Poll: Is Your 808 Dropping WiFi Connection Randomly?

So the 808 is a great Camera-phone; it’s also not too bad of a looker, and UI wise Belle Fp-1 has cleaned it up quite well, but there’s still the occasional issue; I noticed this one within day one of purchasing my 808 (bought it abroad so wasn’t worth going through the hassle of replacing it), the issue I’ve noticed with my 808 is that it’ll randomly drop internet connectivity over WiFi (Note: It doesn’t necessarily disconnect from the WiFi, but the internet via WiFi just dies..). At first I didn’t bother posting about this as it seemed to be an individual issue (not wide-spread); but it turns out there are a couple more like me, so what about you? Have you faced any WiFi issues on your 808?
*Note: it seems as if I get the dropped internet more when using the store & trying to upload to FB than anywhere else, browser doesn’t seem to be as affected.

mine is on 112.020.0311 … never had a problem with the wifi
.0310 here (language variants?)
Definitely doesn’t always connect, or drops the connection.
Which is damnably irritating when uploading a 120meg video, and hoping to do it on the ridiculously fast broadband at home.
There are some definite “issues” on the 808 that weren’t there on the N8.
Smh Ali is trying to shit on Symbian again
And no i dont have any WiFi connection drop
Hello there, I’m Alvin from UnleashthePhones.com, I raised the issue on Twitter earlier and I have no incentive whatsoever to “shit on Symbian”.
Alvin, just ignore those guys that think Symbian is God’s personal gift to the universe and since Symbian was made in His image there couldn’t be anything wrong with it.
Anyway, I have the 808 and haven’t experienced the dropping wifi, but have seen plenty of other bugs…
dont you love them crazies.
This has nothing to do with “shitting on Symbian”. I’ve been very impressed and happy with Belle FP1, but I agree with this article. I’ve this issue with my 808, and my N8 works with the same routers without any issues.
I’ll never understand the likes of you Symbian Zealots who get your panties in a bunch every-time someone points out a legitimate issue in Symbian/Meego/Preferred-OS; yet it’s completely unacceptable for someone to say they like WP/Android/Anything-esle even if they admit to the shortcomings of the OS, instantly being labeled as apologizers or Elop-kissers. Guess what, just like you have your preferences so do others, so next time I suggest you see the rest of the responses (who agree with the presence of this bug) before talking shit.
Thank you.
So now its Symbian zealots vs WP apologizers lmfao
at the end day men and women lie the numbers don’t
You’re an idiot. Did you even read the article? There are several others that have the same problem. Didn’t you see when he said:
“At first I didn’t bother posting about this as it seemed to be an individual issue (not wide-spread); but it turns out there are a couple more like me…”
You’re the one who has made this a Symbian/MeeGo vs. WP issue. At every turn Ali writes something, you show up accusing him of “shitting” on your favorite OS. Admit it, you didn’t even read the article let alone the poll results.
I agree to you partially. The posting is ok and reasonable. There are clearly issues with the wifi. What Ive heard from some people who used to work for Nokia, the power efficiency, which itself is excellent feature, also caused trouble in usability.
On the other hand how Ali handled the issue with polling etc was doomed from the beginning. Had there been a poll whether this kind of approach will cause heated discussion, the result would have been clear
Ali NEVER used the 808. As he mentioned on his 808 review, he did ONE CHARGE since he bought the phone (one month ago). That’s not testing enough. He doesn’t care for the device. Anything he writes about the 808 must be ignored.
The 808 survives for around 5-8 hours in one charge, with screen on and without a SIM card.
Do you think before commenting? Just wondering; say I never used the 808 except twice (hypothetically) the fact that I noticed the WiFI issue (without using the device seriously) makes it that much more of a problem.
And I ahve no idea what your doing with your 808 but it lasts alot more than that, even when filming and taking pictures…
Same issues on 701 with 112.010.xxxx, so it’s a common Belle FP1 bug
Also applies for internet in general. It can happen with WiFi as well as mobile data. Connection framework can recover if it can hand over the connection from wifi to mobile data or vice versa, however it will affect all apps system wide. Definitely FP1 related, not 808
Cheers
i have nokia 603 running nokia belle fp1 and no problems , no wifi issues.
so it has nothing to do with fp1. maybe there r defected devices because many people having 808,s and some 701′s claim don’t have this issues
Three 808s here, no wifi probs with any of them.
It’s not unusual on Symbian.
I haven’t really used Wi-Fi on my 808, so nothing to report. It is mostly a stand-alone camera for me.
