
    5. Web

  14. ashok pai says:

does the survey mean that Nokia consumers are photo enthusiasts ? (they buy Nokia because of N8/808, or N8 users are the people who answered the polls the most ? ) voting bias can be there too.
