Nokia 808 PureView Review by DSLR fan

Here’s another Nokia 808 Review from a more camera centric (DSLR) based site. They do take more of a mobile angle in comparing it with the iPhone 4s.

No surprises what’s going to happen here. ‘Eating iPhone for breakfast’ is probably enough. What is interesting are the comparisons with the Canon 5D Mk3. Unfortunately I’m on a tethered connection which is compressing all the images I see so I can’t appreciate the all the differences. But even so, it’s impressive to hear yet again Nokia’s accomplishments in camera.

Conclusion:

Overall the sensor and lens technology on the 808 is a genuinely groundbreaking achievement for a smartphone. Given enough light, a good subject and a close focus shot – the 808 is capable of pure gold. Although it has a narrower sweet spot than large sensor compacts like the Sony RX100 and far worse image quality in low light, it leaves other smartphones and compacts in the dust when performing at its best.

Thanks Madratz for the tip and reminders!

It’s sad that the only thing going for Nokia nowadays is its PureView technology.

  2. SLAYER says:

lol read what they say about the video… *facepalm*

    • Mapantz says:

I agree about the video bit and i’m an owner of an 808. The video from the 808 is disappointing at times. The rich recording is great, but from a lot of video comparisons, the iPhone 4S does look much clearer.

  3. vikas patidar says:

why everyone does 808 camera comparison with this latest iToy. Please no more embarrassments for Apple and and their imaging technology.

  4. Stoli89 says:

Too bad the reviewer knows little about Belle as an OS. Some differences he failed to mention: FM transmitter. Full HDMI output, RichRecording, DOLBY surround, Full multi-tasking, Full off-line navigation, Pentaband 3.5G, active widgets, slide down menu/notifications, customizable sleeping screen with date/time/message notifications, full file/directory access with real file management capabilities. Hard to imagine why he doesn’t consider this “smart”…unless he wouldn’t know something smart if it hit him in the face.

As for obvious shortcomings, like the browser…simply install OPERA Mobile and be done with it. After that, install GRAVITY as your social client/aggregator and your pretty much set.

    • Weirdfisher says:

Being a 808 user Opera mobile on belle fp1 is still not comparable with jelly bean stock and safari. Laggy when loading and zooming.
      But the camera is unbeatable.

      • Stoli89 says:

I’m not saying it’s a better phone for browsing, just that it is adequate for most browsing uses. As well, I am stating there is more to a smartphone than simply the number of apps or the browser experience. Some attributes the 808 consistently delivers are not available on other platforms (e.g.: RichRecording, FM transmitter, Dolby Surround). If your priorities are games, and/or texting, and/or browsing…there are better options available than the 808. However, if you desire an all around device that packs a superb camera and a convergence of other features for the techie adventurer…the 808 is on a very short list.

You’re absolutely right – I had friends at home yesterday and showed them some pictures and videos from the phone via hdmi. They were blown away by the video and by the audio. I then paired the phone to my Play360 speaker via NFC … showed them nokia maps after they complained about their last vacations where they couldn’t use their androids for navigation without paying roaming fees.. they were sold!

  5. Sonny says:

lol did he say the iphone 4s beats it in video? OMG

    • Pdexter says:

Embarrassing and he doesn’t even mention the sound recording even once….. *shakes head*

      • Stoli89 says:

Yes, his credibility dropped like Newton’s apple on that one. Too bad the light didn’t go off when it hit’em on the head.

        • Sonny says:

I bet when the Iphone 5 comes out these fucking people will find a way to say that it will beat the 808 in the camera department. “facepalm”

  6. ggg says:

any smart developers here in this blog? How come there is not a single stardict dictionary app for pureview? An dictionary that we can add our own words data files?

  7. Cod3rror says:

The most important part of that review is that 808 sucks in low light, which is so very, very important. Any camera can produce nice images in full, bright daylight, it’s when the light goes down that a good camera shows itself.

808 is not good, a daylight camera. A good compact will blow it away as soon as it dims a little.

  8. jake20 says:

that review was really amateur.. reviewer didnt even say what mode the 808 shots were taken in.. 5mp pureview? 8mp? full 38mp?

and no mention of Rich recording?
    awful review..

    • stylinred says:

the stills were all done in full resolution mode, finally got an answer out of him on his forums

he says downsampling in photoshop is better -_- (even dpreview says nope pureview=better)

  9. reflex says:

all those with a 808 follow me on twitter n ill follow specially if uve gt a red 1 like me. @sirreflex. its a great phone i dont understand all the hate no phone s3 iphone wp are perfect

  10. Amey Nerkar says:

Is it that the right end and the left end of the picture in the 16:9 mode looks a bit stretched that the center? Or is that my 808′s fault?

  11. stylinred says:

The low light shots versus the iphone4s were full resolution images from the 808 (this according to the tester in his forums)
