Nokia Lumia 800 picks up Design Award from Good Design Australia

Just saw this tweeted.  The Nokia Lumia 800 wins a Design Award from Good Design Australia.

Nokia Lumia 800 design story. Nic Healey, PC & Tech Authority: “This is a superbly designed phone…”
The Nokia Lumia 800 validates Nokia’s outstanding design credentials.

The sleek, curved casing, together with the inky blackness of the glass and precision finishing is unlike any other smartphone available today.

Its shell is made from a single piece of injection-moulded polycarbonate.

The design process involved post-processing techniques normally reserved for metals which ensured higher precision and smaller tolerances between the display, glass and body.

The use of polycarbonate also provides an important functional benefit – outstanding antennae performance, which means users won’t drop calls.

I always hate reading news where Lumia 800 got The Best Design Award instead of N9 :/

    • Bassman says:

…and what annoys me is when threads, which praise the Lumia design, are hijacked by arseholes like yourself.

Next you’ll be saying that Nokia ‘stole’ the evil space nazi Lumia design from the noble N9….

      • Grazy says:

Thats a little rude!! someone was always going to say it and you know its true!

I guess Nokia were always going to use the same design twice although a little lazy! don’t forget this design is loosely based on the N8 really! and it looks better without the windows buttons! and… it was released first. On top of that seeing as both were released in Australia they really should have given more credit to the N9

I would like the camera button though :(

        • Grazy says:

or at least given a joint award! :)

        • Lee says:

+1, definately harsh as what b4b4.4l1 commented is at least a fair comment.

I agree that it should have been the N9 winning this award, the ugly windows buttons kill the whole significance of the curvey design, which let’s face it was THE perfect match for MeeGo/Swype rather than WP7.

          • Mark says:

Maybe it won the award because it had the N9 body and the capacitive buttons. Did you ever think about that, champ?

            • Shane says:

Oh please, give it a rest already buddy…
Srsly, dont try to string it out along those lines, be honest now, dont let that staunch fanaticism cloud your judgement.
We know the design history, some have tried to retrospectively re-write it, but the history’s out there.
Harmattan’s UX inspired the design/aesthetic, & vice-versa, plus some earlier Symbian designs had some mild influences.
It’s great that it also happens to work well with WP7.5, & it’ll probably be an even more natural fit with WP8x!

      • guerrahp says:

Why are you butthurt? Its true that N9 is the original design. Why do you take it so personally. Get a Life dude.

  2. Mark says:

Why? Can’t you just be happy it got an award?

    Jeez. You people.

  3. Vikas Patidar says:

Nokia fans should welcome this news. Whether it’s N9 or Lumia 800 or Lumia 900.

    • arts says:

Are you sure they are Nokia fans at all?

      • Janne says:

Maybe they are paid by evil Korean PR departments? ;)

Joking aside, I think to good news here is that the Nokia team behind the N9/800/900 industrial design is getting well-deserved recognition.

It doesn’t matter which the device, the superb design – and thus the people who made it happen – deserves all the praise and awards is gets.

      • John says:

        Yup, they most certainly are.

  4. lordstar says:

Well, the polycarbonate unibody design really is gorgeous. I have a feeling Nokia will take full advantage of this design come Nokia World, i hope they do.

  5. Keith too says:

I wouldn’t argue with that award. I was amazed when I picked an 800 up for the first time. The screen is way too small for me but it felt like the best feeling phone I ever held.

    • Jay Montano says:

Agree. The 800 is very nicely balanced. I love the black 800. Every time I come back from the 900, the 800 feels better in the hand. The shape, the matte polycarbonate and I think it looks much better than the white 900 (Sorry Ali!)

@Everyone else. Chill out please. It’s an award for a Nokia. Yes, we know it’s the N9 design. It’s a shame that wasn’t recognised too but in part it is recognised as it’s pretty much identical to the 800.

      • Keith too says:

Ya, hopefully with the next gen they can design a large screen flagship that feels as nice to hold as the 800.

      • Shane says:

There’s some very slight aesthetic/design & bq deficits when one compares the 800 to the N9, I can see them plain as day on mine.
Only very slight, but they are there, mainly due to the fact that the 800 was contracted out, & the N9 -for the most part- was not.
I’m surprised that you (owning both) don’t also concede that…

  6. John says:

It didn’t win best in it’s category (consumer).
There was several other consumer devices that got a design award like it.
And there was many other categories, each with several devices awarded.
It didn’t win design award sustainability, or design award of the year.
Nothing to get too excited about here, unfortunately.
It is odd as others pointed out that the N9 wasn’t in the running at all.
As it was sold quite heavily here & has only become rare fairly recently.
Still, I doubt it would’ve fared too much better.
