Video: Belle vs ICS

| August 3, 2012 | 48 Replies

It would probably be fairer to have FP1 (with 808′s beefier hardware) vs ICS but this is what’s shared right now, Belle on the N8 vs ICS on Xperia Arc S.

I was surprised to see gallery loading faster on the N8 even though the person in the video pressed the Arc first.

I’m amazed that the n8 loaded apps faster, but I think the n8 in this video has not many apps installed, so its not shocking that the n8 would be faster, anyway nice video nonetheless

  2. s2korpio says:

Its fair using the 808? Optimized hardware vs open-custom hardware? I think not.

It is Interesting that now I can say I have experienced ICS (on a tablet I recently bought) and I am not impressed with Android as much as the HYPE said. Just to be clear I wasn’t impressed with Symbian^3 compare to what I have with Symbian UIQ and been repeat it more than many times. But compare to Belle and ICS, I am sure to say Belle or Symbian is better, still better. In functions and in refining. Yes Android has more eye-candy elements here and there.

My fear of typing with a virtual keyboard without cursor keys come to alive, it is just straight BAD and I am mad that Nokia is taking Belle to that path.

Nokia (and I mean Nokia not Elop) put themselves into this awkward and odd position by not taking care of either OSes from the beginning or else they would still be ruling or at least they would be breathing with their respect.

While I am not against WP(8) but… I am lost of words of how Nokia drive their business. And I am mad because I can’t find a decent device that I can actually USE for my own set of requirements and everytime I just had to go back to my aging Sony Ericsson P1i, which is a SYMBIAN phone – a True Symbian Smartphone. Damn compare to todays smartphones that is a true Mini PC.

Back in 2008 when Nokia/Symbian Ltd ditched UIQ in the favor of S60 I am totally mad and lost all my word.Uiq Tech shutdown after that and declared bankrupt. Many of UIQ talented design engineer moved to Google. Every single awesome designs and innovations in UIQ 4 implenting in Android. And today Nokia makes a same mistake by not brave enough to be different from the others. I do not saying that Nokia will not succeed with WP plan but I dont think they can be big enough like Apple is today, and if they stick with MeeGo/Symbian plan they maybe can be success like them.
Today I’m still keeping my SE960i even I’m not using it and waiting what Jolla can bring for us.

      • FireDragon says:

UIQ is far better, far perfect, most feature-rich out-of-the-box, almost perfect for touch UI and still. It was by far a true smartphone OS that let users do ANYTHING right out of the box. Of course 4 years back and if that continues to improve today that would be a slap on every other OS, safe for Maemo/MeeGo and a couple of others. APPS not included, however the apps were good and good enough if someone try to find.

  4. vladest says:

bought week ago asus transformer prime for my wife. with ICS
its too shame to have no true multitask on 4 core cpu and 1 gig of ram…its so annoying

  5. SLAYER says:

It doesn’t need to be fair, the 808 with FP1 wont be slower.

  6. m-cd says:

I need to see the Xperia S vs. 808 PureView (the ICS and Belle are different).
Btw, it looks like the Arc S loads Albums (like the N8 used to) so yeah it lags.

  7. manu says:

belle is a huge leap for symbian but its not good as ics

  8. @blazinemperor says:

A Nokia 701 running Belle Fp1 is quite faster than an 808… And it’s the most stable Symbian device I’ve ever used.. It loads pages faster than an 808, executes commands faster & has zero UI lag.. I’ve been using mine for 4 months now & it has only crashed once … My LG Optimus Black used to crash atleast 3 times a day..

  9. @blazinemperor says:

What’s so good about ICS?? The only reason i’ll pick a high-end Android device is APPs…

    • m-cd says:

True, I have ICS (I’m new, used to be a Symbian fan) and it feels like my old Symbian phones. Not very impressive. I still can’t believe that Nokia abandoned Symbian… Life goes on x)

    • poiman says:

And it’s a good reason. A Smartphone without apps is the same as a PC without Internet.

      • Bloob says:

        A very useful tool?

      • Carol says:

Let me correct you… a smartphone without battery is like a pc without internet. All smartphones have apps, the problem is that people are so indoctrinated with android/ios mass manipulation, they have no clue that symbian has all the important apps, and works perfect with them. Second, most of those people had no idea what a smartphone is until s**ty ios came, and android short after. Man, good was the world when smarphones were used by smart people…

        • FireDragon says:

True that. Since Apple, smartphones are nothing but just bunch of toys. I am against Apple for these two reasons, 1. that they could do really great with the resources and skills they have but they decided to go evil. 2. that giving title to their empty box to idle-heads a smartphone, using candy-coated words to brainwash kids and adults alike. They murdered true smartphones.

And I am mad at companies like Nokia, they could stand up to show what they had (Maemo). They could start getting things from UIQ and improve Symbian for the next 5 10 years. They did nothing.

