Leaked?: Yellow Nokia Lumia w/ WP8 – Think Lumia 900 with curved screen

WP8-RUMOR1

Thanks to a tip from my friend Norman, WPDang have apparently gotten photos from Weibo (essentially Chinese Twitter) of what looks like a Nokia Lumia 800/900 hybrid. By that, I mean, it has the size of the Lumia 900, but with the curved screen of the 800. What a minute, we have heard this before!

As usual, we need to take this with pinches of salt, but honestly, having the pictures, along with hearing the info from a trusted source a while back, I am excited. One of the things that I’ve found annoying with the Lumia 900 is the bezel. This will change things, not only for me, but a lot of other users.

Here is the best image to wet your appetite. Of course, we only see the homescreen. It may only be running WP 7.8, therefore be a device that will never be released to market. Still, we can dream right?

Cheers Norman for the tip!

  1. ms.nokia says:

    ohhhh so sexy :)

  2. Rupesh says:

It is definately not a WP 8 device, check out the old WP logo, seems to me a proto Lumia 800!

  3. Edmund says:

sexy as always.. the n9/lumia 800/900 form factor.. While i really think this form factor is timeless, hope nokia comes up with another winning form factor soon. :D

    • lordstar says:

They just have to refine the design of that and we have a winner!

      • Edmund says:

i don’t know if it is a good or bad thing but I don’t see how they can further refine what seems already perfect.. They can take that as a complement i guess. but yes if that could be improved on then expect more industrial design awards for nokia… :)

  4. jeffLacs says:

I think that’s a lime green one, just like the Green N8?

  5. Dave² says:

The color looks more lime-ish than yellow to me.

  6. NokiaFan says:

This looks greaaaaaat :-) . Cant wait for Nokia world.in September

  7. can't be helped says:

no pureview and swipe, no purchase,

  8. can't be helped says:

is it all the marko ans peter skillman can contribute to nokia nowadays?

    • jiipee says:

Skillman is UI/UX designer and working for Mobile phones division, hence, his contribution is mostly limited to S40 and apps. Based on his tweet after killing Meltemi, it could be that he’s leaving Nokia.

Ahtisaari isnt competent in design. He’s not specialist in materials, form or UI/UX. N9 design was made before him. He could still be good as director/manager.

      • Grendell says:

        +1
Losing Skillman would be a huge talent hit to Nokia. Awesome hardware though. I can’t wait for Nokia to start putting its stamp on WP8 UI-wise and Pureview.

  9. Bloob says:

I hope there won’t be any more phones of this design. It’s a great design, but 4 phones is enough.

  10. El Marko says:

Without PureView, just about any Nokia WP8 handset is a non-starter. Plain and simple, Nokia cannot compete by simply making evolutionary little changes to the Lumia 900 design. Even if the iPhone 5 sucks, a Lumia which really only differentiates itself from earlier models by sporting WP8 isn’t enough to make a dent in the smartphone market.

    • toermel says:

I don’t see why Nokia could not compete with a evolution of the Lumia 900 (did you see the success of the iPhone when it was first announced?). All it needs are beefy specs and a little bit of luck but certainly no PureView as we know it from the 808. Sure, I would like to have a WP8 PureView phone to replace my N8 at some day but I’m no etalon. Most of the people now want thin phones with big CPUs and large screens. We can think what we want about this and maybe (most probably) people will change their minds as they always do. But for now, Nokia has to deliver such phones as well if they want to return back to competition. Like they almost missed the first Motorola Razr but then managed to overtake the “original”. It was simply fashionable to have a foldable mobile phone in those days… ok, I’m deviating from the subject but do you get my point? They have to have something that competes in the same fields like the iPhone, SGS3 etc. AND they have to have something “new” like a true WP8 PureView.

  11. mushfiq says:

Wait , does it not look like the proto used in the wp8 developer summit.

  12. M says:

Here’s hoping its not a KIRF. Otherwise it complets the YMCBW color cycle.

  13. migo says:

Now, will it stay Super AMOLED Plus but the WVGA, or will it downgrade to Super AMOLED to get HD resolution?

    • Dave says:

      1) Why using Samsung marketing names? RGB is the normal display standard, and pentile is the retarded brother, don’t try to make RGB sound like premium. What’s next, a toyota-plus because it comes with its wheels attached, and a normal toyota suddenly doesn’t anymore? :)

(I don’t buy the burn in argument for RGB amoled, pentile is cheaper, follow the money)

      2) Those are not the only 2 options.

