Nokia Nostalgia: Nokia 7700 unreleased touch screen smartphone from 2003!
I’ve got a few pics of some Nokia classics to share in the run up to Nokia World. They’re in no particular order.
The first one we’re looking at is a touch screen multimedia phone from Nokia, announced in 2003 but it never made it to market.
This is a Symbian phone, already with a 630×320 screen, but with a very different Series 90 UI.
I’ve never seen one of these in real life before so I’m not sure if the back is normally this thick or if that’s the DVB-H TV extension.
This phone would have been another ‘iconic’ side talking Taco phone like the n-gage and harks back to the days of daring Nokia designs.

In comparison to the Nokia Lumia 900.
Here’s some videos of it in action. Note, this 7700 in photos wasn’t working but it’s quite annoying to see it already looks better than S60V5.

I think they did try to sell some of these. I used to work for Foxconn in finland after military service for about ½ year and I was in a team that made the “shells” for 7710..
nasty but useless
7710 nice phone, but sooo slow
anyway, it has very good and clear display, big functionality and endless battery
Alas!!! the battery life: nokia’S pros
Wow. That takes me back. I believe that was the Hildon effort which was pretty good for it’s time, came out in just a few devices and would have probably change the landscape of the industry if everything had come together for it. Rather like Maemo or Meego. It was said to adapt itself to different skins and was much more touch friendly than the reworked S60.
This is a great example how the competition changed everything back in 2007. The 7700 seems to be completely different design compared to the touchscreen handsets released after 2007.
If you compare the 7700 and Nokia handsets released 2007 and beyond it’s easy to see how Nokia is the copycat. If Nokia was using original designs the 808 would look like the 7700 or N-Gage. Now they are using copycat designs.
It’s actually sad the competition and Nokia’s inferior products truly annihilated Nokia. Nokia was doomed long before Elop was hired. Symbian was losing market share years before Elop and that was because of inferior software and copycat designs.
Unfortunately it seems that the WP was the best possible choice for Nokia. Symbian was considered as a piece of crap by the consumers.
Nokia was a copycat long time before Elop was hired.
This is sad.
This is a great example of how unfocused Nokia was, half-assing many great things.
oh god… u are so lame man, car has 4 wheels and a round steering wheel also has a horn and also has head lights and tail lamps and it got speedometer and it got seats lol, ferrari and every other new model sucks and are copy cats because they copied some of the above things from 19th centuary cars…
And nokia had first camera phone, so app’e, htc, samsung copy cats, all sucks, nokia best and nokia has first multimedia phone and nokia made first 3g call and so on… so every other oem sucks except nokia.. andif everyone thinks like u and this our lifes get sucks, so stop sucking and enjoy the new designs and new ideas and stop sucking about copying.
LOL Nice response
Yeah, Nokia was the copycat.
Nokia never had the first camera phone. You may remember the Kyocera VP-210 Visual Phone released years before Nokia released a camera phone.
yeah ok, but as per u, every other oem copied Kyocera VP-210 that means every oem sucks ah? What i am saying is every thing gets improvised from previous generations and may be some one invent some thing new but when that new is improvised then thats gpod, like nokia 41mp cam, nokia superb designs or sonys external antena, some what good looking desing(lol am nokia fan), and samsung super good all plastic phones(they are getting very good at that).. lol enjoy.
What are you talking about?
Copy is a copy. It’s not necessarily a bad product. It just means the product is not an original design.
Nokia is a copycat what it comes to designing handsets.
This is something new? Every OEM copied each other back in the day. But nowadays they are focusing on suing each other for that.
The biggest copycat of all times is Crapple, my Lord.
i think Nokia had the 1st 1mp camera phone, xenon flash phone, 41mp phone?
Most people born before you were conceived when their dad f***ed their mom and you were also born in the same way I hope. That makes your mom a copycat. I wish she had aborted you as she could not innovate a new way to fertilize her eggs.
oh god this will make him cry haha
LOL
In 93 it wasn’t possible to cram processor and battery to run such thing in the phone design, so it had to reach a bit into a tablet like design. Mobile devices design is more practical, than just style thing.
The phones design can vary only so much, VERY little, and there is not much to accuse some one about copying. Technology allows meaningful shifts in design paradigms. For example flexible materials are probably the next bigger step in design, and its not about who copies who, but who gets there first.
..meant 2003 obviously.
hmm that means every flexible phone here after is a copy of nokia flexi phone from nokia world, lol
They were not able to make rectangle touch screen phone? It seems the 7700 is not a rectangle with rounded edges.
Nokia copied the current design from the competition.
If the rectangle was an obvious design they should have been the first to do that. Nokia was not able to create an original design after the competition destroyed Nokia’s reputation back in the 2007.
Nokia is a copycat what it comes to designing a modern handset.
I read your comment, and commented that. No need to copy it here again.
I copy my comment again:
“In 2003 it wasn’t possible to cram processor and battery to run such thing in the phone design, so it had to reach a bit into a tablet like design. Mobile devices design is more practical, than just style thing.