    • amoshydra says:

I just bought a Galaxy Nexus is jelly bean installed. I must say, in some parts, Symbian is really doing better than android device, e.g. its security (remote locking), ergonomic of the software design, designed to be a phone (calling & messaging) and the hardware combination (camera and connectivity).

However android just offer a lot more features by itself or through apps. Apps is very important to enhance the functionality of the device. For example, tasker (similar but a lot more powerful than Nokia Situation), dropsync, better widgets and educational tools.

  10. Amey Nerkar says:

The ICS UI is ugly, Belle is better

  11. himanshu says:

how it could be live multitasking view on n8 it is feature of fp1.

    • stylinred says:

yeah you could see he has custom firmware installed just by how the homescreen animation when loading apps

    • Carol says:

The animation is a simply mod. Uses the original firmware with no problem. The task can be introduced very easy in the firmware. No costum firmware is more responsive than original. I have the n8 and believe me is full of apps and works just like the one in this video;). And last but not least, this sony is a crape in front of n8…

  12. poiman says:

This is a hacked version of Belle.
Wish my N8 could work like that. Unfortunatly it works worst than cr*ap.
Only good think about it is the camera.

  13. symbian and meego.no wp says:

then nokia n900 will be a desktop computer

  14. Seik says:

This is another video which symbian shows that it is better than android

    • poiman says:

Now, make the same test with Galaxy SIII vs 808 PureView. Also make a benchmark test to the browsers.

      • osg says:

I played with S3 and it’s far from perfect. Friend of mine has configured exchange mail, weather widget and some more stuff on the main desktop. Just this and nothing else makes 360MB free memory. After a while of use, it drops to 220MB and after running some games and apps he showed 80MB (!). He said that he constantly needs to kill all running processes to release free memory.

I also saw how it lags swiping from apps to main desktop once memory is low. Multitasking works here and there but not everywhere. And we could continue. Yeah, it’s a nice phone. HW is excellent, beautiful display, but OS has some glitches that are just not perfect. Same as symbian is not perfect, Android isn’t either.

        • poiman says:

The new Nexus with Jelly Bean solved those lag problems.

          • sks says:

But when will jelly bean reach handsets manufactured by HTC, Samsung etc.., a year from now ?? all this works fine on Belle FP1 now. Symbian has problems Android has problems too… I have an 808 and an N9, but I feel like getting an Android, but the grass is greener on the other side. The first thing that people who own an Android phone say when they see my N9 or 808 is “your system is sooo responsive”
I dont bother to kill apps at all on my 808 I just leave it running, and switch to it when I need it.
I have 3 email accounts configured, 32 GB microSD with tons of videos and images, sometimes I leave chat running with the 3G connection on, it still lasts me a day.
The only thing I like on Android is the browser, for that I have my N9 which is equally good.

            • Doffen says:

Symbians biggest problem is the CPUs and low memory installed in Nokia phones. You simply can not expect a browser to be as fast on an ARM 11 as it is on a 4 core A9 based processor.
The screen resolution on the Symbian phones is in addition a bit like a trow back to 2009.

  15. DJ says:

I have SGS2 and 808. SGS2 is like 10 times faster then 808. Nokia Store is painfully slow, opening any app is so slow. Where SGS2 is fast, easy to use, never had any issues with low memory. On 808 I had quite few out of memory messages.

    • qromodynmc says:

Im using my cheap 603 about 4-5 months,And I never get that memory error,Should I believe to you?..

      • Carol says:

Nope… that’s for shure. 10 times faster my a**ss. when te pigs will fly and the dogs lay egs

        • DJ says:

It is a 10 times faster. I was a Symbian user for long time, and I liked it a lot but after I switched to Android I realized how slow Symbian is: boot time, apps load time, app store search and download. I tried to upload a 15MB picture to a SkyDrive and I got out of memory message. I can just forget uploading a video file.

          • manchester man says:

Ive just uploaded 9 photos on skydrive with my 808 via 3g can it worked perfectly, This was with antsnes still running in the background.

On another note i hope the developer updates antsnes for the 808 as you cant use buttons while using the touch d-pad at the same time.

  16. I hope some day ..someone may just revamp the core of symbian and relaunch it….its sad to see the end of a such function enrich OS…:-(

    • LJ says:

Exactly the same dream that i have. Only problem is, would people buy phones running the newly revamped symbian os, especially when symbian is portrayed now to be slow. Dont get me wrong, i love symbian. Its so function rich, and it suits most of my needs

  17. @blazinemperor says:

ARM 11 CPU isn’t the problem, the browser has some buggy plugins & it’s rendering technology is buggy as well… Nokia should come up with a Brand New browser, and not struggling to fix the old one…. Nokia Browser 8.2 is responsive if you turn off flash & javascript… And itz buttery smooth when browsing through web pages less than 2mb in size.