Ofcourse since your a Windows Flop apologizer , your trying to shit on symbian also , i wish you WP7 fanboys die ugly like all Microsoft products
Okay, so you are joking – right?
I have no reason to shit on anything over this issue. I have *not* had any Wi-Fi issues with the 808, but I must admit I have used the Wi-Fi feature very little so it isn’t a very useful report by any means.
I’m really ashamed to have to read through such comments.
While I agree on certain points of both sides, attacking positions is fine backed with valid points. However not persons
Agreed.
I do hope that those comments were merely in jest this time, though. It seemed a bit over the top.
Come on. Read you comment, that was clear provocation. “The issues mentioned in this posting is not relevant to me since I dont even consider 808 to be anything else than a camera”
What comes to you latter comment on how bloated the symbian code and your earlier posting. Didnt it cause also quite a lot controversy as well as decent critique. Nokia chose their direction. Had they chosen more pro-symbian approach, I believe that the code would be in good condition (it is not the path I would have chosen). If they have problems with Symbian nowadays in individual features , the symbian core cannot be blamed anymore. Nokia cluster does not have Symbian competence left anymore and cannot fix any real issues, if there are any. All competent resources either left of switched to WP inside Nokia ages ago.
“I dont even consider 808 to be anything else than a camera” is nowhere near to saying what was actually said: “It is mostly a stand-alone camera for me.”
You are reading into it as saying something negative about the 808 as opposed to Janne just saying he primarily uses it as a camera. In any event, does it really warrant the response jeroenhuismast gives?
“i wish you WP7 fanboys die ugly like all Microsoft products”
That is indeed over the top.
Exactly over the top but at the same time explicitly not unwarranted.
Provocation at its finest, through the guise of doublespeak. It’s so Janne.
Hypnopottamus is right. Too much was read into my words. Sure, now reading the message and the reaction again I could have tried to add some disclaimers to it, but a lot of the time reactions to my posts are merely overreactions.
Just stop reading me like Devil reads the bible and you’ll get a far more accurate perception of what I’m actually trying to say. I’m actually quite well-meaning in my ways.
I think I am one of the most pro-808 guys on this site. I sing its praises all the time, from the context I place it in. Yet, apparently I’m a hater. Think about that. I had it with me today all day as my phone, SIM inside. Yet I didn’t use Wi-Fi, so can’t comment on that.
We are talking about a bug that was present already in the N95! How can you explain this with the movement to WP?
jiipee:
Whoah! Steady there.
It was NOT a provocation. It may have been poorly worded, but I didn’t respond in this thread to provoke anyone – just put in my input as a know 808 owner. I hope that much is evident from my later responses in the thread where I’m pondering the energy saving option with others.
I can’t believe this shit. I frigging love the 808. I hope everyone goes and buys one. Yet apparently my way of using and loving the device is not the accepted way…
Yes, same problem with my 808.
Thankfully i own Lumia 800 and N9 so i can switch them together. Those WiFI problems really have irritated hell out of me.
I haven’t noticed any problem. But I have noticed that the Wi-Fi reception is better than in my N9. Some rooms in my house are pretty far from the modem and the N9 always struggles to stay connected. No such problem with the 808.
I was able to improve my N9′s reception with some investigation into my local set-up & twks to my N9, plus I noticed a further improvement with 1.3.
Consequently I find it’s now just as good as my 808PV, which isn’t great compared to some of my handsets, but well within the norm.
WiFi broadcast/sensitivity was dialled down so as to keep radiation levels down, whilst not compromising on cellular reception.
I believe much the same thing was done for the 808PV…
With or without Wifi power saving enabled? My N8 always had such issues while power saving was enabled. No issues after disabling it.
This is an old problem for Symbian… My N95 had it and my N8 has it as well. Some wrote that it depends on the WiFi you are connected to. Some say that turning off the power save mode would help. Some recommend to only use 54MBit. Some… Well, nothing really helped in my case.
Sometimes I’m wondering if people at Nokia (=those responsible for Symbian) were actually using Symbian phones. This bug is so old and evident!
I think you have hit the nail on the head. Symbian development at Nokia, according to many reports, was an unholy mess and one of the results were many bugs that were really hard to find and fix for good.
I distinctly remember writing a burning blog about it in general.
Never had such issues on either the N95 or the N8.
But agree with your last comment. Testing does at times seem to be … minimal.
same here with my 500,c6-01 and 701.
I wrote about this back in june when i got my 808. It doesn’t happen all the time. We have discussed this at nokia support forum as well. It seems that it is router-specific. And I feel as you do, the store is the baddest dropper. But as said, only with some routers. New devices for us affected, maybe? You might want to send the poll results to Nokia after a while, and look for their answer? I would be thankful.