      • migo says:

‘Cause that’s what people understand. Given what Nokia has been choosing lately, those ARE the only 2 options.

  14. ricky says:

awesome… Whatever this is, a NOKIA smartphone leak after quite sometime. Nokia leak more phones, its always good to know that they are baking something… :-D

  15. zlutor says:

the ‘NOKIA’ label is not in the center as usual but in the right corner…

    some operator specific model? Verizon?

  16. Oslik says:

Looks legit, except for the old Windows logo. Perhaps they purportedly used it in prototypes (ot isn’t a production device) to make them less noticeable during testing.

  17. Oslik says:

I personally hope for a 4″ device. It’s the best compromise between 3.7″ and 4.3″ for me.

    • Janne says:

NOKIA logo on the Lumia 900 is 1.2 cm in width and 0.2 cm in height. Lumia 900 screen is 5.6 cm in width and 9.2 cm in height. (4.3″ screen)

On that picture, on my screensize the logo is 1.0 x 0.15 cm and the screen is 4.2 cm x 6.9 cm.

If we use the logo as guide and add 20% to the numbers, we get a screen of 5.04 x 8.28 cm, clearly short of the Lumia 900 size.

Now, on the 808 PureView the logo is the same size as on the Lumia 900. The screen dimensions are not the same as in Windows Phone, but its 4 inch screen measures roughly 4.9 cm x 8.9 cm.

I’d say the odds are pretty good that thing is sporting a screen in the 4 inch region, somewhere.

      • Janne says:

Actually, looking closer the NOKIA logo is more like 0.9 cm in width on my screen, so the corrected numbers for the leaked screen size: 5.6 x 9.2 cm.

So my initial hunch was correct, it looks to be the same size as Lumia 900 – a 4.3″ screen.

    • lordstar says:

yep agree with ya. A 4inch screen would be the best compromise. I find the sgs2 screen quite big actually for one handed use.

      • migo says:

I’m starting to lean away from the one handed use paradigm. Sure it is handy once in a while, but the more I use a smartphone, the more I go towards 2 handed use anyway.

  18. Janne says:

I’m not super-exited about this leaked image, the bottom bezel seems large like on the 800, I think the Lumia 900 is more symmetrical. Also the curved screens have proven in my use quite the pain to keep in shape (I do have a screen protector on the 808 but it doesn’t really fit all that well). It also looks a bit boring from this perspective. Of course it is also just a prototype (if real at all), so much can change. Leaked photos have often looked worse than the end result.

If Nokia indeed releases two WP8 devices, I’m interested to see if some completely different design strikes my fancy this time.

  19. KF says:

why so many wasted space at the bottom??? just like the limia 800, they ruined the design

  20. Open_Source says:

    KIRF (Fake) from Nokla?

  21. Hate to be that guy whose always correcting people’s grammar, but the term is actually WHET your appetite, as opposed to WET, apparently means to sharpen your appetite, think Whet is a stone used to sharpen knives and stuff.
    Anyway, cool looking phone.

  22. Bloob says:

Is it just me or does that look a little less wide than the 900? The screen seems to be a bit bigger too, or there is just less wasted space on top. I’m thinking it has the 900s dimensions but a 4.5″ screen.

  23. viktor von d. says:

looks like a prototype. there’s no ffc on board plus the old windows logo. this could be the device we heard a few months back was being tested in australia. the description fits. and the proportions are ugly. i like the large bottom bezzel on the lumia 800. everything is in reach of the finger. but that works on a smaller phone. this phone looks too big to have big bezzel on the bottom. could it be that it’s the same size as the 900? anyways i am hoping for a little bit of refinement of the line, more sleeker not the same chubby lumias.
would be nice if they put the lumia design in the midrange now and save the coold designs for the high end

    • viktor von d. says:

and what’s that in the first picture? ”SLIDE DOWN TO POWER OFF”. so nokia is finally starting to change things on wp, put in some personal touches?cause untill now i didn’t find exclusive apps are enough for differentiation

  24. Viipottaja says:

It is conceivable this is the “900 follow up”. They may have needed to/wanted to and been able to move the screen upwards a bit to allow for the curved screen and a bit more space of they touchkeys… the bottom buttons/bezel area does look quite big in the pics though. So hopefully not quite the final design, as nice as it already is.

  25. LaW says:

WOW this is definately a new phone coming, a big give away is the camera button at the bottom. Its very low down, much lower than the lumia 900 has it
