Strange Nokia phone design with unknown segment above the screen

| July 17, 2012 | 83 Replies

This apparently surfaced from some new Nokia design patents.

What could it be? I have no idea. Possibly a d-pad for a return to old N-gage gaming? :p

These designs are apparently new, appearing October 2011.

What do you reckon it might be?

So, top predictions about that strange thing:
    1.A secondary display.
    2.Camera.
    3.A projector.
    And
yeah dsmobile is right this model will get manufactured in India and will be used to take the finger prints of a person or to scan retina(can say it a biometric scanner), it will help people in activating the sim instantly on their own UID’s, UID is actually a new type of ID started in India it contains personal info about the person and it’s finger print and retina’s info about the person. So this phone will take fingerprint or do a retina scan so, a retailer would not require any id proof on paper for issuing a sim to that person only he have to take is scan person bio id and the id verification will be done by phone in the cloud made by gov of India.

that big ass strange rectangular thingi is an ear piece and the speaker…like 2 in 1 to save space…anything else other than that is a big ask from a future S40 device

  3. JGrove303 says:

So, your saying it’s a phone designed specifically for census work?

  4. AlOnE says:

    It’s a solar energy chip,environmental friendly product

  5. Chen Zhe says:

See the Menu/Application key left to the D-pad? It might be a S60v3 smartphone!

  6. JGrove303 says:

I see foot pads on the back side. Suggests this will be used on a flat surface face up so as not to move around when physically interacting with it.
I see a camera on the back like asha’s have. Next to it a loud speaker grill.
The design sketch has a reflective que one the questioned rectangle and the display, suggesting glad or transparent plastic.this belies the finger print scanner, as every unit that does such a thing is textured.
There appears to be a optical track pad button ala blackberry, much cheaper than a touch screen. Beside that is blank space, likely call and end buttons under flexible plastic.
There is no ports exposed, of particular interest, the 2 mm power port a cheap feature phone like this would have.
There is a slat in that rectangle that it’s big enough for an ear piece.

Solar charging S40 phone. I will put money on it.

Good call on the footpads. If this is a census machine for India, it would make sense to have footpads to hold the phone in place on a table while the fingerprint is taken on the large front-sensor.

I also first thought the patterns on the rear might be solar panels. Nokia had some solar panel products in the market ages ago, so it is not impossible. Would a census-taker need solar charging in India? Somehow I’d think carrying a few extra batteries would be more practical. But who knows.

      I think Series 40 is a given.

Elop scanner, if phone detected Elop it will detonate

  8. Grendell says:

Finally! Nokia gets a retina (sized) display! Have no idea but looking forward to whatever it is. Nokia doesn’t usually include crappy hardware features.

  9. Nadeem says:

    its a nokias / secret project @JAY,
    they are testing something,
can give you the phone details, its nokia c3 with a finger scanner on top of it,

  10. AdriiLeamz says:

maybe its a finger pad so if you turn your diagonally you can play games with it. o.O

  11. keke says:

That’s got to be a solar cell or something like that. But why it has to be in front side of the phone. Doesn’t make any sense to me.

  12. Dave² says:

After Nokia’s solar panel project, where they tested prototype devices with solar panels, they found that solar panels are not a viable power source for a smart phone.
Which is why I doubt it is a solar panel.
My bet is on a fingerprint scanner.

  13. muerte says:

My guess: remember Ahtisaari saying, that they want people to lift their heads up and not just stare down to their phones? So it is a hologram UI. :)

  14. JD! says:

It is platform for MS Glassdoor development… you can develop anything on it!

    Now wear your thinking hat.

  15. lmiked says:

My first guess would be finger print scanner so you could log in with your thumb… but the question would be WHY NOW? that’s been around for ages and no one ever used it or missed…
2nd guess is, an 3d interactive hologram projector, that not only projects a 3D model image in front of you, as the sensonrs built-in in it, detect the distance of your and to the device and recognize the position of your hand, thus allowing you to interect with the phone image and UI directly, we’re talking about next gen tech, with some really advance 3D imaging, and 3D imaging editing software, amazing 3D video calls, and obviously some very nasty phone sex video calls :p where you could literally almost squeeze your girlfriend’s Bo**s over the phone :p. Hey hey!!! But that’s just in the future you perverts :p hahaha.
Nah, but now seriously, it could also be a projectos like Prashant said, you no, go BIG, forget big screen, just project you stuff on the wall and you’ll have the biggest smartpphone screen.
I Don’t think it is a solar panel, if it were, it would probably be in the back, cause in the front not only it would take space from the screen and keys overall, but also reflect part of the sun to the person’s eyes, and get Nokia sued for damaging their custumers vision.
    Cheers!!

It looks way too big for a fingerprint scanner, unless it really is meant for some official government-type scenarios. A “normal” end-user fingerprint scanner isn’t much more than a small slit.