Just to add, I’ve an N8 as well, and with the router that drops my 808, N8 works perfectly.
nope even with my buggy 808 my wifi is completely fine my 3g connection on the other hand isn’t as strong as the competition nor my N8
did you get a new micro sim from you provider ? I had the browser crash on me several times (i am assuming because of the 3g) while I was with my old sim, which I cut.. but a week ago I got a new one from att and so far, no crashes.
yeah i got a new one
i had cut one too and it kept crashing and ended up dying
my carriers service isn’t great either mind you but the N8s radios seem to be more powerful or maybe the housing has something to do with it
Ya, I thought it might be router related, but still.. it should work with all of them. I’ve tested on at least 5 different ones, including a Linksys WRT54GS (great one, never had a problem) and a Netgear wndr3400 … wi-fi stays connected for hours, no issues.
I used to have the same problem with my N8 but I discovered the source of my problem, under Settings>Connectivity>Wi-Fi>Settings there is an option to activate Power Saving, if it is enabled I will often lose WiFi connectivity when trying to download from the Store, also effects the Nokia Reader, disable the power saving and everything works right. Not sure if the 808 has the same option.
Good post, thank you. Just checked, there is the same option in the 808 and it is enabled by default.
Now that people mention this, I also remember the same tip from my N8/E7 days, that disabling Wi-Fi power saving might alleviate/remove problems for some people.
So, definitely, people with the issue try disabling Wi-Fi power saving and report back if it changes anything.
First thing I checked, I never turn on powersaving mode (as the phone is always in offline mode; after all it’s a camera), switching between on and off didn’t help.
So why the fuck u buy a phone only to use as a camera
only by doin that u are shittin on symbian
But you know that power saving and Wlan power saving are two different things and that wlan power saving is on by default? I guess not…
+1
Aaaah! Thank you so much! Haha it’s a revelation. I’ll check if the wifi still disconnects.
I have heard users complain about Wi-Fi dropping on Belle devices, but I have never had the issue on either my E7 or the 808, but if there is a common problem then Nokia certainly need to look at it.
That’s funny cause I have that issue on my E7 AND on my PureView haha. Tho with the last update for the 808 things have been better. My E7 still cant connect to anything tho. Gah.
constantly dropping wifi both N8 as well, as the 808, unfortunately in this regard the difference to any BlackBerry is huge to the negative
to me it seems that the nokia wifi cannot handle some routers and ap’s that use such things as turbo or super-g, which are usually just fancy terms for frame bursting or channel bonding. If you turn these off in your router or ap, problem will likely go away.
I agree. No issues in more than half year after changing my Buffalo’s settings back to normal (no turbo).
my software version is 112.020.0310 i dont have any issues with wifi.
to all those who have a 808 follow me on twitter @sirreflex
All the time on my E7 (Yes I know, it’s not an 808). Often it doesn’t even want to connect to a known network by itself even if it has nr 1 priority and mobile data is off.
Other note: My mother’s 808 “freezes” all the time. It no longer want to open anything, apps are open and the phone works but nothing is actually happening after pressing something or trying to close an app when “frozen”.
My 701 FP1 does this crap all the time. Really annoying.
I have a CFW based on .609 with elements of fp1 cooked in on my N8-00. WiFi does give me shit from time to time, especially using Joiku Spot. Switching to power saving mode and then back, some times Belle elects to stay on EDGE, then I have to manually turn 3.5G back on. Been that way since Anna, so definitely that 30% of the condense that is still Symbian.
And I’m a Symbian Lover.
never happened ever
mine don’t but i haven’t tried uploading anything bigger than 20MB anywhere. though it drops the signal when im not using it (idle) …then connects automatically when i open an app (browser, fmobi…etc)
http://www.wpcentral.com/nokia-lumia-900-still-has-lingering-wifi-issues
not only ali’s fav device but search on net and you will find most of the android and los devices suffering from this.
Ali should try to make a similar post on L900 with polling option. Id love to see the heated discussion again
That is ACTUALLY a brilliant idea! Microsoft Lumia 900 is finally not alone in having WIFI and connectivity woes!
That won’t happen, jiipee. Ali only does that with the devices he doesn’t like.
Look at what he mentioned on the 808 review:
“Battery life!!!! You guys won’t believe this but I’ve only charged the 808 once since I purchased it (over a month ago) true it was in offline mode, but that’s with the WiFi on constantly and alot of picture taking/video recording”
He used the 808 for ONE CHARGE ONLY. ONE CHARGE!!!!! IN ONE MONTH!!!