Yeah, that’s why Nokia copied the design from the competition.
Do you know who was the first? If I remember right, HTC had Iphone form factor firts. There could be also several Japanese phones with ‘touch phone’ design.
Sure, someone was first and that someone was not Nokia.
Everything was changed after 2007 and I’m not claiming that particular manufacturer was the first one with the modern design.
What I’m saying is that everything changed after 2007. That’s when Nokia became the copycat.
Everyone copies someone. Here’s another Finnish touchscreen phone from 2003 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-FlAg3YYXA . User Interface is very close to what we have in “modern” smartphones. Crrent smartphones have much better graphics but the basic UI-paradigm is the same. I know that Nokia had similar concepts but they were never shown in any actual prodcts.
Yeah, everyone copies someone. That’s not the point. The point is that Nokia was no longer an innovator after 2007. They they have been just a copycat ever since.
It’s a huge problem if you are just a copycat.
I fail to understand why so many people are obsessed with that one particular company? Sure, that company shipped a superior product Nokia has failed to surpass. However they were just one company delivering superior products destroying Nokia’s reputation and sales.
Nokia is dying because they have been shipping inferior products for years.
May God have mercy on that company!
Well from what i can see, Apple is copycat since iPhone launch aswell.
oh man, i’ll agree with u every thing is changed from 2007 because of apple, and after 2007, the major breakthrough came to nokia due to flexible screen interactive device and 12mp, 41mp cam.. it definetly had copied some but copying word belongs to samsung but what nokia did is evolution… and i think u have seen the leaked image of nokia wp8 few months back which looks like an alien device and thats called inovation because of that looks if it going to release, and remember what samsung did is called copying and nokia thing is evolution..
ever heard of the Nokia 770 (announced 2005) and the Nokia N800 (announced jan 2007) ?
Nokia was not a copycat.
check your facts.
Copycat is probably a wrong term indeed, but they were a follower/catcher-upper in the current touch-screen, vertical monoblock/slate category.
I still have the 770. Remember a friend saying “Wow” when she saw it. Oh what could have been.
But pointless now to keep reminiscing. Nokia is moving on.
Yeah, Nokia 770 was not a phone. The competition had similar products before the 770.
And the Lord “Goebbels” US has spoken… Keep repeating that mantra, some poor soul might start believing your clueless ramblings.

this is reply for lord us so noworries
Gone with the wind. Now there is Microsoft domination.
My simple question is: why the hell you(Nokia) abandoned a phone like this and struggled with crappy S60V5 phones ??
The calender looks better than my belle fp1 powered 808
Nokias internal politics – they had competing interfaces on top of Symbian – S60, S80 and S90. And not forgetting UIQ used primarily by SE, but also by Motorola and on one Nokia (6708).
That has always been Nokias downfall – internal politics/infighting amongst teams – and not necessarily a case of the better product winning through. And not forgetting parallel developments on later S60 devices – N97 full of bugs, 5230 barely any, despite being on the “same” OS. And the fault appears to be squarely targeted at senior management, who should have done a better job of, er, managing.
From the wikipedia pages, there are claims that elements of S90 made their way into S60. Not sure what though ….
yeah ok, but as per u, every other oem copied Kyocera VP-210 that means every oem sucks ah? Practically Mr.LordUS seems defend Apple Inc(no comma between)…
Nokia biggest mistake was using Symbian 5th ed instead of Series 90 UI or UIQ
This got like zero attention back then. And I don’t really blame them. Who would have bought a touch screen phone when it costs as much as a communicator which is arguably better in all aspects? (7710 vs 9500)
at that time is not best time for nokia to get popular with touchscreens, but apple made correct move at right time so they got hit, at that time nokia doesnt have a proper leader like apple, hope elope changes something in nokia
That is exactly the point, back in those days these devices never made sense or had any real use case. The only real benefit they had were use as calender and basic text editor or something. Browsing etc. and other data usage tasks were useless back then.
Networks and especially contracts weren’t available with data back then and if they were it cost an arm and a leg and another arm and a leg. As soon as data became more ubiquitous and thus cheaper the ‘real’ smartphones started to see a bigger uptake, right at the time Nokia was majorly dropping the ball and the competition was making major steps.
Yep, back in the days there wasn’t much use for super phones if you looked from normal consumer’s perspective. Communicator was a business phone. Nowadays there is internet, games, movies, cameras and all sort of stuff to use. For many people it’s worth it.
I remember when I had my old Nokia 5510 and it had qwerty + 64mb storage for music. And that was extreme for a normal phone.
Now this will be launched with WP8!
Waiting for someone to blame Elop for this…
okay nokia copied but so did apple so did microsoft. The very foundation of apple mac is based on ripping off xerox thats part of the business but before u fools criticise look at what nokia has done without nokia’s technologies nothing yes nothing wud hav been possibl nokia is not big mouth company they keep low profile but if u guys have little sense go out and check how nokia changed the industry defined it created it…
Some guy here said nokia started copying after 2007 , how after 2007 the released devices are n96 n97 n8 e7 n9 lumia 800 701 lumia 900…..which industrail design is copied…. Some fools say apple design apple design yes thats cool nokia’s design is great timeless piece of craftsmanship legendary…
To all nay sayers here who hide behind curtains pretending nokia fans and god damn trolls …. The windows phone 8 lumia devices will be perfect slap on ur dirty faces…..
Have you actually seen the w8 devices?
Isn’t that Hildon!? Not fully Symbian, not fully Linux?
I think it was capable of running Symbian Code but was actually based on Linux and had the most sophisticated UI within Nokia back then…
Am I wrong?
Sorry, it appears as though you’re wrong.
S90 was a different interface (Hildon) on top of the “standard” S60 operating system. Apparently totally incompatible with S60.
A great read maybe: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2011/11/21/nokia_hildon_the_great_lost_platform/print.html
Pay attention to the last few sentences
This means Apple copied Nokias rectangle touch screen.
That’s right, but don’t tell that to lord us or he’ll be upset
Do you sell it?
I want to buy it from you
Hi,
Do you sell nokia 7700 prototype?
I want to buy it
